FITZPATRICK, Sifpfwfffrnflffref of Schools To the Class of 1954: In offering you my congratulations and hest wishes for your success and happiness in your udliustrnent to the present and futurm- civilization, I will modify them with the thought that love for your neighbor in your every thought, word, and deed will be the hzisis upon which your peace, happiness, and sec-urity will he huilt und maintained. Sincerely yours. 6 gfftglf V ' t 'X y f To the Class of 1954: It is fashionable for those who speak and write to graduating classes in this period of history to be pessimistic, to say that the older generations have not been able to prepare for you a world full of peace and hope, that young graduates are stepping into a gloomy future which they must make better than the present or the past. To this philosophy I cannot sub- scribe. You have inherited a system of government and a way of living which far surpass any other known to history. You have been able to choose your own courses of action and to prepare your- selves as you wished-and these are the works of free men and women. There is neither cause nor need for pessimism, nor will there be so long as freedom lasts. Go forward, then, with optimism add hope, with determination to make the best possible use of the freedom which you have received from other generations, the freedom which you must pre- serve and pass on to generations yet to come. X .7 if If , ff ' f U Mjury I fl! To the Class of 1954: Please accept my deep and sincere congratu- lations on your graduation from Iligh School, and my earnest hope that you will all realize that this event marks not the completion but the commencement oi' your life's career. Continue your education as far as you possibly can-as long as you live-by evening or correspondence courses, if no other way is available to you. You will then have something which can never be lostg which no one can ever take from you. Although I am writing these words in the December months, before your Year Book is actually printed, I feel perfectly safe fbasing my feeling of security on past experience-J in offering congratulations to the Year Book Staff fora job which I know will be well done. I have a copy of each Year Book published since 1942, when the first one was issued, and without exceptions these books have been a credit to Chicopee High School. I extend to each member of this year's class my sincere wishes for many years of health, happiness, success and service to the community. 61.64. ci 1,49 To the Class of 1954: For many of you formal education will termi- nate upon receiving a diploma. For others it will serve as ground work for advanced train- ing and study. The habits and interests which have been developed by you during the past four years under the guidance of your teachers are yours to enjoy. Good books not only develop the mind but stimulate interest and through interest the knowledge and enjoyment of life are revealed. Take advantage of this single fact as you take your place in an ever-changing society. An open book is the gateway to successg a closed book, a barrier to the avenues of enjoyment and knowledge. Q Wide? To the Class of 1954: XVith all sincerity may I congratulate the Class of 1954-a class outstanding for its en- thusiasm, co-operation, and good judgment. May you continue to exercise these qualities. As you continue to advance toward your goal in life-whether it be in homemaking, in a trade, in business, or in a profession-you will be required to make many decisions. 'Weigh each situation carefully. Listen to the advice of others who have had more experience than you, but let yourself be guided by your own thinking. Maintain the respect of others and, above all, your own self-respect by constantly proving your ability to distinguish between right and wrong. at J 714 cu! lb' fe ig H nga MARION G. Chicopee kicked off to Drury. After failing to get a first down. Drury punted to Fhieopee. On the first scrimmage play Fred Zabik went to lJrury's 10. On the next play Zabik went over for the first score, and the extra point. In the third period Chicopee climaxed a 54 yard dash by sending Picard across the goal for the score. The fourth quarter a Drury punt was blocked by Matys and from there Zabik took the ball over and also made the extra point for the final score of the day. C'IlIC'OI lClC 7, GHICENFIELIJ 7 Chic-opee and Greenfield battled to a 7-7 tie at Memorial Field before 2,500 fans. Zabik scored the TD and made the extra point in the first quarter. Greenfield came back in the second quarter with Bubba Hayes scoring the TID and .Jackie Peters the extra point. The rest of the game was a deadlock of fumbles by both teams. CIIICTOPEE 351, CATHEDRAL 7 An inspired Fhieopee eleven wanting revenge for the beating given to the 1951 team. swamped Cathedral 21-1-7. Top scorer