Kuzdzal for his interest in and his concern for us all, his devotion to his job, and his friendliness that has shown him to be a person as well as an administrator. Mw 1973 another year goes by; the wheel turns and the seniors don their caps and gowns; the underclassmen pass through corridors long since void of alumni ' s footsteps; the faculty awaits the same new faces; and the wheel turns; another year goes by. But 1973 will be remembered by all who spent their lives, laughed their smiles, and cried their tears, and left a part of themselves at Comp that year. AND ALL THOSE FAMILIAR FACES ALWAYS REMEMBERED ! 1 . |y JJ, 5 d IS 9 3 i 1 ■ 1, i n + K A -i 55 i 1 1 ' X i IS THE EVERYDAY GRIND OF CLASSES AND STUDIES THE SPECIAL EVENTS OF THE YEAR TO THE CLASS OF 1973: It gives me great pleasure and pride to extend my best wishes to the graduating class of 1973. Many changes have occurred in society, education, and the world since you first started kindergar- ten. Few would have imagined the extent of these changes. The world you are about to enter will offer many challenges. Hopefully, the direction and pattern for contributing to society has been made a part of your total school environment. May you in adult life select those avenues which will benefit man and make him more understanding of what cliches like brotherhood ' con- cern for others and life are all about. Do not allow any one or any thing to tarnish your idealism. By doing this, you will create a better world for tomorrow. Best wishes for success, health, and happiness in all your future endeavors. Sincerely, George E. Membrino, Ph.D. Superintendent of Schools 14 WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN Dr. Membrino left his position as Superintendent of Schools to be- come Administrator to the New Medical West, which made the class of 73 the last recipients of a gradua- tion message from him. His retire- ment party, held in the home ec room at Comp, was the second of the year. The first was to celebrate Mr. Ziemba ' s birthday. Mr. Morissette became the new Assistant Vice-Principal at the Annex when Mr. Jendrysik relinquished the post to return to a teaching position . MEMORIES OF RALLIES , THE POWDER PUFF GAME , AND ALL THE SPECTACLE LEADING UP TO THE CHICOPEE GAME At the exchange rally with Chi- copee High the day before the Comp-Chicopee game Comp ' s cheerleaders stomped the spi- der in the vain hope that the football team might be able to do the same. That afternoon the se- nior Powder-Puffers blanked the juniors 12 to 0. The morning of the game, Linda Kalita led the motorcade to Szot Park on her Arabian, Alazizat Astran. 9 CL. cp n i Wsp ?! AND THE SPAGHETTI DINNER AFTERWARDS The Class of 73 carried on a tradition that almost died after its first year when it again sponsored the Annual Spaghetti Dinner after the Comp-Chicopee football game. The dinner proved its merit by bringing in a profit for the class even though Comp lost the game. Seniors Ernie McCool and John Beaudoin, and junior Dave Mc- Kissick were awarded trophies for their outstanding work in the game, and Coach Llodra ' s birth- day was celebrated by presenting him with a cake. For many seniors it will be remembered as a time of class unity, and the enjoyment it brought to all who attended or participated will easily oversha- dow the long hours of hard work it required. 18 It (mu ' CIS u ytffl 0 i fai OF THE MOUSETRAP The Mousetrap by Agatha Chris- tie became the longest running senior class play in the history of Comp in December of 1972. Even though its four performances here can ' t compare with the more than ten years it has been on the stage in London it was the first senior play in four years to make a profit for the class. The play is a murder mys- tery with a psychotic killer as one of eight people snowbound in a secluded boarding house. One of the people is murdered, and no one knows who the murderer is. Miss Green, the director, partially double cast the play to give more people a chance to participate. The cast consisted of Helene Anninos, Ruth Chase, Kevin Delisle, Bonnie Duval, Kathy Martin, Allan Nubile, Carlos Rexach, Ted Tamburro, Stanley Thompson, and Bonnie Wilson, with Linda Hoff as assistant director and Howard Dombeck as stage manager. OF WINTER SNOW CANNED FOODS AND PARTIES AND A NOEL ENCHANTEE The spirit of Christmas was high, for students and faculty collected enough canned foods and money on behalf of the Lodge of Elks to feed about 150 needy families in Chicopee, more than have ever before been helped. Santa Claus made his yearly rounds with his helpers to spread happiness and good will throughout the school. The band, chorus, and madrigal all worked to- gether to help Santa bring across his message of peace and joy at the Christ- mas assembly. Instead of the usual setting of the cafeteria for the Christmas Cotillion, the background was the Corinthian Room at the Schine Inn. Noel Enchan- tee was a product of the junior and se- nior classes, and it was a special cotil- lion for each. It was the first for the ju- niors to plan, and the last for the seniors. 