EffiStv! J I -T J 1 p— f A ■ ■ ■ jj | Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. ■rWA Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. 5 If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you. no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. 11 Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. and whatever your labors and aspirations. in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world, Be careful. Strive to be happy 14 MR. MARTELL Life presents a multitude of challenges. These challenges, whether to an individual or to a group of individuals, are more easily faced with the assistance and guidance of a friend who cares. In the last four years, we the members of the Class of 1978 have met a number of challenges, among them the difficulties of maturing into adulthood. Two men, as teachers and advisors, helped us face these challenges successfully. They have not only watched us mature in the past four years, but also guided us through them. In gratitude for their valuable assistance, Memini 1978 is dedicated to these two men; Mr. Neil Martell and Mr. Roger Bowden. MR. BOWDEN 15 If VOU V you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you. If you can trust yourself when alhnen doubt you But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting. Or, being lied about, don ' t deal in lies Or being hated, don ' t give way to hating, - And yet don ' t look too good, or talk too wise; If you can dream-and not make dreams your njaster;. If you can tbink-and not make thoughts your aim. If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you ' ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools. Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ' em up with worn-out to u ■i If you can make one heap of all our winnings; And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss. And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; Jif you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: Hold on! ' If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue. Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch. If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you. If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty second ' s worth of distance run. Yours is the Earth and everything that ' s in it, And-which is more-you ' ll be a man my son! Emily Dickinson 47 PRESIDENT-GARY SMITH To the Class of 1978: As 1 am writing this letter, I begin to remember all the times we have spent together. In our own special way, whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually, each one of us has had an important part in shaping the Class of 1978. Together we have learned the importance of friendship, trust, and responsibility. These values will always be with us to share with others as we go on in life. On behalf of the Class of ' 78, 1 would like to thank all of you who contributed to the class. Special thanks go to our advisors who donated so much of their time and energy to make our projects a success. Although the time has now come where we must go our separate ways, the memories we have of each other will always be with us. Thank you for the memories and good luck in your life ahead. Dr. John M. Luke Superintendent of Schools TO THE CLASS OF 1978: Your commencement marks an important step in a con- tinuing process of meeting challenges and applying your knowledge to seek solutions. This can be a very satisfying role. Samuel Johnson once said, Life affords no greater plea- sure than that of surmounting difficulties, passing from one step of success to another, forming new wishes and seeing them gratified.” These words embody my wish for your future. May the education you have received in the Chicopee schools prepare you with the resources you need to meet difficulties and, upon meeting them, set your sights on reaching beyond. Congratulations to you on previous successes and may good health and happiness accompany you in your future. William Mielke Coordinator of Secondary Education Sophie J. Chmura Assistant Supt. of Schools 92 Stanley J. Ziemba Principal TO THE CLASS OF 1978 — It has been a pleasure for me as Principal of Comprehen- sive High School to have worked with you for the past four years. During these four years you have experienced joyous times as well as sad moments. Your four years at Comprehensive High School have giv- en you an excellent idea of what your future years will be like. You have worked diligently and with enthusiasm toward attaining your high school diploma. Your class has worked cooperatively with your officers and with the school and the result of your efforts is the receiving of a diploma. Congratulations on a job well done. I wish you continued success in whatever you do as well as happiness and good health during every day of your life. Mitchell Kuzdal Vice-Principal Julie Leonard Asst. This is partly due to the outstanding coaches we have here. I would like to thank these coaches for their help and guidance throughout the years. -Mike Klofas By participating on various sports teams, I have had the opportunity to learn how to interact and cooperate with many different types of people. -Gail Koziara I ' ve learned there is more to sports then winning, with a four year record of 0- 37-3, our field hockey team certainly learned the true meaning of sportsmanship. Good luck to next year ' s team. -Lynne LaPierre J WH r cjr gjjn s ' s ' |pw My four years of Comp athletics have helped me mature through happy times and adversities. -Dan Mardeusz My participation in high school sports is something I ' ll always remember, and running will always stay with me. -Ben Matzko My four years her.e at Comp wouldn ' t have been the same without the great athletic program. Even though I hope to play a sport in college. I ' m going to miss the sports program here very much. -Steve Monroe Playing varsity hockey for three years made me realize that senior year was the most important year of my hockey career, because I realized after senior year, hockey is over. I ' ve enjoyed these past four years and I ' m going to miss it. -Mike Zalewa 146 ACTIVITIES 147 EXCHANGE RALLY The entire student body attended the annual Exchange Rally, held on November 10th, 1977 in the Comp gymnasium. The students ' spirit and cheers supported the football team which was preparing for the biggest game of the season between Comp and rival Chicopee High. Seniors showed their enthusiasm by participating in Senior Hat Day, also held on this date. After the Chicopee Chicopee Comp foot- ball game on November 12th, the tradition- al Spaghetti Supper was held in Comp ' s cafeteria. Despite the team ' s loss, the stu- dent body ' s appreciation toward the team effort was tremendous. The awards: Colt of the Year, Best Offensive Player and Best Defensive Player, were given to the play- ers: Dan Mardeusz, Bob Ranck, and Henry Dent, respectively, for their achievements. This date was also a Happy Birthday for Coach Joe Llodra, and so ended the Chico- pee Chicopee Comp weekend. SPAGHETTI SUPPER 150 POWDER PUFF On the morning of November 11th, the Seniors skunked the Juniors in the traditional Powder Puff Football Game, by a score of 40-zip. The powderpuffers were rooted on by their gorgeous cheerleaders, yelling from the sidelines and providing half-time entertainment. The Seniors were coached by Neil Martell and Roger Bowden, while Robert Merkel and Lance Mason coached the Juniors. The game was an all out effort by each team and the Juniors are wished the best of luck next year. V. 3? Approximately 4000 cans were collected in a joint effort by the Senior and Junior classes. The Sophomores and Freshmen also contributed greatly for a total of over 7000 cans. Great thanks must also be attributed to Mrs. Lilian Semmel for her outstanding efforts in collecting about $1000.00 for the drive. Without the assistance of the Lodge of Elks this year, the Comp student body showed its immense concern and ability to get the job done. Christmas Concert The Chicopee Comp Band and Chrous entertained the student body and faculty with a 90 minute presentation of Christmas carols, both instrumental and vocal. Mr. Chris Ceanacopoulos highlighted the event by reciting the poem, Twas the Night Before Christmas , accompanied by the band. Mrs. Lilian Semmel was greatly surprised when she was presented an arrangement of poinsettias. The concert was held on December 23rd as students prepared for the long awaited Christmas vacation. Cotillion The group, “White Satin provided the entertainment for this year ' s Christmas Cotillion. Approximately 150 couples attended the dance dressed in semiformal attire. The poem, “Winter Whispers was the theme this year. The Cotillion was held at Our Lady of the Elms College from 7:30 p.m. until midnight on December 17, 1977.
