I felt very honored when, at the annual Publications Banquet, I was announced as the Editor for this year, but I also knew I was accepting a responsibility not only to the Caduceus Staff but to the entire student body. Many new and exciting events have occurred since that night, along with them many problems that arise throughout the process of editing any publication. I'm sure I would not have had the courage to meet some of these problems had it not been for Mrs. Ward and Mr. Howard, who did so very much for me, not only as advisor and principal but as friends. The photographers deserve a big thanks for giving their time at our con- venience. Also, thank you to the business- men of Chico for your support of our book. Thanks to the Student Body of Chico Senior High School for your tremendous support. I sincerely hope you enjoyed your book as much as I have enjoyed editing it. My last and truly one of my special thanks goes to the Caduceus Staff. You have worked so hard and I know we have all learned a great deal from our many and varied responsibil ities. No other edi- tor has had amofie wonderful staff to work with. 2 l The Caduceus Staff was composed of ten members. The Assistant Editor was Lynda Henderson. The Class Editors were Lynda Henderson, Senior, Gayle Poore, junior, and Peg Fortuin, Sophomore. Fea- ture Editors were jan Brown, Clubs, Sandy Branson, Arty Nadine Murray, Faculty, jan Bowen, Sports . Chuck Ruttan served as Business Manager assisted by Bob Vanderley. Lynda and I worked to- gether on School Government and the Queen's pages. We have tried to bind many happy memories between the covers of this year's Caduceus. We selected Trees as our theme because we feel that trees are the living symbols of our growth and of the natural beauties of our school and community. The memories of our High School days have been preserved on the leaves of the 1961 Caduceus. Now, in closing, I leave this thought: As we have therefore opporttmity, let us do good unto all men. Galatians 6:10 May the peace of God be with you. This lovely little lady has just com- pleted her ninth year of teaching here in Chico. Having served on the Willows High School faculty, Mrs. Ward, in 1952 became a member of our faculty. Since her arrival she has served as English teacher, Head of the English Department, Counselor, and Yearbook Advisor. Aside from her ability to make an English class interesting and helpful, Mrs. Ward's charming personality has won her the re- f'- spect and. admiration of the stu- dents and faculty alike. The Cad- uceus Staff is especially greatful for her help and inspiration on our book this year. She gave up her position as Head of the English Department so that she could take on the responsibility of being our Yearbook Advisor. Mrs. Ward has one daughter, Mrs. john Stumbos, and three grandsons who live in Sacramento. Grandmother, David, Michael and john V3 Checking Senior Pictures Her grandsons and her cabin at Fallen Leaf Lake are her main inter- ests. When Mrs. Ward retires she plans to live in Sacramento during the winter, and at the Lake during the summer. After retiring she hopes to have time to do some writing and the lake is the ideal place for it. Mrs. Ward, may your life be as rewarding as you have made it for others. May God be with you always. 49' 'F' -my X fi Mn Mm MQNQQU jess Kathy jess Castillo, Mr. Caduceus of '61, is one of the athletic greats of Chico Senior High School. He participated in all the major high school sports, including football, basketball, and baseball. jess is president of Boys' Block C, where he takes responsibility of organ- izing the group activities of this boys' athletic service club. jess also belongs to the Key Club and does his part in other school affairs. His friendly and out-going personality has won him the admiration and popularity of the students and faculty. We feel this honor is richly deserved. Kathy Lamphere, Miss Caduceus of '61, is respected and admired by every student in Chico Senior High School. Serving as president of the Girls' Student League, Kathy has demonstrated her leadership qualities as well as her personal pride in a job well done. Aside from her GSL duties, Kathy finds time to belong to CSF and Inner Circle. Kathy's simple manner and sincere interest in people are two of the personality traits which gained her the nomination and election of Miss Caduceus. This year since the election of Mr. and Miss Cad- uceus was so unusually close, Rosalie Andrews and Al Lehman have been designated runners-up for the hon- ors. During the past year both have had the responsi- bilities of holding a student body office. Al served as student body president and Rosalie as student body sec- retary. Aside from this both have found time to parti- cipate in many of the schools organizations. Because of this, we must make life's challenge not of the past, but of the future . With the challenge of the future we must learn to create, build, and do thing s that will not only be acceptable to others, but to Him as well. We are today's tomorrowg a s m all p art of the glow that is destined to become tomorrow's flame which will bend and mold the world with its coming. To anyone turning the pages of this yearbook, look well into its contents, for it can serve not only as a reminder of the past but also as a preview of the future. For those who can see themselves, consider what you see very carefully for your future's foundation can be, in most cases, interpreted from it. Speaking for the student council I can say that we have tried to bring you, the stu- dent body of Chico Senior High, a year that we hope you have enjoyed . There have been trying times and then again