We ' ve witnessed the break-up of the largest world-wide communications system, AT T. We ' ve become foster parents to languages such as Basic, Fortran, and Pascal, which the scientific world of computers has adopted. As diplomatic relations with foreign countries are strengthened, the need to communicate in the languages of other lands increases. Language is our key to communication. Words are nothing without meaning. Language is the interpreter of time, progress and technology. 4 In keeping with the theme of Memini ’84, In Our Ov n Words, the book has been dedi- cated to a man who understands the growing need for new kinds of communication and the need for people to communicate in a language other than their own. In addition to being a teacher at Comprehen- sive, he has shown a deep interest in the student body through his active involvement in the Modern Foreign Language Club. He maintains a strong concern tor faculty-student communi- cation by upholding an open-door policy with all of his students. His strong emphasis on foreign languages has helped his students real- ize that there are many other valuable ideas and customs in the world, and that an understand- ing of different languages and cultures is vital to intellectual and social growth. With these thoughts in mind, we very proud- ly present Memini ’8 4 to Mr. Paul A. Le- Beau. WORDS a means to share ideas emotions friendships a means of communication through time 6 We have learned from, and now let go of, their words of wisdom. “Some hang on to ‘used-to-be live their lives looking behind.” 9 morning announcements, graduation speeches. WORDS IN OUR PRESENT We depend so much upon words at this time. Class notes, term papers, WORDS IN OUR FUTURE “All we have is here and now, all our lives out there to find.” “Out there college, careers, taxes, unemployment, prosperity, nuclear weapons peace. How we deal with them is up to us. Each of us has his own doubts and beliefs, hopes and expectations, which are expressed in our words: “What kind of world am I going to find? Will it be real or just all in my mind? What am I Who am I? What will I be? Where am I going and what will I see?” 14 SENIORS « ZOES • SENIO. • SENIORS • i IORS • SENIOa • SENIORS • £ I JOJ?S • SENIOR • SENIORS • Si I IORS • SENIOR | • SENIORS • SE IORS • SENIOR HORS • • SENj TT I I m A • SENIORS • S ' rOJ?S • SENIORS • SEJVI • SENIORS • SENIORS • JOES • SENIORS • SEi • SENIORS • SENIORS • SEI IORS • SENIORS • SENIORS • SENIORS • SENIORS • SE JOES • SENIORS • SENIORS • SENIORS • SENIORS • SEi IORS • SENIORS • SENIORS • SENIORS • SENIORS • SEI IORS • SENIORS • SENIORS SENIORS • SENI( • g M I. «1 JOES • SENIORS • S. • SENIORS • SENIOI IORS • SENIORS • | • SENIORS • SENIOI IORS • SENIORS • S • SENIORS • SENIOI IORS • SENIORS • TOES • SENIORS • S • SENIORS • SENIOI IORS • SENIORS • £ • SENIORS • SENIOI IORS • SENIORS • S • SENIORS • SENIO. Remember the years we spent in high school? Remember the changes happening around us? The whole world was transformed before our very eyes. Remember all the trends that we helped popularize? We dressed up in hot-pink mini skirts and Nike sneakers. We were surrounded by Garfield and Smurf paraphernalia. We couldn ' t turn around without taking the Pepsi Challenge, or comparing the Whopper and the Big Mac. If we needed to know what time it was, all we had to do was look at our new pens. And the huge ghetto-blasting radios we used to carry around were replaced by the more convenient Walkman. We had some awesome fads, fer sure! Remember how we managed to keep ourselves entertained? We went to the movies at the Holyoke Mall and saw the long awaited Return of the Jedi , we watched Richard Gere become an idol in An Officer and a Gentleman , and we glimpsed a look into the future of computers in War Games. On television, we tuned into programs such as Magnum P.I. , General Hospital , Cheers , and the dueling prime-time soap operas Dynasty , and Dallas! We even said goodbye to the long-running CBS comedy M.A.S.H. Musicwise, we were told to Get Physical with Olivia Newton John, to Beat It with Michael Jackson. We listened to Every Breath You Take with the Police; we heard Rock the Casbah with the Clash, and Tell Her About It by Billy Joel. We also witnesed the Who ' s final tour. During high school, to quote Def Leppard, we weren ' t foolin ' around. Remember all the abbreviations we dealt with? E.T. was a three-foot tall, Reese ' s-pieces-munching, extra-terrestrial subject of a blockbuster movie. Mr. T. was a rough and tough hero from the hit series A-Team. MX was a controversial missle. SAT ' s were dreaded tests that we got to color in. MTV was revolutionary music television station that showed us the latest songs. Remember the politics that we first were aware of? Hazardous waste