Cutter Ernest Goff Senior Class Advisors Society requires participation on behalf of all the community. Your four years at Comprehensive High School have been marked by various degrees of participation from your academic to your social endeavors. In the end great classes, like great societies depend not only on their leaders but their citizens ' ability to see the need to participate. Participation requires sacrifice, caring, and love. It is hoped that in some way being a part of Comprehensive High School and the class of ' 80 that you, as a class, and as individuals, have been able to leave to Comp the class gift of outstanding participants. As your class advisors, it has been our privilege to participate with all of you in your growth from sophomores to seniors. We can assure you all that your class has helped develop an on going tradition of participation at Comp. On a personal basis, our participation with you in your class activities has helped us grow in our stewardship as teachers of youth. The future holds promise of fulfillment for only those who choose to be participants in the life around them. I ADVISOR DANA C. CUTTER PRESIDENT BART BOISSONNEAULT TREASURER SHARON JAMROK VICE PRESIDENT BARBARA LIGGON To the class of 1980: In writing this letter, I am reminded of the many experiences we have shared together during our four years at Chicopee Comprehensive High School. Not only have we worked together to become a strong united class, but also, we have become mature, responsible individuals. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each individual who has made my three years as president enjoyable. Our class advisors deserve a special thanks for all their time, effort and guidance in helping our class, the class of 1980, become united. The time has come for us to go our separate ways. Although our paths may differ, the memories of the friendships we have shared will always be with us. Thank you for making Comprehensive a wonderful memory and best of luck in your future endeavors. Continue your search for the truth without fear that those who have less compassion for mankind will know that there are people in this world who do not place material, political, or social lust and greed for power as their primary objective of success. The knowledgeable, learned individual must open the doors of justice to all if we, as people, can survive in this divided world that exists. As young adults you have the opportunity to make a significant and lasting contribution in the restora- tion of faith, trust, integrity and confidence amongst all the peoples of the world. I extend to each graduate my sincerest and warm- est congratulation and that you may apply your knowledge and understanding to help those who are less fortunate than you. Mitchell S. The entire student body assembled in the newly renovated gym to cheer on its athletes. Sports teams ranging from football to field hockey, and cheer leading to cross-country were wished good luck by both the students and the administration. The coaches of the teams addressed the gathering by commending Comp ' s support of its athletic programs. All four of the classes eagerly showed their Comprehensive spirit with their deafening yells and shouts. The whole school was truly united for this first rally of the 1979- ' 80 year. CHRISTMAS RALLY Before Christmas vacation the school gathered together for the Christmas Concert. The chorus, under the direction of Miss Powers, sang a program of Christmas carols. Senior Alana Peloquin performed her solo to an entranced audience. During the concert the totals for both the canned food and the “Toys for Tots drives were revealed. “Toys for Tots committee members Barb Nauman and Joanne Strepka proudly announced the record- breaking figures for their program. The cans from the canned food drive were hauled into the gymnasium by the seniors who had spent days collecting them from all parts of Chicopee. i m-. W+ -i B f ' , PJ COMP BAND The Chicopee Comprehensive High School Band is one of the best bands of its size in the state. Under the direction and guidance of Mr. Sittard, the band has distinguished itself in a variety of ways. In competition the band has accumulated numerous awards and honors. The supreme musicianship of the band is evident both in parade and on stage. Other sections of the band such as the rifle corps, flag corps, honor guard, and the majorettes add to the color and pageantry of their performances with their precise showmanship. The Comp Band is surely one of the most outstanding features of the school. 147 EXCHANGE RALLY The Comp vs. Chicopee High football game weekend began with the Exchange Rally. The rally got off to an exciting start as the freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors cheered for their own classes, but soon the shouts went up for the members of the football team. The team, especially the seniors, were loudly applauded. After a program of speeches and performances by the cheerleaders of both schools. Comp students were treated to a surprise visit from retired principal Stanley Ziemba. Enthusiasm ran high as the mighty Comp Colt trounced the Chicopee High spider and as the band played the school song. HOOTIN’ RALLY The 1979- ' 80 Homecoming Weekend continued with the Hootin ' Rally which was held Friday, Nov. 9. The varsity cheerleading squad began the evening by doing a dance to the song Shake Your Groove Thing”. Then the lovely senior powderpuff cheerleaders appeared. The girls successfully led the crowd in spirit-rousing cheers and amazed everyone with their pyramid. The next event was the choosing of football queens. Freshman Terri Polmatier, sophomore Terry Cataw, and junior Donna Pray were chosen by their classes. The Senior Class gave Jackie Fontaine the honor of Homecoming Queen. Music was provided by the group OZ. j,v I 1 I! f . r t ; f t. - h i 1 SPAGHETTI SUPPER After a soggy Comp vs. Chicopee High football game, the crowd went back to Comp for the traditional Spaghetti Supper. A hard-working committee of seni