I! I KL WJJWl ' VVt materially in his rising; but, doubt not, it was of the last importance only to be present at it. H. D. Thoreau ■ iHsmww Every man casts a shadow; not his body only, but his imperfectly mingled spirit . . . It is widest at its base, which is no greater than his own capacity. H. D. Thoreau Chicopee Comprehensive High School, Chicopee, Massachusetts Contents Op ening 6 Seniors 30 Class Ballot 70 Class History 76 Underclassmen 82 Business and Vocational 96 Faculty 106 Activities 132 Sports 152 Advertising 186 In today’s ever changing world of big business, computer technology, and involved social life, the emphasis in teaching has been turned away from the teacher and has become more concentrated upon the subject matter. It is therefore refreshing in today’s society to find an individual whose personal commitment to her beliefs lies so strongly behind the student that she may dedicate herself entirely to the education of growing minds. It is in this admiration of personal commitment of belief in the student that we dedicate Memini ’69 to a teacher who has dedicated her entire life to the young . . . Miss Lillian J. Moggio. WWi S M fc • This is my work; my blessing , not my doom; Of all who live, I am the one by whom this work can best be done in the right way. Henry Van Dyke itfmi m s WNR Il lgi Blfilll mmmwzi M§M 1g§ite§ mf i j i ' :£s ;. i.-y r MS ' : X’ Ssi -V -V .- ' £ i w that creature who is constantly in search of himself Ernst Cassirer V M ■00 E ' tli ! illtUi 0 mi 4 The youth gets together his materials to build a bridge to the moon, or, perchance a palace or temple on earth, and, at length, the middle-aged man concludes to build a woodshed with them . H. D. Thoreau Do you remember when I was young? Peppermint spankings and freckled fibs I remember you. Oh, and surely you don ’t forget my marshmellow mud-pie and a licorice- striped sky ( which wasn ' t either day or night.) I haven ' t forgotten. And recall the naive harlequin fancies Cellophane rain, which when it came, it came everywhere. And if I closed my eyes no one could see me. As I now recall, they weren ' t so naive after all. And sometimes you would show me crocheted vines, quilted clouds and whipped cream snow. Even then I knew you would have to go. Now my opaque eyes are closed. It ' s different. Instead of you not seeing me, it is you I don ' t see. Revealing age has taught me to see blindly, And ironically I am its rag-doll, it plays with me And youth is just a memory. I even hate now. Patti Isaacs Class of ’69 This is the state of man: today he puts forth The tender leaves of hopes; tomorrow blossoms, And bears his blushing honours thick upon him: The third day comes a frost, a killing frost, And, when he thinks, good easy man, full surely His greatness is a-ripening, nips his root, And then he falls, as I do. William Shakespeare 17 Anastasia Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more. William Shakespeare The surface of the earth is soft and impressible by the feet of men; and so with the paths which the mind travels. H. D. Remember how we laughed away the hours And think of all the great things we would do? Those were the days mv friends. We thought they’d never end. We ' d sing and dance for ever and a day. We ' d live the life we choose. We ' d fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. Then the busy years went rushing by us. We lost our starry notions on the way. If by chance I ' d see you in the tavern, We’d smile at one another and we’d say . . . Those were the days my friends. We thought they’d never end. We’d sing and dance for ever and a day. We’d live the life we choose. We’d fight and never lose. Those were the days. Oh yes, those were the days. Just tonight I stood before the tavern. Nothing seemed the way it used to be. In the glass I saw a strange reflection. Was that lonely person really me? Through the doors there came familiar laughter. I saw your face and heard you call my name. Oh my friends we’re older but no wiser, For in our hearts the dreams are still the same. Those were the days my friends. We thought they’d never end. We’d sing and dance for ever and a day. We’d live the life we choose. We’d fight and never lose. Those were the days. JUNIORS Rachael Carrier . . . Secretary Jay Goebel . . . Treasurer Bob Chartier . . . Vice-President John Butova . . . President Bv the time teenagers arrive at their junior year in high school, they finally begin to see what participation can do for a school activity. The Class of 70 has young people who understand what school spirit is and are adult enough to put some effort into making it a reality. You ' ll find them placed somewhere in full spectrum of school activities. For instance, think of the well-toned junior class athletes who’ve contributed to Comprehensive’s encouraging success with the varsity basketball and swim teams. Also consider our boys’ efforts on the football, soccer, and hockey teams. There are a good number of junior fellows in on the action and some outstanding contributors who’ve devoted effort and faithful practice. There are also a noticeably large representation of junior girl athletes on the cheerleading squad. They’ve also put effort into numerous practice sessions, which enable them to accomplish those impressive flips and splits seen at our athletic meets. In conclusion, both junior girls and boys participating in Comp’s sports really work! Seated: Lvnette Demers, Maureen McDowell, Nadine Gorman, Nancv Nilsen, Karen Ladeau, Barb Lavine, Mr. Martel. Besides in sports activities, Comp’s juniors also participate in its musical outlet. Perhaps not so well appreciated as our athletes, these musicians strive equally as much and some have proven to be exceptional enough to have made All District Band, Chorus, and Orchestra. In addition, many of the G and F Clefs, Marching Band, and Symphonic Band are juniors who have really strived