Noted as one of the most aggres- sive teams in Western Mass., the team finished 1 point out of first place in the Smith Division. The soccer team was spearheaded by a defense which allowed just 10 goals all season, the best in Western Mass. This defense consisted of Steve Sawa (All-Western Mass., All-State), Tom O’Don- nell (All-Western Mass.), Mark Nadeau, Glenn Beauregard and Jerry (Bilbert. Goalie Tom Mur- phy recorded 10 shutouts which was also the best in Western Mass. The offense, which came on strong in the last half of the season, scored 43 goals and was led by Jim Lafleur and Mike Kijak. Coach Davis got the best out of this talented team and led them into the Western Mass, quar- terfinals. Although this team had nine seniors, there were also many talented underclassmen, including juniors Dave Labonte and Will Medina, sophomore Steve Kijak and freshman Dave Gir- ouard. (Tony Lauzon, Lori St. Pierre, Sean Foley) Administration i Congratulations to each member of the class of 1986 on having achieved a significant and important goal — graduation from high school. There is no doubt in my mind that the Chicopee Schools have prepared you well. You now possess the certification which our society has established as necessary to continue your education, seek employment or enter some form of public service. As you approach the post high school phase of your lives, I would urge you to bear in mind always that the real tests are about to begin. You can choose to accept passively the experiences which life will provide for you, or you can choose to master these experiences and use them to achieve your own goals. You can choose to build a life on outmoded and outdated conceptions of the world, or you can choose to realize and act on the fact that for virtually the first time in human history our lives will not be governed by the same assumptions which governed our forefathers’ lives. Whatever you choose, do so wisely and always with a clear perspective of the future, an understanding of yourself and a sense of obligation to those who have placed their faith in you. My very best wishes for continued success and happiness, Guy DiBiasio — Superintendent Herbert Curry - Asst. Superintendent Guy Dibiasio - Superintendent Carolyn Fitzgerald - Administrative Assistant 74 i I I Mitchell Kuzdzal, Principal Julie Leonard. Vice Principal I congratulate each graduate in the Class of 1986 upon the successful completion of his her first giant : milestone toward the future. Undoubtedly, you are 1 eager to pursue your goals with enthusiasm, determination and seriousness of purpose. Graduation is far from being an end; it is just the beginning of all your tomorrows. Over the past several years, you have worked and studied, practiced and played, and grown - grown mentally as well as physically - and now, you are here, ready to begin your lives as members of the adult community. For some of you, this will mean a job and the responsibilities related to self-independence and family living. For others, this will mean college and further years of study and preparation. Whatever course YOUR future takes, it is my sincere hope that you will look back on your years here as having prepared you to meet and deal with the challenges that life will present. I wish each of you the happiness of a producuve iiTe. the respect of your fellow fiuman beings, and the love of your family. May the future be yours. Mitchell Kuzdzal Douglas Gray. You have all been part of a process that has given you a wide variety of knowledge, but you all must remember education does not stop with graduation and is a continuing process. It is important that we meet the technical challenge of the future and keep atuned to all technological changes and expand upon the skills you all have acquired in secondary education. The individual will then, in return, be rewarded with well paying jobs and a bright future. Vocational education is here to stay, and students who take advantage of the vocational programs at Chicopee Comprehensive will find themselves with the very best entry level skills available. -A. Petrucelli The role of vocational education in preparing the nation’s work force is becoming more and more crucial as we move to the year 2000. It will not only have to provide instruction to our students in the core competencies, basic skills, and proper work habits; but also teach them how to learn, maintain positive attitudes, work with all types of people, and how to appreciate the need for life long learning. -Clyde McClelland Drafting is known as the “language of industry’’. It is a “graphic” language of symbols that communicate ideas from the designer to the craftsperson. Most manufactured products and all major buildings were first created on a board by a drafter. The students in the drafting program are learning skills required to succeed in industry. They are using computer assisted drafting equipment to enhance their skills. - L.M. Whether they were part of a bus trip to New York City or at the high school Super Bowl at Benedum Field or in Advanced English class, the seniors whom I have known illustrate the promising potential they have as future leaders and as responsible adults. I have been fortunate to teach some of these seniors. They are cooperative and participate in class, trying — no doubt under difficult circumstances — to