ors prepared the meal and provided the colorful blue and gold decorations. The weather did not dampen the spirits of the fans as was proved by their singing and cheering. Football coaches Llodra, Huhtamaki, and Christant took the opportunity to award the top senior players with trophies. Honors were given to Bob Fortin for Most Valuable Offensive Player, Doug Steinbock for Most Valuable Defensive Player, and Ron Desimone for Most Valuable Senior. Coach Llodra was also given a cake to celebrate his birthday. COTILLION The annual Christmas Cotillion was held Dec. 27 at the Rodeway Inn in Chicopee. The theme of this year ' s affair was Winter Wonderland . After enjoying a hearty meal, the couples were able to relax by dancing to the music of the group The Continentials . Socializing went on from 7 p.m. ' til midnight. The Cotillion was a great success because, unlike in other years, members of all four classes were allowed to participate. NEW WING DEDICATION On December 30, 1979 at 2:30 P.M., the new wing addition was formally designated the Stanley J, Ziemba Instructional Media Center. Dedicated to Stanley Ziemba, the former principal of Chicopee Comp for 17 years, the large, well equipped IMC and addition provide many new, excellent educational facilities. Special guests included Reverends Joseph Burke and Robert Price, Noel H. Pickup, Chairman of the Building Committee, Mayor John P. Moylan, Thomas W. O ' Donnell, School Committee Chairman, Dr. John M. Luke, Superintendent of Schools, and Gary Smith, 1978 Class President. All who attended agreed that upon the new wing ' s completion, Chicopee Comp has become one of the best secondary school buildings and campuses in the entire area. TELECOM One of the most unique features of Comp is the existence of the Telecommunications department. In Telecom students are able to gain firsthand experience in the vocations of creative arts and broadcasting. Each day the students must travel to the Telecom Center at Westover Air Force Base to take their classes. Here they learn their courses in the television studio, the darkroom, and the graphic arts area. The television programs that they produce and direct are eventually seen on the local cable TV Channel 5. mj w VOCATIONAL The Vocational Education Division is an integral part of Chicopee Comprehensive High School. This educational department is set aside for students who, instead of pursuing an academic education, would rather prepare themselves for immediate entrance into the working world after graduation. Rep. for setting the wheels in motion Mr. Larry Grenier, et. al. for their time and willingness to provide us with great photos Mrs. Julie Leonard for her leaving time in her busy schedule for advice and assistance Mr. Ernest Goff and Mr. Dana Cutter, Advisors The Class of 1980 for the $1800 boost for colored senior portraits, and their cooperation The theme of this year ' s MEMINI is appropriately Changes. Ahead of us is a decade of economic, political, scientific, and social change — a dynamic future, no matter how remote it seems, that we will inevitably share. How we meet these future changes is what the past four years have taught us, what we all have learned. MEMINI 1980 is an at- tempt to capture these last four years of prepara- tion: we leave Chicopee Comp as children of the ' 70 ' s and face our future challenge as leaders of the ' 80 ' s. In accordance with Changes, the staff has al- ready begun breaking ground with changes in ME- MINI itself. By converting to the less expensive Cam- eo program, we have been able to budget more of our funds into extra pages and a supplement. In the ensuing years of rising inflation, we feel that this package is the wisest choice, in view of the increas- ing difficulty in harnassing ads; besides, the Cameo program is more than adequate. Because we col- leced an unprecedented $5500 in advertisements, we were able to increase MEMINI 1980 to 200 pages, 8 more than usual. Also, the senior portraits have been processed in color for the first time thanks to the willing cooperation of the senior class and advisors. Finally, because we placed much more influence on the future, rather than the memories themes of past yearbooks, we infused MEMIN1 1980 with modern designs and artwork for a more futuristic appearance. We, the editors and staff, hope that we have suc- cessfully provided the Class of 1980 with a year- book that accurately reflects their lives at Chico- pee Comp. We wish you all the best of luck. Music was pro- vided by the Continentals with dancing until midnight. Each senior was presented with a brandy snifter engraved with the night ' s theme: We May Never Pass This Way Again”, a song composed and popularized by performers Seals and Crofts. Nearly all the seniors turned out for the occasion which became a night that each will al- ways remember fondly. SENIOR BANQUET The 1980 Senior Banquet, held at Chez Josef Restaurant in Agawam on the evening of June 5, was the seniors ' last convention before graduation the following evening. After a sitdown dinner and a series of speeches by the administration, Memini 1980 was presented to the class by editors James Moran and Barbara Nauman and dedicated to Vice Principal Julie Leonard. Music and dancing followed with the help of the Continentals. The seniors were in a very happy, very rowdie mood whether they were dancing, signing autographs, or just talking with good friends. Graduation night, June 6, 1980, will always be remembered as beautiful for the students, parents, and friends who attended. The exercises were performed on the renovated football field below the stuffed-to- capacity bleachers - an audience well over two thousand. After the guests were greeted, salutatorian James Morgan and Valedictorian Barbara Liggon delivered the ad- dress and farewell speeches re- spectively. Presently, Mayor Kumor presented each senior with a diplo- ma and a handshake. Finally, class president Bart Boissonneault dis- solved the Class of 1980 and led them away as graduates. GRADUATION