to heighten the school’s musical status. There are several other clubs and organizations to which 11th graders belong. For example, thev are in the Art, Spanish, French, Latin and Cinema clubs; they constitute a large number in the Drama and Ski clubs; they are active members of the student council. Future Teachers, and other clubs. Also, the class officers, seen quite regularlv at school functions along with many other enthusiastic 3rd year “Comper’s”, should be praised for their contributions to the great spirit. In essence, the Class of ’70 does have members who have grown up enough to realize that Comp is not just a playground. SOPHOMORES During the year, one class shone above the others. The Class of 1971 dominated the scene here at Comp. It all started in the early fall, when we organized the sophomore class, a first in the history of our school. For our newly elected officers we held the first formal installation in Comp’s history. This led the way for the other classes to declare that they, too, would make such an installation an annual event. When Christmas time came about, once again we pointed the wav for the others when we led through the entire canned food drive, only to come in second by 96 cans. All toll we collected 4000 cans, about a third of the record total of 14,000. Our class has also done exceptionally well in other areas. Sophomores can be found in practically every sport, and members of our class lead the debating and chess teams. Many clubs have sophomore presidents and the sophomores sphere of influence is growing steadily. It is obvious that we have a bright future ahead of us under the leadership of Mr. Mrs. Rivest. Some have been so bold as to suggest that we will become the best class to ever roam the halls of Chicopee Comp. Kathv Moran . . . Treasurer Joan Frankiewicz . . . Secretary Debbie Smith . . . FRESHMEN Rushing through the corridors of Chicopee Comprehensive High School trying to find the right homeroom was quite a problem for some students, namely, the Freshmen, the Class of ’72. Meanwhile large groups formed with an air of superiority those being the “mighty Seniors, Juniors and Sophomores.” The one thing in common was an ineffable feeling of excited nervousness penetrating the entire student body. This was the long-awaited day when we — the freshmen would at last become students of Chicopee Comp. The first few weeks were quite confusing with new teachers, new books, and new firends. Within a short time, however, we had adjusted to these difficulties and are now accepted members of the student body and are looking forward to an exciting year. Soon after we had adjusted to High School life, elections for Student Council Freshmen Representatives were held. Among the many freshmen homeroom representatives, Gayle La Roque and Gail Williamson were elected to the Executive Board. It was a new experience for the representatives to join in the fun at the workshop in October. Many joined the band, the drama club and other organizations. The Freshmen football and basketball teams both have hopes of becoming one of the greatest Varsity teams Comp has ever had. We all are looking forward to when the Class of 72 again joins C.C.H.S., not as lowly Freshmen, but as spirited Sophomores. 93 As a field , however fertile , cannot be fruitful without cultivation neither can a mind without learning. Along with this transition come added responsibilities, new decisions, new goals, new attitudes, and new thresholds to cross. Success in life and work is a matter not so much of Talent as of Concentration and Perseverance. All of you must continue to be aware of new knowledge in world happenings in order to preserve the society which we as Americans cherish. As High School graduates, you now face many decisions. Presiding over both groups were officers elected by the entire student body. This system was originated in order to provide a better means of communication between the student body and the Council. Among the traditional activities sponsored by the Student Council were the Get-Acquainted Dance, the election of the Football Queen and her Court, the Christmas Canned Food Drive, and fund-raising for various charities. However, the Student Council did not tie itself to tradition. In fact, several new activities were sponsored, the first being a workshop held at Camp Woronoco for all Council members. The Student Council established Pride Week which consisted in Pride in Country, Pride in Dress, Pride in Activities, Pride in Class, and Pride in School. Also held for the first time was the Winter Carnival consisting of two days of various activities which was concluded by a folk concert. This year a long-held dream became a reality when the school store was established. As always, the Student Council concluded the busy year by awarding a scholarship to a deserving Senior. Although this is only the second year that the Photography Club has been an organized club, it is rapidly advancing to become one of the best clubs at Comp. Fortu- nate to have several Seniors who are experienced in photography to guide them, the Photography Club meets once a week to discuss the latest photographic techniques and to develop and print pictures the members have taken. Under the direction of Mr. Fleury, an expert photographer himself, the club hopes to enrich students’ understanding and appreciation of photography, and to advance the position of photography at Comp. 150 Now Club The “Now” Club hopes to achieve a rapport between the cultural world and the high school student of today. Since most of the classical studies are concerned with the past culture, the “Now” Club serves a meaningful purpose in the interpretation of the “now” world of art, music, and literature. Thus, hopefully, this club will give a student a better insight into the present as a creative world in which he can function in a significant, productive manner.