excel. While challenges and setbacks are not easy to accept, those obstacles are part of everyone ' s life. If I could leave these students with one thought, I would ask them to remember that the English poet Robert Browning said, “A man’s reach should exceed his grasp ...” Nothing that we truly value in life comes to us easily: we treasure those goals that we work for, not those that are handed to us. We, as thinking, feeling, intelligent men and women need challenges if we are to continue to grow and to lead. Mrs. Judith Chelte English Department At some time during your four years here at Comprehensive High School, I have had the pleasure of teaching or just conferring with many of you. The future will present many obstacles and challenges for you to overcome, and you must meet with them. Your energy, enthusiam, and hard work are certainly good pre-requisites for a successful future. My congratulations and best wishes to the class of ”86”. Dolores Borowiec Art Department Exploratory Exploratory shop is the beginning of voca- tional education. It goes briefly into several different studies, giving the students an idea of what the different shops are like. This experience gives the students the opportu- nity to choose the shop they like the best. Telecommunicorions Telecom classes are located off school grounds at the T.V. Center in Chicopee. In the first year of the course, the students are trained in photography, including the use of a camera and the developing of the film. In the second year, the students are trained in the use of television equipment. The students re- ceive hands on training in television by broad- casting city meetings and local sports events. 92 D.E.C.A. y i Deca is an academic study that informs the students on the distribution and sales of assorted items. The students put these skills to use in running the school store, which sells assorted types of candy and clothing. 93 Electronics Electronics is a shop in which students learn the art of trouble-shooting (pinpointing the malfunction of the object to be re- paired). The students then work on using their trouble-shooting skills by fixing televi- sions, radios, and most other electrical ob- jects. 94 95 Power Srirching i Power Stitching teaches students to make all kinds of different articles, such as clothing, pillows and pocketbooks. The students in this shop have the added extra of being allowed to keep everything they make. Drafting Drafting is a shop in which stu- dents learn to draw up plans for buildings and many other objects. Students also have the opportunity to develop computer skills that will enable them to use computers for drafting. Elecrricol Electrical is a shop that teaches students the uses of non- metallic sheath cable, armored cable, conduit, and wire mold, which are supplies used in different electrical wiring methods. The students put these uses to work in an actual house that is set up in the shop. This house is used to teach the future electricians everything they need to know about the electrical trade. 98 In the auto repair shop, students are taught precise methods of repairing any of the com- ponents of a car. The students are provided with state of the art equipment to diagnose and correct any problems that cross their paths while they are working on the cars in the shop. Auto Repair 100 Auto Body is a shop in which students recondi- tion the exteriors of cars. The students employ many different methods to repair dents or scratches and to remove rust from the bodies of cars. People from outside of the school bring old and new cars to be either restored or repaired by the skilled students in this shop. m Cobiner N In the cabinet shop, students are taught to build many different wooden ar- ticles such as shelves, coat racks, and clock casings. In this shop, students have the right tools to do almost anything this highly demanding trade requires. 104 I Welding is a shop that enables a person to repair, bond, or reinforce metal ob- jects by the use of different kinds of weld- ers and torches. This shop is very helpful to the school in that it repairs broken chairs, tables, shelves, and virtually any other metal objects that are broken or cracked. I -V 105 1 I Machine i In machine shop, students are trained on several machines used to cut solid steel cylinders or blocks to a specific size. This steel is then used for making tools such as scratch awls, plumb bobs, clamps, and many other items. 106 Classes Of 1989 1988 1987 Freshmen Orientation, September 4, 1985 Freshmen Orientation, August 29, 1985 Candy bars — the world’s most nutritious lunch. I would put a Hawaiian shirt into it because it is a fad along with everything else I am writing about. Another fad is docksiders (boat shoes). (Brian O’Conner, Julie Houle) 109 “If I were to build a time capsule, I would include a com- puter to show what made life easier for man and will soon be used by everyone, a car to show how man got around and sneakers to show what man used to protect his feet while walking. I would put in a Time magazine to show everything that happened in 1985. 