MEMINI 1981 r- (N oo o CCHS Library I Memini 1981 Volume Eighteen To Douglas Gray, vocational director, who “builds” rainbows each school day — by understanding student needs, by talking with students on a one-to-one basis, by striving to know each of the vocational stu- dents by name, by visiting the shops often. Though he becomes quite busy with admin- istrative duties, he is never too occupied that he may lose touch with the students. He is an educator of concern, understand- ing, and pride. i I I Contents Dedication 2 Opening - ■ Seniors 15 U nderclassmen 51 Specialized Academics 67 Faculty 81 Sports 101 Activities 135 Acknowledgement 174 Advertisements 175 f SENIORS Jackie Baulding, Cheryl Geoffrion, Sue Nadeau SPECIALIZED ACADEMICS Sue Nadeau UNDERCLASSMEN Laurie Hambley 4 SPORTS Assistant Kim Collins, Coleen Nauman FACULTY Cindy Ringenbach ACTIVITIES Sue Tetreault Editors ADVERTISING Kim Garvin, Keith Roy ART Michelle Geoffrion, Assistant Ross Viens PHOTOGRAPHY Brian Wright, Stuart Ritter YEARBOOK SECRETARY Lori St. Germain SUBSCRIPTIONS Michelle Boivin, Diana Monahan EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Robin Roy S 1 ENTERING Comprehensive, one is entering the future. Well-equipped in various preoccupational training. Comp shapes lives and destinies each day. For those students interested in attending college. Advanced Placement courses in such subjects as English and Chemistry are excellent preparatory sessions. The design to choose schedules fairly independently by expanding on guidelines may be one of the greatest assets of the school, allowing individuals to perhaps uncover what they want to pursue in life. J 6 The vocational section is, of course, a unique opportunity to acquire valuable techniques for job placement after high school. Permitting all students to partake in business classes. Comp provides the basis to learn useful skills in typing, bookkeeping, office machines, and shorthand. Telecommunications supplies photography background; independent studies allow students to participate in in-depth subject concentration and range. Work-study programs, music, computer math, art and home-economics — all present paramount chances to improve or discover abilities, occupational or general. The educational focus of Comprehensive is its strongest link to the future. 7 8 Extra- Curricular activities also may set precedents for further study, hobbies, or even possible careers. Office aides may continue their work beyond secondary school; library aides may become profession- al librarians. Hobbies in photography, drama, or astronomy may continue and develop. The debate team, newspaper, and student council are educational experiences, providing insight and awareness. Athletics also play an important role in understanding teamwork and coop eration. After-school organizations build knowledge of leadership, diligence, and perseverance. I ■1 The faculty at Comprehensive is a fine one, molding futures in every class. Teachers, counselors, administrators, and personnel are adept in listening, understanding, sympathizing, and of course, instructing. One’s best friend can be a counselor. 1 13 striving. winning, climbing. and yes, losing, too sometimes all help to build your tomorrow. Comprehensive High School has begun your rainbow. As you leave school for the final time, you hold your future in the palm of your hand, to build your rainbow to its fullest, brighest arch. “Rainbows are memories Sweet dream reminders. What is it you’d like to do?” 14 Mr. Bowden Advisor Holly Cadieux Secretary Riina Koivisto Finland Mr. Martell Advisor RONALD S. This is an ideal class for the avid sports fanatic! Students in this course increase their knowledge of sports by studying Sports Illustrated magazine. Discussions concern such topics as the competitors in the Super Bowl, the Red-Sox Yankee rivalry, and Boston ' s outrageous trades. Contemporary Problems This course is popular with today ' s seniors. Through Newsweek magazine the students are given great insight into such problems as Khomeni and the Iran situation, the murder of John Lennon, and the budget cuts by the government. prerequisite: an inventive mind to think of exciting things to do with old Newsweeks Family Living The students experience marriage and parenthood by preparing a mock ceremony, planning a household budget, and becoming the proud parents of a hard-boiled egg. prerequisite: a hard-boiled egg and the telephone number of a competent egg-sitter. Study If a senior doesn ' t have a psychology research paper or a Library or Pro merito pass, he she can use this time to discover what is happ ening on General Hospital , discuss homework assignments, or catch up on the latest gossip. Do you remember the countless number of forms we filled out? We filled out enrollment forms, federal survey forms, Forms for the yearbook, and forms to ride the bus. We filled out legal name forms so we could graduate, SAT and Achievement forms. And scholarship and application forms. Senior Year was a year of paperwork. Do you remember the way we dressed? We wore Izod alligator shirts, designer jeans, Cheenos, and monogrammed sweaters. We wore