After the rules and guidelines were addressed on the first day of class, l2 seniors remained. As yearbook staff members, our job was to record the events, actions, and reactions of the year. We have triedgtopcapture the '87-88 school year in a positive and different way. Weidecided to change the traditional layout of the yearbook and now it will be up to you to decide if our approach was a SUCCCSS. The school year really began for many of the students before registration. It beganjffor the cheerleaders in June when they attended camp, and for the football and volleyball teams when they began pre- season workoutsQ An organized registration for high school students was initiated by the new high school principal, Mr. Randy Cobb and our new counselor, Mrs.. Linda Lynch. Even though there were some changes that had to be made, the '87-88 school year began with ease. CHEERLEADERS posed with Chico's new Dragon Mascot, Tammy Buckner. Tammy, a senior this year, was chosen by the entire student body to represent Chico as the mascot. 4 STUDENT BODY seemed very attentive to the activities of this pep rally. Pep schedule was changed to 2:45 this year instead of 2:30. if One highlight of the '87-88 pep rallies was the pie-eating contest the coaches voluntarily entered. Coach Wilson and Coach Langthorn, new to the district, really proved to be big eaters. We had always known Coach Greever and Coach May had big appetites! Students in all odd grades must take this assessment instrument. Students at the Exit Level CGrade 111 who fail to demonstrate mastery of mathematics and English language arts, will not be eligible to receive their diplomas upon completion of their senior year. They are given three additional chances to pass if they are unsuccessful the first time. Knowing this, the juniors marched into the library like soldiers. Each student had their own opinion of this instrument, but only facial expressions and groans were seen and heard. Mrs. Linda Lynch, Chico I.S.D. Counselor, conducted the test and watched as the anxious juniors began this very important task. In August, 1981, Mrs. Lynch began working at Chico through the auspices of the Education Service Center, Region XI, in Fort Worth. She also worked for the other small schools in Wise County CAlvord, Slidell, Paradise, and Boydj. Gradually, she reduced the number of schools to one. 1 She began working at Chico on a full time basis in August, 1987. Her duties include administrative assistant, counselor, teacher ap- praiser, curriculum director and accreditation specialist. Mrs. Lynch stated her main goal was to help the juniors and seniors to prepare for graduation, college, and the world of workf' Kathy Redwine didn't seem to be enjoying herself. Russell Hornsbyis face illustrated con- cern of most juniors. Casey Hamner looked a bit stunned. 4 w-a,,,,Ww Robby Tate, new to Chico this year, seemed very re- laxed before he began his tCSt. Ricky Connally's feelings about the TEAMS test were quite clear in this photo. Juniors were given a break between parts of the test. Burette Douglas and Mi- chelle Weger enjoyed that part of the test. Eric Monett witnessed mass confusion on the part of Tami Clarkson and Kerisia Hilburn before testing re- sumed. I yf , ,,,, 4 xt, W... .,,.. .M -M ...r L. - ,V-.. Y -- --- ' ' ' - -f ' ...F .COME THING FOP EVER YOIVE Music, pep rallies, float building - almost any activity that interests you is available for students at Chico. Young people today can decide to participate or remain in their own world. Choices are becoming a part of the curriculum and there is usually something for everyone. The old saying, variety is the spice of lifen certainly fits the routine today. Not only do students have a wide range of choices, but they have to make the right ones. These decisions start at a very early age! T T ma, -W i ,,,,.............l,...... -..--.f.. - f.....,.-- - -., ---Y., Mr. McVey is trying very hard to build a strong music program for Chico and the students really enjoy his teaching. 