□ IS THE ESSENCE OF LIFE, 60 C 5-h D CONTRAST I have died in Vietnam. But I have walked the face of the moon. I have divided schools with my prejudice. But 1 have sent armies to unite them. 1 have beat down my enemies with clubs. But I have built courtrooms to keep them free. I have outraged my brothers in the alleys of the ghettos. But I have transplanted a human heart. 1 have watched children starve from my golden towers. But I have fed half of the earth. I am ashamed. But I am proud. dedication student life seniors . . . . class history faculty . . . . vocational activities . . sports . . . . advertising . 2 I am I. I am unique, And in this uniqueness lies my identity. I assimilate facets of my environment. Incorporating some immediately. Adding one more unit to my building of being. Others I savor and ponder. Tasting them for personal suitability. Some I file for future reference. Nothing is discarded. Refuse of a regimented mind. I reach out to the world. Extending sensitive fingers To probe that which I do not understand. 1 feel. And for this feeling I am vulnerable to pain. I can be crushed by the blow of a well-aimed word As well as by a fist. I think. I wonder why. And I construct analogies to link ideas. 1 criticize myself And listen to the truth of my existence. I hear with attuned ears the message of my soul. I live. Carol Ciosek BROTHERHOOD The road is long. With many a winding turn That lead us to who knows where; But I ' m strong. Strong enough to care. He ain ' t heavy, he ' s my brother. So along we go; His welfare is my concern; No burden is he to bear. We ' ll get there; For I know He would not encumber me. He ain ' t heavy, he ' s my brother. If I ' m leaning at all. I ' m leaning with sadness; That everyone ' s heart is not filled With the gladness and love For one another. It ' s a long, long road From which there is no return. While we ' re on the way to there. Why not share? And the load doesn ' t weigh me down at all. He ain ' t heavy, he ' s my brother. 8 v. ' Awwwwmv It is the task of the liberal institution, as of the liberally educated man, continually to translate troubles into issues and issues into the terms of their human meaning for the individual. Through El IDTJCA-TIOnST 9 C. Wright Mills ram REEVALUATION If I could convince myself that I have any right to be satisfied with men as they are, and to treat them accordingly, and not according, in some re- spects, to my requisitions and expectations of what they and I ought to be, then, like a good Mussulman and fatalist, I should endeavor to be satisfied with things as they are, and say it is the will of God. Henry David Thoreau 12 I touched the sky when I was small, But not before I scraped my knee. I grasped the tumbling leaves in fall. And scrambled up an apple tree. When school was such a kindergarten. Alphabets and telling time. Excitement so surrounded then The riches of a single dime. More wondrous was each Saturday! I spinned and watched the world go ' round. With arms spread wide, cares spun away. And I fell laughing to the ground. When mornings brought the sun to me. When music was the rain, I dreamed of what I wished to be. Then laughed out loud again. I drew the world in crayon. And giggled at cartoons. Forever would my life sail on Like carnival balloons? The sky is farther from me now Than when I was a child. I ' m learning all reality can teach. It ' s been the longest time since the sun Looked down and smiled. And the Saturdays I knew soar out of reach. Karen Whalen 14 We here at Comp feel honored to have in our midst a compassionate man who harbors such an enduring faith and interest in students that we gratefully accept this opportunity to express our esteem for him. For those who have become acquainted with him, he has been a friend as well as a counselor and has labored selflessly to help students find and fulfill their goals and ambitions. He has respected our dreams and individualities, thereby opening widely the door to communication. For this we are truly thankful and therefore dedicate the 1970 Memini to MR. Al- though a generally optimistic feeling prevailed during the first few years, troubled undercurrents exploded in the second half of the decade, beginning with the Watts riots. Race, youth, violence, life- styles, and, above all, the Vietnam war became the major stimulants of restlessness, uncertainty, and strife. To some, the Sixties were an era when civilization itself came under siege and traditional values and institutions were not only questioned, but opposed. To others, the Sixties stood out as a time when honest efforts were made to face up to some long-standing grievances in this world. However, all people were united in the hope that out of this travail would come forth a better world. Appeals for an end to American involvement in Vietnam, the draft, the nuclear and bio- logical arms race, and war itself came forth from both young idealists and distinguished adults who were sensitive not only to inhu- manity, but to the need to concentrate our efforts upon pressing problems at home. Dr. Benjamin Spock Amid national turmoil, Americans were brought together in their grief over