Rod Laver shirts. We had perms and precision hair cuts. Senior Year we were preppy. Do you remember how television affected our lives? We rushed home everyday after school to see what Dorian Lord was up to, what was happening in the lives of Luke and Laura, and the developments of the Ann, Jeff, and Heather, and Monica, Rick, and Leslie triangles. Because of the actors ' strike we had to wait six months to find out who shot I. R. Ewing. Senior Year we watched the season ' s new shows in November. Do you remember the things we could count on? We set our watches by the 1:45 announcement for all cars parked in the front of the building to be moved. We could always count on crowded intersections alter every bell. And long lunch lines. Every morning we were ushered out of the halls into homeoom at 7:40. Every day someone asked us for Senior pictures. Texas Instrument calculators frequented the science and math rooms. The day after a concert those who attended said so with the concert ' s T-shirt. What we could count on most was lunch: we had beef and bacon burgers, pizza, and hot dogs once a week. Senior Year was somewhat dependable. Do you remember the election? We went from peanuts to popcorn when the Presidency changed from Carter to Reagan. We voted for Proposition 2V2, a new Superintendent of Schools. Senior Year was a beginning politically. Do you remember our booth at the Kielbasa Festival? Do you remember our brand new football field that we barely used? Do you remember the return of the Pro Merito room after a year ' s absence? Do you remember all the fun we had? We ate at Burger King and HuKe Lau. We had egg fights at Aldenville. We went to the movies and wondered if Darth Vader was really Luke Skywalker ' s father. We stayed home and watched movies on HBO. We had Senior hat days and rallies. We even played musical homerooms which enabled us to be in a different homeroom everyday. Senior Year we worked. We played. We laughed. We cried. Senior Year we traded a familiar way of life for a new, unfamiliar one. Senior Year was our last reprieve from the real world. Senior Year WAS WONDERFUL!!!! —Jackie Baulding UNDERC 3 3NI0j?5- Oniy one year left with three years gone; We have many fond memories to carry on. Good times and bad times with friends have passed With the coming and going of our class. Our Candy Sale and Magazine Drive became a success, Because our class believed we were the best. We started a tradition of carnations on St. Patrick ' s Day. This custom will stay with us all the way. The Junior Prom and the Christmas Cotillion highlighted the year Providing more memories which we hold dear. Our school spirit was beaming like a hero When we won Powder Puff football 16-0. While in Comp, we have realized that hard work and determination Would help us gain knowledge needed for a good education. Time and time again, we have had disappointments. Only to find they were steps toward accomplishments. As decisions for our future round near. We continue to pretend that we have no fear. Comp has given us a step in the right direction. So the rest of our steps should be made toward perfection. Vocational Vocational Education trains students in a given trade so that they can be gainfully employed when they complete 1500 hours (or three years) in the vocational department. The trades include auto body, auto repair, welding, machine shop, machine drafting, electronics, electrical, small engine, cabinet, and power stitching. Students have academic classes for one half the day, then report to their shops for the remaining four periods. The program involves over four hundred fifty students from all of Chicopee. The Vocational Cooperative Education provides qualified senior vocational students with an opportunity to leave school at the end of their academic classes and report to a cooperative employer for paid on-the-job training. Students who have completed two years of instruction in their trades can be reccommended for this privilege. This program is the goal for every vocational student. Just as the objective of a college preparatory students is a college degree, the final goal of a vocational student is employment in his her chosen vocational field. As Mr. Howard Walker will be retiring after the 1981 year, special congratulations are in order for his many years of vocational training. Auto Body Auto Repair • I i iiu Machine Shop 71 Cabinet ■r Power Stitching Distributive Education The Distributive Education course involves seniors who choose either to study retailing in college or to go directly into the business world. In classes and in the actual operation of the school store, the students learn how to run a retail business. The skills include markup, buying, marketing, and picking out rnaterials at low cost. DECA students gain practical knowledge and experience which ensures placement in jobs after high school. Since there are many facets of communications such as engineering, production, and advertising, the program incorporates students from all courses of study. Over sixty juniors and seniors from both Comp and Chicopee High travel to Westover Air Force Base for two periods a day. This