I touched the sky when I was small, But not before I scraped my knee. I grasped the tumbling leaves in fall. And scrambled up an apple tree. When school was such a kindergarten. Alphabets and telling time. Excitement so surrounded then The riches of a single dime. More wondrous was each Saturday! I spinned and watched the world go ' round. With arms spread wide, cares spun away. And I fell laughing to the ground. When mornings brought the sun to me. When music was the rain, I dreamed of what I wished to be. Then laughed out loud again. I drew the world in crayon. And giggled at cartoons. Forever would my life sail on Like carnival balloons? The sky is farther from me now Than when I was a child. I ' m learning all reality can teach. It ' s been the longest time since the sun Looked down and smiled. And the Saturdays I knew soar out of reach. Karen Whalen 14