the assassinations of three revered men: John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy. Our nation was denied their leadership at a time when the guidance of our people by their hands was needed most. The Negroes ' rightful struggle for dignity and status continued to meet with resistance during the Sixties. Nonviolence was met with violence, and as the decade developed, expressions of rage were heard and seen throughout the country. Not to be forgotten are the Beatles, who fostered a revolution in the music world, and Joan Baez, high priestess of the folk movement. The Sixties also witnessed a “hurricane of unrest as student dissension blos- somed on campuses at home and around the world. Protests of Ameri- can students were centered around Vietnam, racial discrimination, the nuclear arms race, and educational reforms, but often blurred into a broad assault on the Establishment. Demonstra- tions ranged from nonvi- olent sit-ins to forceful seizures of campus build- ings, and police confron- tation with the students became commonplace. At Columbia, the university president fell. In Mexico, the Olympics were threatened. In France the DeGaulle government tottered. In Germany, the worst riots since the rise of Hitler occurred. There were many “firsts during the Sixties, but two of the most extraordi- nary were certainly that of a man being able to look at his own heart — and the realization of a dream that put a man on the moon. Was the greatest technological achievement of our time a step forward — or civilized man ' s most profound mistake? Undoubtedly, The 70 ' s Will Also Be For In The Next Ten Years Lies Man ' s Campaign To Comfort And Conserve Our Ravaged Earth, “We have created ugliness where there was beauty. We have done gratuitous violence to other living things. Our pol- lution of the air itself is nothing less than an act of suicide. We have forgot- ten what pure water tastes like. So many rivers and lakes are thickened with ex- crement — industrial, agricultural, hu- man — that we drink a dilute chlorine solution instead. We mortgaged our good land. We went on a spree. We bought, we wasted. Now there ' s a bill to be paid. Our future is in danger. Anthony Wolff Curb The Population Explosion, SHOE REPAIR A Decade Of Tremendous Significance, Destiny. In Ten Short Years Man Must nd Learn To Love And Respect His Fellow Man, Regardless Of Race. Satisfy His Quest For Spiritual Fulfillment, About two million years ago, man appeared. He has be- come the dominant species on the Earth. All other living things, animal and plant, live by his sufferance. He is the custodian of life on Earth. It ' s a big responsibility. The thought that we ' re in competition with Russians or with Chinese is all a mistake, and trivial. Only mutual destruc- tion lies that way. We are one species, with a world to win. There ' s life all over this universe, but we are the only men. Our business is with life, not with death. Our challenge is to give what account we can of what becomes of life in the solar system, this corner of the universe that is our home and, most of all, what becomes of men — all men of all nations, colors, and creeds. It has become one world, a world for all men. It is only such a world that now can offer us life and the chance to go on. Dr. George Wald • • May I extend to each and every member of the graduating class my warmest congratulations. You have completed one phase of your formal education. It is my hope that you have done your very best in every undertaking while you were a member of the student body at Comprehensive. It is also my wish that you continue in the future to live the kind of life that will bring you a good measure of success and happiness. Remember that true success is not mea- sured by how much money you accu- mulate but rather by how much happi- ness you can achieve by doing things for others. For example, steps have been taken to modify the constitution and to form a Student-Faculty Advisory Board. This board will bring Comp students directly into the school ' s planning and operation. As it achieves this change, the Council is exper- iencing the quandary facing educational institu- tions throughout the country. Everywhere, pre- viously accepted assumptions about the school life and the student ' s place in it are being chal- lenged. This confrontation means that school administrators are more often forced to decide when to compromise and when to stand fast. The words of John Gardener, chairman of the Urban Coalition, may clarify their quandary — and their responsibility: In short, (men) must be discriminating apprais- ers of their society, knowing cooly and precisely what it is about the society that thwarts or limits them and therefore needs notification. And so they must be discriminating protectors of their institutions preserving those features that nourish and strengthen them and make them more free. The Student Council is to define the issues of student life and to provide useful ideas for sec- ondary school principals, advisors, and members of the student body as they attempt to balance change with stability. I believe these goals will gradually be