' — 5 iS’ -r: t..4; CHICOAN I Foreword To the growing students of a growing high school, the Senior Class presents the 1966 CHICOAN. Our school years are stages of growth and transition. The direction and form in which the individual grows greatly depends upon his high school. Through athletic, scholastic, and social activities, Chico d High is dedi- cated to developing the individual. Ever since enrollment in Chicod School we, as students, have been constantly developing. We have experienced growth in body, knowledge, character, responsibility, and wisdom. As we have grown so has our school. This year Chicod has not only enlarged its enrollment, faculty, and classroom facili- ties; but by this physical expansion our school has increased in its importance to its students and the surrounding com- munity. She is a rare individual, who not only dedicates herself to the teach- ing profession, but to her students as well. She encourages us to develope our talents and abilities to the fullest extent. Student prob- lems always receive her eager attention and prompt advice. Often, her lunch periods and recesses are devoted to make-up work. In ad- dition, as Advisor to the Annual Staff, she diligently dedicates her abilities to the pub- lication of our yearbook. With her determin- ation to use the time and knowledge God has given her for the benefit of others, it is not unusual to see her scurrying down the halls, busily conducting student-teacher conferences, or vigorously working at her desk. We, the Senior Class of Chicod High School, wish to express our sincere gratitude and respect for her unselfish devotion and leadership. In appreciation for the years she has spent in our service, we affectionately dedicate the 1966 issue of the CHICOAN to MRS. BARBARA SWAIN. ADMINISTRATION The chief administrator of any school must involve him- self in all school activities and functions. Some of his many duties are the supervision of the lunchroom, the publication of a weekly bulletin, routing the buses, advising the athletic de- partment, conducting coi ferences, completing reports, and see- ing to she maintenance of school property and equipment. 5 MR. ARTHURS. ALFORD We wish to salute Mr. Alford, the Superintendent of Pitt County Schools, for his unselfish devotion to the youth of our community. He is recognized by all as a man of great ability and foresight, who has done much to improve the educational system of Pitt County. THOMAS L. CRAFT Mr. Craft has served our school well in his capacity as Assistant Superintendent. In this position he has worked endlessly to further the educational develop- ment of Pitt County. WILLIAM J. EDWARDS, JR. Our school is very proud to have participated in the educational career of Mr. Edwards, a former teacher, who now serves our county in the capacity of Assistant Superintendent. 1 !!! ,! Officers We wish to congratulate our Parent Teachers Association for achieving standard P. T. A. accreditation: This organization has worked diligently to raise money for our school by sponsoring the Alumni Basketball games and Womanless Weddings. Appropri- ations have been made through the years for a cyclorama, a card catalog, lunchroom equipment, and other items beneficial to our school. In addition, the P. T. A. annually aids the Monogram Club in purchasing award sweaters and helps defray the expenses of teacher delegates to the N. C. E. A, State Conventions . For all the efforts the Chicod P. T. A. exerts to increase the facilities and educational standards of our school, we offer our gratitude and sincere thanks . Vice President: Travis Smith Secretary: Mrs. George Boyd Our principal, Mr. Kelly Wallace, through strenuous effort and work has greatly contributed to the growth of our school. As we look around us we see signs of skill and ability as a leader, teacher, and friend. Because of his loyalty, devotion, and responsible leadership to Chicod School, we, the students would like to express our appreciation for a job well done. High School Faculty MRS. I ii Monitors It is the job of each bus moni- tor to keep order on the bus at all times. Sometimes this can be quite a job. Our monitors are: Lillian Chapman, Carolyn Perkins, Dorothy Chapman, Velma Mills, Frances Fornes, Linda Brock, Steve Peele, Ralph Haddock, Janice Campbell, Ronnie Hardee, Nancy Wethering- ton, Dalton Moseley, Carlos Can- non, Norman Cashion, Jerry Wall, Ronnie Foster, Jimmy Galloway, Randy Dixon, Coy Buck, Albert Paramore, Judy Jones, Virgina and Elaine Mills Life at Chicod is not entirely composed of studies and extracurricular activities; there are certain intangible ingredients that only a Chicoan could define. The hurry- scurry to the candy store at recess, the horror of seeing books fly everywhere as one walks down the stairs, the bursting of school spirit at ball games, the hushed rever- ence during the singing of the Alma Mater--all these small occurrences are mixed in a student’s mind with the more significant events into a maze of happenings we call school life. In one hectic whirl, 1965- 66 passed before Chicoans and was gone almost before they realized it. Although the events are now past history, they will becbme an integral part of the memories of Chicod High School. 57 i Thanks to Mrs. Wilson, our school secretary, the office workers are an asset to the smooth functioning process of our school. He is willing to learn and must be educated physically and mentally if he is to grow into a well balanced teen-ager and adult. The all important basic educational W foundation is competently laid by his teachers. The enrollment of the elementary school has increased to the point of almost making history this year. There are T7 additional stu- dents, which has resulted in 3_ more teachers, three additional classes, and four more classrooms. Such growth has improved the efficiency of the elementary school program by allowing it to benefit from the school’s full time librarian, who divides her time between the elementary and the high school libraries. The library scene above is indicative of the library period sharing the spotlight with music class as two of the elementary student’s most popular classes. 91 Ronald Adams Louis Branch Don Briley Jay Brown Joe Brunson Debra Buck Lora Faye Buck Randy Buck Mike Cannon Lossie Chapman Sue Edwards Marietta Elks Billy Evans Lossie Fleming Deborah Forrest Joyce Gurkins Cheryl Landreth Larry Manning 92 All eyes toward Bobby as he teaches a little!