6 These elementary and junior high students are showing their support at the weekly pep rallies. They are given several opportunities to show their support for the junior high and high school football teams. The sixth graders are given a choice between art and band. Under the guidance of Mr. Olsen, art students are adding their touches to the homecoming float the class entered this year. By the way, it was a very good float! Mrs. Cammy Terrell, Kindergarten teacher, helps Crystal Clifton with her alphabet. Crystal seems a little nervous as Mrs. Terrell evaluates her responses. These kindergarten students are waiting for the signal to start coloring. Either that or they don't want anyone to see their crayons! Fire Prevention Week was educational for these students, Tiffany Hand and Scott Rackley. Mr. Bobby Richey and Mr. Bill Brooks demonstrated the proper techniques in using fire extinguishers. Many students like William Shipp Stephen What ley and David Green preferred to brown bag it rather than stand in line at the cafeteria during lunch 8 et Junior Tami Clarkson, like many other stu- dents, finds time to laugh and enjoy the free time during morning break . .- You get a good view of what's happening in the hall if you sit on the steps in front of the gym. All over the grounds, students find different ways of enjoying their free time. Willie Wilson takes a stroll around cam- pus to get a little exercise after sitting all morning. Valentin Rios seems a little annoyed that he has to go in, but break doesn't last all day. During bad weather, students take their break in the cafeteria and enjoy cokes and chips. 9 BLACK CA 7' BEING! GOOD LUCK Homecoming came on September 19 which did not give the classes a lot of time to prepare for building the traditional floats. Each class met the second week of school and decided where to build. materials they would need, and times they would meet to build their floats. The Ex-Students Association decides the theme each year and this year it was cartoon charac- ters. Seniors have first choice and each class follows as to classification. The freshmen chose last but they came in first. Contrary to superstitions, a big black cat brought the 9th graders very good luck. Felix the Cat won first place. The freshmen started their first year in high school with a first-prize float and were very proud of their work. The judges liked the big black cat as well as the parade spectators. Fat Albert was the sophomorels choice of cartoon characters and Brent Miller portrayed him on the float. Hey Y Hey - Hey the sophomores walked away with second place. 10 Bugs Bunny rode atop the junior class float. Burette Douglas put lots of hard work into this silly rabbit and the juniors were very proud of it. Bugs came in fourth. The art classes participated in build- ing a float for the first time this year. Mr. Olsen's classes prepared a very competitive entry. Everyone will have to look out for them in the fu- ture. Snoopy was the senior's entry and their float won 3rd place. 'IT WWW M0305 HOMECOMING NEW OMER Chico I.S.D. has a mascot and the cheerleaders worked very hard to collect enough money to buy the mascot uniform. The money was donated by the community merchants and the mascot has be- come a real spirit booster. The mascot even helped raise money by posing with kids who wanted to have their picture made with a Dragon! Not only is this new addition a spirit booster, but Chico students can proudly present their mascot at all sports activities and let people know we are the Dragons. The person elected to wear the mascot uniform has a lot to do with the spirit it raises and this year Miss Tammy Buckner was awarded this honor by the entire student body. Even a Dragon can wear a mum at homecoming! If you don't think it's hard to sit in the crowded band section, play an instrument and at the same time keep your mum on straight, just ask Leah Hughes. WWMWM gagmg runnin Sunglasses, convertible, arm- bands! Are these guys coaches or members of the Mafia? A nice ending was added to the parade this year by a group of actors from Bridgeport. They are called the Hole In The Wall Gang. The C.H.S. student body voted on September 18 for one of the four candidates pictured here. Leah Hughes represented the 9th grade classg Judy Anderson was the senior candidateg Lisa Buckner was chosen by her sophomore peers, and Teresa Moss was the junior class nominee. 