year, Telecom has increased programming for Chicopee Cable Channel 5 to include Chicopee Board of Aldermen Meetings as well as School Committee meetings and more basketball and football games. The fact that the number of applicants exceeds the number that can be accepted proves that the telecommunications program is a great Telecommunications .success. Mr, John Dumont-Telecommunications Director Mr. Ken Kostek-Photography Instructor 77 Nursery School The nursery school is a fairly new program, prepared and operated by the childcare classes at Comprehensive. The three- week session, at- tended by over fifteen preschoolers, includes circle time, learning centers, creative arts, and large motor skill activiites, along with a nutritious snack and free play time. The high school students learn by observation and by instructing. The goal of the childcare course and the nursery school program is to introduce students to a vocation in effective parenting or professional childcare work. The program not only proves to be a valuable community ser- vice, but also provides an exciting and fun learning experience. Special thanks to Mr. Gray, Mr. McClelland, Mrs. Barnes, Mrs. Burch, Mr. Cutter, and Mr. Dumont. FACULTY Douglas A. Gray Vocational Director To the graduating class ot 1981: The words most commonly used when addressing graduates are success” and happiness . Each of us has, some to a larger and others to a smaller degree, some control over our success and happiness. One must start with setting of values. All of you have done this: your decision to graduate from high school indicates that you have established education and job training as a value. As you enter the adult world you begin to set priorities as to what your accomplishments should be in the immediate future. These priorities will change and will be eliminated, strengthened or weakened as time goes on You will discover that competition is the backbone of our economic and social structure. Competition is very healthy. However, competition is healthiest when it centers on competing with one ' s own self. If your job skills are improving each year, if your golf score is lower each year, if your interests are deepening and expanding each year, if your human relations are more rewarding each year, if your civic responsibilities are increasing each year, etc., you are successfully competing. I should like to point out that life is full of disappointments and they should be considered as learning situations from which new hope and endeavors should be launched. In closing I urge you to discard the social philosophy of the past twenty years which is based on the tenet that individuals are not responsible lor their misdeed or indiscretions but that we are victims of society. YOU ARE SOCIETY! WILLIAM COSCORE, SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Patricia Cooper Alice M. Kovitch Administration Mitchell S. Kuzdal Principal To the class of 1981; The foundation of your future has been expanded and strengthened in the past four school years. Your future will be predicated on how you will be willing to challenge the unknown that will confront you in the futuristic era-the computer age. You must be willing to probe the mystic and the unknown through your constant effort to improve either in the academia or the vocational schools. Accept the fact that material abundance without character is the surest way to death. Learn to cope with the many societal malignancie s that endeavor to pinch us to stagnation, hatred and suffocation. Learn to appreciate the beauty and the many virtues that life extols upon us, by extending our heartfelt feeling to all of society. May each and every one of you grow in stature to provide us with a world of sincerity, truth, love, admiration, and, with respect, to accept one another as a real, humane person. Mitchell S. This year the festival was held on September 5th, 6th, and 7th behind the Fairfield Mall. The seniors at Comp planned to get themselves involved. The homeroom representatives met with advisors Roger Bowden and Neil Martell to discuss plans for building a booth. Because school began on the third of Sepfember, the festival provided all seniors with the opportunity to get involved and renew school spirit for the 1980-81 year. Administration and students working together, the booth was completed on time lor the festival and was a successful senior activity. i I ' m gonna win a prize. My turn. The debate season is considered extremely successful, educational, and satisfying by team members and team advisor Robert Merkel. The team attended the Forty-First Annual Model Congress on the campus of American International College in January, but failed to pass any legislation, mainly due to inexperience in legislative procedure. Attendance at the Congress, however, was considered one of great value by all team members. Prospects for 1982 look even brighter as five underclassmen will be returning to the team. Graduating from the team are; Coleen Nauman, MaryAnn Rubis, and Tom Demers. The As Schools Match Wits team consists of a group of students trying tor positions on the tour- person television team.