there have been rewarding ones . In every case, however, we have enjoyed being your servants and we can only hope that we have not been fail- ures but rather that we have filled your desires in every way possible. May your lives be filled with all happiness and the success of a fruitful life . Re- member that what you attain is completely in your own hands . Strive not for the finan- cial status of riches and wealth only, but work towards gaining other wealth and riches such as friendships and happiness . And, in doing these things, think not only of your- self, but of others . TO A PINE Ascending toward the hazy sky You stand, no other creature nighg And at thy feet the deep blue brine Reflects thee. Oh thou glorious pine! -Marie Christensen F aculzyf I+---., .ff ' I. i' -. Mr . Howard came to Chico High in 1948. Before coming to Chico he taught mathematics, coached, and was a principal for eleven years. He came here as boys' vice principal and became principal two years ago . He feels that there is one Word to describe this year's student body, HOUTSTANDING. He also feels that this year's graduating cla s s has a great deal of unity. This is s hown by the participation in yells at assemblies, students assuming more responsibilities, and the solving of many m aj o r problems . The main disadvantage of being principal, he says, is that it keeps him from having close contact with the students . Nlrs. Rathwell Dean of Girls, first came to Chico Senior High in September 1947, as Girls' Vice-principal. She had formerly taught mathematics at Beverly Hills High in Beverly Hills, California. She feels this year's student body is Just as good as ever and has shown an outstanding amount of unity as a stu-- dent body. When asked about the gradu- ating class of '61 she replied, It is one of the best classes in years and has ex- cellent leadership and unity. As to advan- tages and disadvantages of being Dean of Girls, she said, There are no disadvan- tages for everything is advantageous. The main thing is that I get to know most of the girls in Chico High. Mr. Boulding, Dean of Boys, first came to Chico Senior High in September, 1952, as a P.E. teacher and coach. He previously had taught P.E. in San juan High School near Sac- ramento. He feels this year's student body is better than last year's and that the graduating class of '61 has a great deal of unity. When asked about the advantages and disadvantages of being Dean of Boys, he replied, This is a hard question to answer for being Dean of Boys offers quite a different slant on the school and students from the other positions I've had. I enjoy my job more this year for I have more responsibilitiesg and I like to Work with this age group. The only dis advantage is that I'm not able to know as many of the students as I did when working with the P.E. classes. Then here's to the oak, the brave old oak, Who stands in his pride aloneg And still flourish he, a hale green tree, When a hundred years are gone! -Henry Chorley SENIOR MEMORIES During the past three years at Chico Senior High we have grown fr o m children, too often hasty and to our chosen phases of life: college, the service, a career, or marriage. The s e have been both fulfilling and influential years. Our Sophomore year was new andexciting, but a little awesome. Many others had exper- ienced these mixed e m o tio n s before, but to us the year was completely different. Chosen to lead our spirited class were Jim Hutchinson, President, Jim Lucchessi, Vice Presidentg Gayle Everly, Secretary, Sue Brogunier, T reasurerg Kathie Kempton and Jean Gould, Girls' Repre- sentativesg Louis Borges and Fred Teroii, Boys' Representatives. The next year we were Juniors . Wehad learned about high school and the wonderful exper- iences it afforded. We even dared to challenge the Mighty Senior Class for the title of Men and Women, though unsuccressiiilly, for this was to be our privilege for the following year . During this eventful year Eric Loehwing was President, Kathy Lamphere, Vice President, Kathie Kempton, Secretaryg Carla Larson, Treasurer: Janice Hinton and Suzanne Brogtmier, Girls' Representatives: and Jim Wurschmidt and Jim Hutchinson, Boys' Representatives . When our Senior year arrived, we faced it gladly and yet a little hesitantly, realizing that we s till had many good times to come but that it was to be our last year together. We were finally THE Senior Men and Women and me nbers of our class were the student leaders of our school. This was a year of happy times and reminiscences . The Student Body Officers from our clas s were Al Lehman, President: Carol Avrit, Vice President, Rosalie Andrews, Secretaryg Kathie Kempton, Jan Brown, Linda Blewett, and Karen Olson, Yell Leaders f Now our Senior Year has ended, and again we are experiencing mixed emotions . Now we are looking forward to our new lives as adults with a valuable function in life. We will always remember our happy days at Chico Senior High. The 1960 football season was certainly an interesting one. Inexperienced players made mistakes, but these were minimized by hard play and team work. The players did an out standing job as the season record indicates. Coaching this group of boys has been a real pleasure and a most gratifying experience. 41 MANA Jil' GERS, jim Morris andjim I-Ioutsma. There were 21 boys who earned their block C's including 2 managers, and it is hoped by Skip and Mel that all of them will go out for the Varsity next year . Although the Panther JV's got off to a slow start by losing to the Oroville Tigers the coaches felt that the team progressed more each game . The 1960 season marks another outstanding year for the little Panthers . !