13 A MA 615 MOMENT TEPES4 MO!! CPOWNED E They all stood silently on the field. Each candidate was awaiting the announcement of the 1987 homecoming queen. Under the long dresses, you could not see their knees shaking - but they were. The short time you have to wait until the name of the queen is announced seems like a lifetime. Finally the winner is announced but there are no tears of sadness because it is quite an honor to be nominated by your class and to represent them on the field in front of usually the largest crowd at any home game. It really is a magic moment for the queen and the candidates. The queen is decided by popular vote. Each class chooses one candidate and the four are then voted on by the entire high school student body. This year Miss Teresa Moss, Junior, was crowned homecoming queen. Teresa is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Moss and is a very active student. She participates in all sports, is a cheerleader and an honor student. The class of 1946 was honored this year and Mrs. Mary Jane Ra- mos was coming home queen and Mr. Bill Manning was king. Senior nominee and accident vic- tim was Miss Judy Anderson es- corted by Mr. Rick Morales. Judy had to hobble on the field because of a broken ankle. Miss Lisa Buckner, soph- omore nominee, was es- corted by Mr. Todd Low. Escorted by Mr. Trent Teague is freshman can- didate, Miss Leah Hughes. qv . . gmsraqiargf.-Quan-my .w.mwr A 'M K Teresa Moss beams after being crowned homecoming queen. Talented, hard-working, studious and loyal are just a few adjectives which describe this junior class. You can find most of these students participating in all of the various activities offered to Chico High School students. They are leading the way and doing a great job! When the weather is pretty, you can always find this group of juniors on the front steps of the high school. The one with the pretty legs is Robbie Ryan. Robbie won first runner up at the Fun Dango beauty contest. Junior class president, Tere- sa Moss, introduces home- coming float ideas as Mrs. Powers looks on. Ordering senior rings is the magic moment for most juniors. 52 1 i Ii 5 E ,, 2 2 it E - A , X 1 f MMWM M, .. . It finally sinks in that they will not be participating as students in any future pep rallies, and tears begin to fall. Melany Burgess, Senior Class Presi- dent, read a poem to the student body at the last pep rally and the remaining seniors gathered around her. It was their way of saying good- bye and letting everyone know they are going to try and make Chico High School very proud of them. 54 as .gssfioti - CALVIN COLLIER: FFA l-41 FHA 4, TAMMY COWLEY: FHA l-4, Historian 2, Program Chairman 3, Reporter 4g Volleyball 2, Track 4, Drill Team l-3, Captain 3: Tennis l- 2g Twirler 4g Chico Project Show l-4g State Finalist Miss North Texas Pageant 2-4g State Finalist Miss U.S, Teen for Texas 4: State Finalist Miss Texas Teenage 4. Coach Wilson brought many changes to the Chico team. Coach Wil- son felt that the team needed to be introduced to a new offense and defense. 'Sometimes your players constitute what type of of- fense and defense you will usef' Coach Wilson said. Establishing a new offense and defense is always a tough decision to make because the transition is al- ways toughest on the athletes themselves. The players are making the adjustments but we still have a long way to go. I am proud of every individual that gave everything they had and then some. Chico High School is in a transitional stage and the athletic program is no exception. With the fundamen- tal groundwork set, the Chico Dragons can look for- ward to an exciting 88-89 athletic season. 66 Kneeling is the new athletic director and head foot- ball coach, Glenn Wilson. Halal Wmk : fuccau The junior high Dragons had a successful year if you don't measure success by the number of games won. If you watched the team improve with each game and saw how hard they worked, you knew they were successful. The major objective for the '87 season was to teach the team basic skills and to see how they would respond to different types of defense, Coach Ron Langthorn said. Success cannot always be measured by one factor and this Dragon team showed a lot of enthusiasm Jeff Hughes, Ng. 77, and Joe Davis, No. 23, watch as fellow dragon and a very important factor, the desire to learn. takes down H MIUSHP BUWOS' A! Despite this, the team produced a winning record and five all- district selections. This can be attributed to the teamis positive attitude and the confi- dence they had in each other. With the graduation of five seniors this year, we will have similar problems to over- come next year. We will return five athletes that received quite a lot of playing time. Therefore we will have varsity playing exper- ience. We will also return two of our top four starters. Next year looks very promising Coach Ferguson said.