management became an issue due to the Environmental Protection Agency scandal. We felt the relief of inflation ' s going down, although our wages were cut to increase the job market. We were relieved when martial law was finally repealed in Poland. We watched with fascination as the future King of England, Prince Charles, married a fairy-tale princess, Lady Di, and started a family. The battles in Lebanon ceased, but at the same time we were horrified to learn that Soviet planes had shot down a Korean jet-liner, killing 269 innocent people. Remember Senior Year? Senior hat day; finally sitting in the senior section at the rallies; kicking the underclassmen off the senior lunch table; painting the tank on homecoming weekend. Remember the multitude of different feelings that we were bombarded with? We felt excitement in leaving Comp, but fear in entering the real world . We were saddened to think of all the special friends and memories that we were about to leave behind as we started out on our own ways through life. Senior year will aways be remembered for its good friends and good times! • UNDER UNDERC TTisrnrt !: r • UNDER t . -A ■ ' UNDERCLASS. Although I know only a few of you personally, I feel that this relationship has been established because you entered high school the same year I became superintendent. We have shared the problems associated with revised curriculum, new gradu- ation requirements, introduction of computers and word processing, curtailing ol some extra curriculum activities etc., etc. You have adjusted well to all these changes - a factor which is a major part of your total education. 1 would like to congratulate you on your successful comple- tion of high school and to thank you for making the superintendency a gratifying experience for me. William Coscore It gives me great pleasure and pride to extend my congratulations to the Graduating Class of 1984. Commencement exercises mark the formal completion of your public school education, and also signify the beginning of a future of exciting new challenges. I am very confident that you have the capability of meeting these challenges, and I hope that you meet them with the same idealism, courage, and enthusiasm that you have exhibited while in school. May I offer my sincere best wishes for health, happiness, and success in all your endeavors. Heibert H. Curry Herbert Curry, Asst. Superintendent I wish to offer my sincerest congratulations to the members of the class of 1984 for their achievements and contributions. As educated young adults, you must vigorously pursue the search for the causes of injustice, destruction, immorality, corruption, apathy and inequality. You must then strive to present viable alternatives to these social malignancies. The faculty at Chicopee Comprehensive High School is committed to quality education, and the students who were educationally motivated benefitted these past four years. Knowledge is like a meandering brook, and that is, it never stands still. You must continue your search for advanced education. Each person should develop positive goals, ideals and attitudes. The Norwegian Nobel Committee honored Lech Wales a as the burning torch of man ' s inextin- guishable longing for freedom . You should also protect your inalienable rights of freedom by exercising prudent judgement and wisdom in a peaceful, orderly manner while always being cognizant of due process under the law. When we enter the Information Age which deals with microelectronics as the most important of today ' s technologies, you must be prepared to offer the insights and creativity to expand our resources. Your generation will experience some magnificent, revolutionary technological developments which will greatly enhance your standard of living. You will witness great contributions in the biotechnological field, and some of you may be the contributors. Continue your education and become a doer for a better tomorrow. As you know, a counselor is a person who is specially trained to help a student realize his her fullest potential as a unique human being. Consequently, depending on your needs, your counselor can help you: 1. Assess your strengths and limitations. 2. Make suitable decisions. 3. Develop positive attitudes. 4. Choose courses that are right tor you. 5. Solve personal problems. 6. Discover your talents and abilities. 7. Plan your education. 8. Decide on a career. 