1 would include a list of sports played around the world to show what sports they don’t play and to see if any new sports were invented. A nuclear bomb is in here because I want to show the world what could destroy countries and scare millions, a picture of New York City to see how it changed from 1985 to 2085, a space shuttle to show how man travelled the universe and found out about space and our planets, a picture of Ronald Reagan to show the President of the ’80’s and the oldest president ever to be in office, a 1985 penny so they could put it in their coin collection, a cigarette to show what killed millions of people, a few different styles of clothes of the ' 80’s to show what we wear now, a Consumer Report magazine to show what cost what in 1985 and to compare prices from their time to ours.” (Jeff Borchers) no [ I I ' m cool. Newspapers would be a good source to put it in. It would show the people what events had taken place. Records and tapes would show how and what we listened to music with. Money would be put in to show our wealth and what we traded with. A photograph would show who ever found the capsule what we looked like in years past, a football to represent one of our favorite sports and activities: a phone would show one of our ways of communication. A walkman could represent the advanced technology. A Cabbage Patch Kid would show what the children of our time had to play with, also a city map so that whoever finds this will know what their city looked like years ago. (Jennifer Landry) re you sure this is where I get off? (Christopher -ariviere) 111 “First of all, I would put in a time capsule beautiful ballads and love songs from the different kinds of music; rock, soul, pop, etc. This is because the music in our society today shows how people feel and think. Also, I’d put a recording of ‘Live Aid’, ‘We Are The World’, and ‘Feed The World’. The reason being is to show that in time of need, people come together from all over the world to help the less fortunate. Also, a picture of the late Samantha Smith would be included, because this shows how the love of children touches the hearts of everyone everywhere to symbolize how people are trying to stop nuclear war or any war from happening and to just live peacefully. In conclusion, I would try to put in this time capsule things that will show the good in all of us, and that in time of need, we always forget our small troubles to help the ones who really are in need.” (Elizabeth Disla) I hope that water’s cold! (Dave Girard) “If I were to build a time capsule. I’d put in a computer with a floppy disc with all the interesting major things and events that happened in the past ten years, also, designs of older and newer cars to show how we progressed. I would also put in the latest games to show what we did for entertainment, and newspaper clippings of major events. I would write a letter saying: “To Whom It May Concern, If the earth has not had a nuclear war, please keep it that way. Don’t start any wars. Try to make peace with other nations because people don’t like to live in fear of nuclear war or be worried about being blown up. The leaders of our nations tried to make peace and called 1986 The Year of Peace. Why don’t you do the same (if you haven’t already)? I would describe life in the present as a time which has many conveniences to make life easier for us. I would also mention that in our present time, there are the problems of a future population explosion, world famine, and the threat of nuclear war. I would also have to say that during this time, we have made, and will continue to make, major scientific advances to insure a better future for ourselves and for our nation.’’ (Susan Roy — 2 academically) I don’t care anymore! With concern to the present world situations, I would give the future people my opinions on them; although, having seen the outcome of the present crises, they would probably be able to give me more advice and useful knowledge about this than I could give them. I don’t think I would change the present time if I could, but I might have used any knowledge I gained for personal advantages. I take this view because I don’t believe anyone has a right to interfere with history, but I also believe that if one knows how certain of his own actions will affect his own life overall, then he will be better able to make decisions. An abundance of something is not a signal for its abuse. They shouldn’t use what we left them as a standard for what they leave the next generation. The idea of each man for himself would have to be put to rest, in an era when greed could end the world, if it already hadn’t. The concept of trust would have to be established in its place. World-wide unity is the key to success. The youth of society should be made to realize that they are the future. My reason for going to this time would be to try to help the survivors of the war prevent the same thing from happening again. My advice to them would be to make more of an effort to get along with the other remaining countries of the world. To get this point across, I would show them first the effort (or lack of it) extended by the leaders of this time, and then the disaster that resulted from it. I would then tell the survivors a few ways that they could improve their relationships with other countries, like by trying to understand the foreign rulers in their native tongue, and by not breaking any contracts or treaties with other countries. These few simple courtesies might help in easing the tension between countries, and would therefore prevent another disaster like a world war.