achieved. The Student-Faculty Advisory Board is a committee consisting of fourteen teachers and students. The seven students are recommended by their fellow colleagues. The purpose of the board is to openly discuss the problems of the school before Mr. Stanley Ziemba, Principal, and Mr. Mitchell Kuzdzal, Vice Principal. The Student- Faculty Board is still in its premature stages. The teachers involved with the Student-Faculty Board are: Mr. Chelte, chairman, Mr. Pearson, Miss Mac Donald, Mr. Dulchinos, Mrs. Winningham, Mr. Oslinski, and Mr. Geanocopoulos. Participating students are: Ken Olbrych, chairman, Eric Batson and Michael van Dyke, co-chairmen, Patrick Tower, senior representative, Kathy Panagotopulos, junior representative, John Horack, sophomore representative, and Susan Rivest, freshman representative. 121 Sophomore Class CLASS OFFICERS: John Horack, President, Susan Shea, Secretary, Joan McCool, Treasurer, Pat Gajda, Vice President. The school year 69-70 was the first year of organiza- tion for the class of ' 72. It began with the inauguration of its officers in the early fall. Later on, the sophomore class was fortunate enough to win the interclass drama competition. As their first project during the Christmas season, they started a fund-raising campaign for Sun- shine Village, collecting $155. Sophomores also walked away with most of the ath- letic event trophies during the Winter Carnival, and subsequently won the overall trophy. Then, on March 5, they were measured for their class rings. With the coming of spring, the sophomore class has definite plans for a prosperous junior year. Advisors: Mr. Jeffery Kendra and Miss Theresa Barre HOME ROOM REPRESENTATIVES. Junior Class The seven letter word success” has become symbolic with the Class of ' 71. The initiative and drive in this group of students never seems to cease; this year, the profits from their major sales of magazines and candy soared to exceptionally high levels. Their interest in the class was displayed not only with money-making projects, but also on an extra curricular basis. A tremendous amount of time and effort was put forth by the male members of the Junior Class on the competitive teams of football, soccer, hockey, swimming, track, basketball, and baseball. All tried their hardest and succeeded to bring both enjoyment to the spectators and recognition to the school. Participation in the music field was a combined effort of boys and girls, which resulted in worthwhile enter- tainment at many fine assemblies. Clubs and scholastic teams also saw Junior participants present at their meetings. Perhaps the best way to sum up this energetic display of vibrant enthusiasm lies in the class cheer, for: No matter what is said. No matter what is done. No one can surpass the Class of ' 71! We, as Class Advisors, express our gratitude to you for being who you are and making these past years so successful and enjoyable. Your achievements have been numerous and will re- main embedded in the soul of Comprehensive forever. For you, we wish success in all your endeavors and success in making your aspirations a reality. May you find life filled with prosperity. May you enjoy good health throughout your future years, and may you dwell in blissful happiness from now to eternity. SPORTS Soccer ' 69 The Chicopee Comprehensive soccer team finished another successful season (8-3-1) by placing second in a strong Pioneer Valley League behind State Cham- pion Chicopee High School. The Colts, paced by First Team All-Western Mass., First Team All-Pioneer Val- ley co-captain Mike Breault, First Team All-Pioneer Valley co-captain Mike Jozefczyk, and Second Team All-Pioneer Valley Ron Nentwig, along with seniors Don Plouffe, Bud Therrien, Rusty Hakenson, Chris Labonte, and Ed Martel, juniors Paul Whalley, Leon Guilbeault, Mark Biela, and Mark Dubilo, sophomores George Babineau, Kevin Hundley, Skippy Martel, also gained a berth in the Western Mass. Tournament. Playing the dark horse role, the Comp soccer team conquered Holy Name of Worcester 3-1, but was trimmed by a powerful Ludlow High team in a quar- ter-final match by the score of 4-1. The 1969 Colts, who finished higher than any previous Comp team in the Pioneer Valley League, played more than half of their games with valuable personnel in- jured. Nonetheless, first year coach Mr. Davis ' team played inspired ball on their way to establishing what is hoped to be a precedent in competitive soccer teams. Coach Davis paces sidelines during Chicopee halftime. The booters, who barnstormed the league by winning their first five games, were an evenly balanced team. Defensively, the Colts depended largely on the steady play of goalie George Babineau, two-time All-Western Mass, fullback Mike Breault, and halfback Mike Jozef- czyk. Offensively, the Colts relied heavily on the efforts of halfback-shooter Leon Guilbeault, forwards Ron Nentwig, Don Plouffe, and Paul Whalley. Although the Comp soccer team has had two excep- tional back to back seasons, further success will de- pend largely on finding a suitable replacement for se- nior-standout Mike Breault. Mike, who has been play- ing super soccer for the Colts