principa1'S message AN OBLIGATION Chico High School will change radically in the not too distant future unless we vitalize our traditions, strive to make these traditions a living part of all who enter our school. California is growing at a tremendous rate. People of all kinds, from all over the United States are thronging westward. A change has come over our state, a change for the worse. One needs only glance at the newspapers, listen to the radio to recognize the downward trend. This population surge will soon come to our com- munity bringing with it all types of social problems including those of Chico High. We have an exceptional student body, students who respect their school, and who are extremely proud and fond of Chico High. Over the years we have developed high standards of school citizenship, of achievement in many fields. You have won the respect of all those with whom you have asso- ciated. On your various trips representing Chico High our students have brought honor to Chico and Chico High. This surge of population will bring with it those who would break down our standards, trample on our tradition and ideals, change the complexion of Chico High unless you, the students of Chico High, do all in your power to uphold those traditions, ideals, and stan- dards, and imbue every newcomer to Chico High School so that he will become an ardent sharer in them, and that he will in turn transmit the ideals of this school to those who follow him. You and I have the obligation to transmit this school, -- not less, -- but greater, better and more beautiful -- than it was transmitted to us. This is our obligation, our duty, our privilege. Let us not fail! Carl I. Schreiter

if ff! The Caduceus assembly was conducted by Gene Tapie, Master of Ceremoniesg and acts by Doug Sundby and Mike Calkins provided a well-rounded program for the student body. In the pictures below, both Doug and Mike are equipped with geetars,'. One difference-Doug's ain,t and Mike's is , The 1956-57 Caduceus Staff worked with enthusiasm, interest, and displayed their individual abilities in the production of the yearbook. Judy Grossman proved to be a tireless and most competent editor. Keith Calkins, assistant editor, doubled as advisor for the activities section, and is Well prepared to assume his duties as editor next year. Not enough credit can be given to Phil Speegle for the layout of the book and his work as art editor. Nancy Nugent did an excellent job in com- pleting the difficult class section of the book. Dee Cady, Mike McPherson and Iim Andruss handled the business affiliations very adequately. The sports sections indicate the effort put forth by Ianice McKinney, Bob Dussault, and Mike Daughtery. Cathy Christenson displayed her ability in completing the club section and handled the Mr. and Miss Caduceus con- test very satisfacto- rily. Sharon Bowles, . nextyears art editor, developed the facul- ty section.