of the day was Zabik with 2 TlJ's and one extra point. Mefflelland was runner-up with 1 Tl? and I3 extra points. Nelligan and Skypeck followed. The most exciting play ofthe game was when Skypeck intercepted a Fathe- dral pass and went all the way for a 60 yard dash TD. Excellent blocking by Lopuk, Matys, Kumiega. Ilenault and Olbrych. CHICOPICIG 27, NVESTFIELIJ 0 Zabik led the Fhieopee team to the one-sided victory by breaking VVestfield's spirit on the first play by running the ball 65 yards to West- field's 15. Picard and Skypeck also played excellent ball. Henaulf and Kagan provided some beautiful pass catching. Terrific line, of- fense and defense. VHICOPICIC -lfl. XVICST SPRINGFIELD 0 Chieopee keyed up over the controversy of last year's game. in which a Tl! was called bark, provided enough spark to run over a big- ger West Springfield team. The entire baekfield played terrific' ball. No outstanding player. The line was firm. holding bark powerfnls like Al Klein and f'hub llollandini. 99 I 'lik-.lam Z5 CIIICQPEE 47. CLASSICAL 7 Undefeated Fhicopee High romped over Classical High with a score of -17-T. The grame was completely one-sided. Zabik scored 4 TlJ's. Sky- peck tossed 2 Tl? passes, a 21 yards to Chubby Henault and a 15 yards to Dave Flynn. The only play the visitors had to Cheer was a U0 yards kickonn return which llick Fisk ran for a TD. The Chicopee line played excellent defense and offense. CHICOPEE 34, AG.-UV.-XM G Chicopee's undefeated eleven against Agawanfs undefeated eleven was all that could be heard for two weeks before the game. The question before the game of the year was which of the undefeated teams would fall. Chicopee, anxious for victory, defeated a good Agawam eleven 3-1-6. The players will tell you that this game was won on the nrst few plays of the game, when the Fhicopee boys really drove the Agawam line back to set up the TlJ's. In this game the Fhicopee line was the deciding factor therefore, the lin'-men should receive due crdit. Adam Lopuk, Gundi Matys, Chubby llenault, and Pete Ku' ' ,ga really hit Agawam's backs and made them wish they did not have to carry the ball on a play. After a slow start. the PACESETTERS, under the able guidance of Coach Hoge, fought their way into the winning column. Because of its fighting spirit, Chicopee proved to be a constant threat to powerful opponents and was never outclassed in its games. Chicopee lost their nrst game to Agawam but came back with two straight wins. They then started in on a winning streak which put them in a tie with Greenfield for first place of the Valley League. However, they lost their second game with an aggressive Greenfield team. After this game they ended up in second place in the Valley League, where they remained until the end of the season. The basketball team of 54 was invited to the Assumption Tournament where they were pitted against St. Stephens of lVorcester. The PACESETTERS put on an excellent display of playing but St. Stephens with their basketball skill were able to defeat Chicopee's great five. V Mx 102 BASKETBALL SCORES Agawam ........... ...... XVe students nl' t'l1it'opee High are proud of the team which has always played a never-die game right to the final seconds ol' play. lO3 Since the yearbook went to press before the baseball season started it was impossible to get the scores of any of the games. However, the lineup and schedule were obtained and are as accurate as possible. Probable 54 Lineup Pete Kumiega-Pete played in the outfield last year, but with the loss of Chris Mathieson he looks like the number 1 backstop for 54 . Richie O'Brien-Richie will have to fill Joe Urdzela's shoes at first but despite his lack of height he looks like the answer to Coach Moge's first base problems. Paul Pirog-a one-year veteran, Paul has two more years to play around the keystone sack. Richie Kagan-Richie looks like the brightest prospect to fill in at the hot corner for Dave Flynn. Tommy Skypeck-The only sure starter in the outfield, Tom will have to split his chores between the mound and the outfield. Leon Neidleman- The Judge, as he has been nicknamed, played left field last year and looks like a sure repeater for that position. Bob Niemiec-As a freshman last year, Bob had a clean slate with no victories or defeats but he was used only in relief. This year he will take his regular turn on the mound. Phil Yacovone-Phil had a 5-2 record last year, which might have been better if he hadn't had such a poor start. He will definitely be called on to take a better than average share of the mound duties this year. Don Rusin-Don has had no previous varsity experience but in 53 he played with the Fairview Legion. His experience makes him a number one candidate for that spot in the infield. Baseball Schedule April 21 Palmer May 13 Holyoke 23 Hol. Cath. fAwayJ 17 Turn.