9. Find a job. A grounding in the skills of language increases an individual ' s ability to think independently and to understand the depth and complexity of life. It is through language that we express not only the objective content of our experience, but also the more subtle coloring and shading of our emotional lives. Paul Midura Mary Filak Students are unaware of the em- phasis given to reading and writing skills in the real world outside the class- room. Reading and writing are skills needed to survive, not just succeed in any career. Students also do not realize that the study of English prepares them for adult life outside of the job market. Adult life outside of one ' s job com- prises far more hours and also requires English skills, whether reading direc- tions, writing a letter or completing tax returns. This is why health education is so important. It is the key to a greater understand- ing of yourself -your mind and body- and the choices you can make to improve and protect your health. If you use the information obtained from your health course and follow through with personal action, your health education will have a positive effect on you. High school courses in health go tar beyond the basic lessons that once made up the major part of the curriculum; they now aim at the far broader goal of helping America ' s young people achieve overall well-being, mental, physical, and social. Understanding Wholistic health will give the students the means to recognize and deal with the problems of life itself. Our own personal journeys into what will be , however, have only just begun. May our past words make a lasting impression on whoever re- members them, and may our future words always express the determination, confidence, and en- durance we have gained during our years at Chi- copee Comprehensive. “What do you think you will miss the most?” “I ' ll miss the girls. ' ' — Stephen Brun- etti “I don ' t even want to think about it. I guess I ' ll miss all my friends, and the great times we had. ' ' — Amy Patla “Donuts and Physics labs. — Tina Martell “Probably the kids. And all the fun we had. — Robin Skibinski “Definitely not Chemistry. — Diane Desmarais “Bringing Tom Dubrieul a lollipop ev- ery day. — Wende Raymond “M M breaks between classes. — Paula Jendrysik “Gossip in A.P. English. — Sue Gir- oux “Breakfast at Abdows. — Anony- mous “The camaraderie of fellow class- mates. — Jim Nichols “A.P. English, force vectors, and Mr. E.O. — D.M.M. “Sharing a locker with Tina Martell. — Lisa Salamon “Having fun. — Rich Laurin “Mr. Happy and the rest of my friends. — Deneen Carr “Not much, really. — Jeanne Lock- hart “Levi ' s. — The Girls in Physics 200 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS A sincere thank-you to all those staff members who helped to make Memini ’84 In Our Own Words a success. The time and effort you have so whole-heartedly put into this year ' s book will not be forgotten. Keep your dreams alive because they symbolize your future existence. We wish you the best of luck in all you. endeavors. A very special “thank-you” to: Mrs. Filak, for an excellent job as our yearbook advisor Mr. Don Lendry, our Josten ' s representative The Greniers Mr. Kuzdzal Mr. Pinciak, and Mrs. Leonard Mr. Martell, Senior Class Advisor The Senior Class Officers Paula Szulc, for being so dedicated to her duties as Sub-Editor of Memini ’84 Mike Boivin and Joyce Mancini, the outstanding Senior Section Editors, for a job well done. Claudette Giguere, for her successful Faculty Section Song from Buck Rogers (Suspension) Words and Music by Glen Larson ® Copyright 1979 by Duchess Music Corporation, New York, N.Y. USED BY PERMISSION. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Up Where We Belong from An Officer and A Gentleman Words by Will Jennings. Music by Buffy Sainte- Marie and Jack Nitzsche. Copyright ® 1982 by Famous Music Corporation, and Ensign Music Corporation. Andrea Chapdelaine, for organizing a very clever Athletic Section layout Paula Jendrysik, for designing the Activities Section with such variety Angelo Manioudakis and the photography staff for their work on the pictorial aspects of Memini ’84 Tony Pelletier and Marianne Paquette for their work on the art and graphics of the book Carrie Aickelin and Scott Peltier for their beautiful and creative Underclassmen Section Bill Wisniewski for his excellent work on the production of the Specialized Academics Section Sue Giroux and the advertising staff for funding the yearbook Michele Fimbel for launching a terrific sales campaign with the subscriptions staff Sandy Allard and the typing staff for their helpful co-operation “. . . and finally . . .” The words we have shared these past four years have become a represen- tation of what lies behind us, and what lies before us. But what lies behind us and what lies before us are minor matters compared to what lies within us. No man ' s words will ever be able to change what was, but we may reflect upon it, and learn from it, and with this wisdom we have gained through our hindsight, we may better be able to piece together the puzzles of the world beyond that in which we now live. 201 DATE DUE