for three years, spear- headed a fine all-around defense for the team, which included a superb effort against an unbelievable Chi- copee squad. Kneeling: Ron Nentwig, Mike Jozefczyk, Chris Labonte, Buddy Therrien, Mike Breault, Don Plouffe, Ed Martel, Rusty Hakenson. Standing: Coach Billy Davis, Leon Guilbeault, Steve Mancini, Kevin Hundley, Mark Dubilo, Skippy Martel, George Babineau, Paul Whalley, Mark Biela, Billy Conroy. In the Chicopee game, the Colts stymied a dangerous Chicopee scoring attack as they held the Pacers to a scoreless first half. In the second half, however, Chico- pee forward John Coburn broke the tough defense to score what turned out to be the only score as Chicopee triumphed 1-0. Although the score may not indicate so, the Comp booters also played a superb defense in their 4-1 loss to Ludlow in the Western Mass. Tourna- ment. After taking a 1-0 lead on an excellent goal by senior Ron Nentwig, the Colts were surprised by an amazing Ludlow attack. Although the Colts will miss the services of co-captains Mike and Mike, and Ron, Don, Rusty, Buddy, Chris, and Ed, the Comp soccer team will have another fine season next year. The 1970 Davis booters will be paced by co-captains elect Paul Whalley and Leon Guilbeault. The boys were always ready to bounce back and give 100% effort, which is all one can ask. The 1969 football season started on Labor Day, Sep- tember 1. Led by coaches Leroy White, Bill Delaney and Arnold Huhtamaki, the football team readied it- self for the opening game with Cathedral, just twen- ty-six days away. The team started with sixty hopeful candidates and was soon reduced to forty members. Most of these players were sophomores and juniors, and so the team was aptly described as “green. Those twenty-six days were brutal, but by the twen- ty-seventh, the team felt it was ready. In the opening game of the season against a strong Cathedral team, the first half was dominated by the opposition as they belted to a quick 12-0 lead. The Colts then stalled the Cathedral attack in the second half, which prompted people to believe that better things were on the way. In the Colts ' second game the team was to face a very powerful Holyoke team. Most people did not give the young Colts much of a chance, but the team realized its potential. The Colts marched up and down the field, but were still on the losing end by a score of 24-16. The next week the Colts suffered a mental letdown after two heartbreaking losses and were beaten 28-8 by a good West Side team. Even though the boys lost three games, they worked hard for the Greenfield game and were rewarded by a 14-8 victory. The next week the Colts were beaten by Tech 28-18 as both teams put on a tremendous offensive show. The following game was one of the greatest ever seen in the Western Massachusetts area. This Saturday a hungry Westfield team came to Szot Park looking for a win. In the first half they virtually blew the Colts off the field as they held a commanding 22-6 lead. In the second half Comp decided to play football and scored as unbelievable 28 points in the final period to eke out a 34-28 victory. During the next two weeks of practice the Colts worked extremely hard and were confident of pulling an upset over the top-rated team in the area, Chicopee. This was never to be, however, as Chicopee proved to be too much for the team to handle and won 34-0. The Colts did come back, how- ever, to thrash Agawam with another outstanding sec- ond half effort to earn a 24-16 victory. Next year ' s Colts will miss the outside marksmanship of Klofas, Tanguay, and Breault, but have championship potential due to a strong, experienced front line consisting of Paul Jasinski, John Zieja, Ferman Jamison, Addison Becton, and Don Ford, the last two coming up from the J.V. ' s. Backcourt hopefuls will be Ray Tadeo, Mark Biela, and Kevin Hundley, also up from Mr. Davis ' fine J.V. squad. Hockey League. Even though the Colt skaters finished above .500 in the league standings, they finished only fifth out of seven teams, as the front runner of the league finished well above the rest of the league. Led by Coaches Alfred Pinciak and Leslie Dinsbach, the Colts overcame a slow start to end up with a respect- able record in a tough league. The Pucksters, who depended largely on the outstanding perfor- mances of Senior M.V.P. Captain Ron Nentwig, were, however, denied a berth in the Western Mass. Tournament. Ron, who during the season became the first Comp hockey player to gain the Player of the Week Award, led the Colts to many gruelling victories. Also aiding in the overall performance of the team was senior co-captain goal-tender Mike Jozefczyk. Mike, whose goals against average per game was a shade under three, was called on to make some twenty-five saves each game enroute to a fine season. Senior co-captain Dan O ' Neil turned in a good season, although being shifted from wing to defense. Because the Colts played with only three seniors, their future looks bright. Juniors Ron Bernash (the most improved player on the team), Jean-Guy Aube (the team ' s leading scorer), and Bob Demers and freshman sensation Scott McChesney form the nucleus of