26 LASTLY COME MEMORIES OF ONESELF ALONE IN AN EMPTY G YM OR ALONE WITH ONE OTHER PERSON OF JOYS OF TRAGEDIES OF GOOD TIMES AND NOT SO GOOD OF LIFE 29 1973 Class Advisors Philip C. Airoldi Neil R. Martell As we look back over the past four years we can see how much you, as individuals, have matured. And, by this self-maturation process, you have enabled the class of 1973 to grow. Recognizing the need to function as a group you start- ed the policy of having the candy sale in the unifying sophomore year. We feel that this was an important ele- ment leading to a vigorous class spirit that has maintained itself throughout your years at Comprehensive, and will, hopefully, the rest of your lives. For many of you, merely the mention of the spaghetti dinner will bring back thoughts of working together. Be- cause of your creative spirit a new tradition has been established. Now, as you prepare to leave your high school years behind, we would like to express our thanks to you for allowing us to share your ideas, your emotions, and your ideals. The proper thing now would be to say Good- bye” or Good Luck , but we will refrain because that is commonplace and does not express what we truly feel in our hearts. Philip G. Airoldi Neil R. You have successfully completed the requirements for a high school diploma and now you enter the ever growing group called Alumni. You have truly been a most outstanding class. The accomplishments of this class are many and I congratulate you on a job well done. Under the able coaching of Alex Vyce, the Comprehensive Cross Country Team ran to its third consecutive winning season. The colt harriers have not had a losing season since they began racing. The 7 and 2 season record brings their overall record to 22 and 5. The team surprised supporters with their success, amazing considering the fact that the team is young and inexperi- enced with only one senior, Tom Landry. Nevertheless the Colts defeated all their Valley League opposition except for Holyoke and Holyoke Catholic, two pow- ers of the region; they also placed fourth of 17 schools in the Western Mass, meet at Amherst, running without Rich Rudolph and captain Jim Ash, both injured. Outstanding in the Amherst meet was Dan Dillon, whose second place finish, only four seconds off the winning pace, qualified him for the state meet in Boston, where he placed 18th out of 208 runners. Other runners who turned in fine per- formances during the season were Bob Celatka and Jim Houle, who at Amherst placed 27th and 31st, respectively, and Jim Dillon. 128 SCORES Comp 15 44 Tech 18 41 Longmeadow 18 40 W. The one goal came on a shot by Rick Jasinski on a feed by Kevin Quirk. Never before had Chico- pee been beaten by the Colts. The Comp booters, playing in a division with W. Mass exchamps Chicopee and Ludlow, ended the season with a 8-3-1 record and moved on to the tourney playoffs. In the first game against St. John ' s the Colts dominated play and won 4 to 1. In a tense quarterfinal bat- tle, however, the Colts lost to their old nemisis Chicopee by a 1 to 0 score. Named to the All W. Mass. Teams were high scorer Kevin Quirk and se- nior Mike Lafleur. The stars of the afternoon were Shel- ley Palmer and Cheryl Kliendienst, se- nior running backs; Pam Beck, senior quarterback; and Ester Daris, who in- tercepted a junior pass and ran it back for 70 yards. The girls were not the only ones who held the attention of the crowd. The antics of the padded male cheerleaders and the music of the mock band kept everyone in stitches. The senior girls were coached by Mr. Martell, Mr. Airoldi, and Mr. Stachura, and the Juniors by Mr. Goff. 37 Colts Struggle Through Tough Season The Comp football team, suffering from injuries through most of the sea- son, ended the season with a record of 4-5. The season was disappointing in two respects. It was Comp ' s first losing season under Coach Llodra, and the Colts lost the cross city contest with rival Chicopee. Before the season started the team began to take injuries. Seniors Bob Moore and Steve Russell and starting quarterback John Bialas and the toll increased until at one point of the sea- son over half the starting line-up was out. The Colts began the season against perennial power Holyoke High, which was riding a 79 game unbeaten streak. The two teams battled to a scoreless tie until the Purple Knights scored with only two minutes left in the game. Comp rebounded the next Saturday to beat West Springfield, but then dropped the next three games. Half- way through the season the Colts be- gan to move and won all their remain- ing games except for the 26 to 6 loss to Chicopee. Among the players who were recog- nized for their work during the season were; Gary Masse, who took over the quarterbacking position for injured John Bialas; tackle Tom Barker; high scorer and MVP senior Dwayne Tuggs; most valuable senior in the Chicopee game, Ernie McCool; and John Beau- doin and Dave McKissick, voted most valuable offensive and defensive play- ers at the Chicopee game. .. ! id .. ■ -tv • s, - vv;. r • ; . All young people need to develop salable skills and those understand- ings and attitudes that make the worker an intelligent and productive participant in our economic life. To this end , they need supervised work experiences as well as education in the skills and knowledge of their occupations. Fifty-three percent of the total job opportunities exist in the distribu- tive occupations. Our program is an introduction to the job opportunities in the fields of marketing, distribution and retailing. Students in the pro- gram take English, Economics, Sales and Merchandise. After period four they report to their work stations. The students are rated twice a month at their work stations by their employers and the teacher-coordinator . All students enrolled in Distributive Education should realize that this choice of curriculum requires proper personal conduct, attention to per- sonal appearance and hygiene. Major emphasis is placed on attendance and the ability of students to develop attitudes and work habits that will help them to take advantage of the many job opportunities available in the distribution field. D.E. students have a varied classroom experience from books, to exam- ples of store fixtures, and related field trips to various local business es- tablishments. There are learning kits related to various businesses includ- ing film strips, 16 MM films and records. D.E. students are also a social organization with local, state and national affiliations. Our efforts are geared to integrating these experiences into career directions so that the students, if able, will go on to school and become store managers.