next year ' s team. A combination of team spirit and continuous hustle could make the 1970-1971 Colts a serious threat to their opponents. Swimming ' 70 This year the Comp Varsity Swimming team, led by co-captains John Mazurowski and Ed Klofas, finished seventh out of eighteen teams in Western Massachusetts. Though plagued by a lack of depth, the team did possess many individual strengths. Of the sixteen swimmers on the team, eight placed highly at the Western Mass. Championships held at Holyoke High. The first relay, consisting of Rick Doucette, Dave Hebert, Ed Soar, and Mark Goebel, put in a fine performance, taking third place. Co-captain Ed Klo- fas placed ninth in the 200 yard Individual Medley and later took a sixth in the 100 yard backstroke. John Mazurowski, who during the season smashed the existing pool and school record (173.56 pts.), setting the new record at 198.10 pts., took a strong second in the diving competition. Swimming the Off the blocks! Freestyle 100 yard butterfly, Pete Czajkowski placed twelfth. Comp ' s breaststroke aces, Wayne Deloria, who is only a sophomore, and Dave Hebert took an impressive third and tenth, respectively. Larry Davis placed twelfth in the four hundred yard freestyle. Finally, Ed Soar, Rick Doucette, Mark Goebel, and Pete Czajkowski teamed up for a strong sixth place in the final event, the 400 yard freestyle relay. Next year ' s team will feel the hard losses of seniors John Mazurowski, Ed Klofas, Pete Czajkowski, and Dave Hebert. Scoring over a hundred points for the Colts this year, John Mazurowski will be hard to replace. Besides his exceptional diving, he swam the 100 yard butterfly this year. Comp ' s other co-captain, Ed Klofas, who also scored over a hundred points, swam everything from the relays to the 400 yard freestyle in his four years. Pete Czajkowski, the team ' s butterfly and freestyle specialist, and the breaststroke ace, Dave Hebert, have also won their last races for the Colts. Back to help the team ' s outstanding coaches, Mr. Kijak and Mr. Goulet, fill the gaps next year will be several fine juniors. Ed Soar, the sprinter of the team, scored the third highest point total this year. Rick Doucette will probably swim the backstroke and replace Johnny on the board. Mike Grey will be back to swim the fifty and hundred freestyle. Not to be overlooked are the sophomores. Breaststroker Wayne Deloria, one of the best in the state, dis- tance men Larry Davis, Bob Piela, and Pat Murphy, freestyler Joel Monahan, and sprinter Mark Goebel will all be swimming for Comp next year. With a little more depth next year, and some help in key areas, the Colt Mermen might have a very successful season next winter. In doing so she also set another precedent, that of being the only woman coach for an all male varsity team. In some sports practice is drudgery, but for the ski team the theme of the season was fun. Whether jogging along Grattan Street, doing calisthenics in the hallways, or running a course at Mt. Tom, the team had a good time. This is not to say that the season was all one big party . . . just most of it! The team discovered what work was involved when it had its first practice at Mt. Tom. The boys were not given lift privileges but had to climb up the course. Although Miss Burgess did a fine job of han- dling transportation, organizing, schedulizing, and giv- ing locker room pep talks, she lacked racing experi- ence. To make up for this she solicited the aid of her brother Mike and Tom Kennedy to teach the team ho w to ski slalom. Both were the top skiers on the Holyoke team that took the Western Mass. Champion- ship in ' 68 and ' 69. The greenness of the team was evident when the boys finished last by a full nine seconds in their first meet. But Kathy ' s Raiders were not to be put down and so came back in their next meet to beat Catholic. Hopeful of a good finish to the season, the team was disap- pointed when poor conditions and bad weather forced cancellation of the remainder of the season. Of the eleven team members, only three seniors, cap- tain Don Plouffe, Ken McKenzie, and Jay Goebel, will be lost. Sophomores Dave Desmaris and Kevin O ' Connor can be expected to lead the team again next year when the team will be officially in the Western Mass. Ski League. The season starts in spring with tryouts when many underclassmen vie for the few open spots on the squads. During the summer, practices are held every week to prepare the girls for the long season ahead. With the start of school, the cheer- leaders are ready for the soccer and football seasons. The cheerleaders are present at every varsity football game and frequently at home soc- cer games. In December they start to concentrate on their competition routine while at the same time supporting our basketball players every Tuesday and Friday. Competition is certainly one of the highlights of the year for these girls. They are one of the area ' s top squads due to their impressive routines and fine performances. Leaving the squad this year are captain Carol Bakos and co-captain Sue Boronski, and seniors Barbara Downs, Pat Hutcheson, Barbara Morrow, Carolyn Mossey, and Donna Butova.
