Mrs, Conklin and Mrs. Martin, both biology teachers, are the sponsors. The club has speakers on many things-from Christmas trees to stars, They also take field trips from time to time. One of particular interest this year was to Gray Lodge, a water fowl refuge. Yet strangely enough they did. Edited by David Scott in the fall and Joan Griffen in the spring semester the Red and Gold brought the students of Chico High up to date on news around the school, including social activities, club and class events, sports and a few contro- versial editorials. The paper, a weekly publication, besides giving CHS this information was a bargain, selling for one thin nickel. Besides the regular editions, the ace journalists came forth with a six-page Christmas edition, a thirty-fourth anniversary edition, and the tradi- tional senior edition, in which the graduates always write their wills, leaving something of value to the under-classmen. During the first f 'Vp month of school it was invited to attend the Cal-Missouri MERKHBAY , game in Berkeley, and to perform at Cal's Pep Rally. The prowling Panthers of the football field turned in a very thrilling performance this year. The spectators Who came to see these red-and- gold gladiators do their stuff were not disap- pointed. All in all, we could say that We had a fair season. Of course it would have been better if Oroville had shown a little more cooperation. Still it was a season filled with fun and excite- ment galore. Although many Varsity boys have graduated, other players Will still carry on. Remember, Watch out for the Panthers of Chico High! ew Basketball AL Mr. Schlueter, director of athletics and head basketball coach at Chico High school, this year saw the third of his crack ball teams enter the Bay Area Tournament of Cham ions p , Since coming to Chico High as a graduate of Chico State college, Mr, Schlueter has coached many Hne teams and has generally made his pres- ence pleasantly known around the campus at C. H. S. Good luck to you, Al, and we hope that Chico High has meant as much to you as you have to us. WAYNE Wayne Boulding, a graduate of Sacramento State and U. C. L. A,, came to Chico this year via San Juan High. As coach of the B, C, and ND basketball teams Wayne has already made a mark for himself, and as B baseball coach his record grows greater. His stage presence in assemblies has made him a friend of boys and girls alike, and we're look- ing forward to seeing him around for many more seasons of outstanding sports. Best wishes for a successful season, Wayne, with your promising B baseballers. A TEAM. Front row: D. Xvilson, M. Eichwald, B. Jones, S. Lowell, B. Ladd. Row 2: R. Laffins, R. Picanco, B. Striegel, F. In the Varsity division, this yearls season developed one of Coach Al Schlueter's outstand- ing teams, second only to his 1950 champs. who Went on to Win the Tournament of Champions. The Panthers started the season with eight consecutive Wins and Went into league play unde- feated. After a slow start in the league Chico's fighting tea-m came from behind to tie Shasta and Win a Co-Championship in the Big Four. Next came the Acker Tournament, which the Panthers Won for the first time, including the play-off game with Shasta for the right to go to the Tournament of Champions. Chico Won this game with a spectacular finish that the fans will never forget. With five hundred members of the student body for support the team continued their Win- ning by defeating Albany High and Lowell, earning the right to play in the finals at Berkeley where they were nosed out in the second half by Alameda. Under the leadership of Wayne Boulding, the Chico High B team Won second place stand- ing in the Big Four conference. Congratulations to Wayne and his outstanding team. B TEAM. Front row: E. The Panther track team was by far the strong- est in their league this year. Due to injuries and a late practice session they dropped their first practice meet to the always strong Nevada Union. The Panthers returned strong in the fol- lowing meets to chalk up a long line of wins for all the divisions. With many returning veterans from the last three years' champion teams, we know they will be a strong contender for their fourth successive championship in the l953 session of the Big Five League. The Panther lightweights CMB and CHQ played a leading role in the majority of all the track meets in the '53 season. Dropping only a few contests by small margins, they displayed a lighting spirit that was sometimes the differ- ence between victory and defeat. They continued their driving spirit through the Big Five meet, contributing their share and in some cases a little more in the way of points for the overall meet, These boys all have what it takes to make Chico the team to beat in the years to come. Not being the largest boys in the school, they more than make up for it on the track-Where skill, spirit and determination are leading factors. L 'IDAM lront row: R. Benton, T. Hollins, R. Palmer, D. We have worked hard to give you a complete album of school events. At this time, I would like to thank Judy Grant, who was the assistant editor and the club section editor. Helping her were Karen Moore, Nell Dickey, Barbara Windsor, and Mary Claire Creech. You did a swell job, girls! Without the splendid work of Doug Mann, the business manager, and Jon Bigelow, the sale of our book would not have been a success. El Ray Franklin was the fellow who took care of the money. Thanks, boys, for being so dependable and enthusiastic. Kathy Werner, the senior editor, with the help of Sharon Best and Roxie Price, came up with a very different and attractive section. The class section editor was Monte Crosby. Sally Ewing and Marge Hendrix assisted Monte in making it the best ever. Maxene Mor- ris, girls' sports editor, and Ellen Hollinger have done their part in making the book a success. The faculty section was edited by Gayle Snodgrass. Sharon Westlake helped to put an outstanding division in the book. Barbara Schaller helped me with the student activities and was always ready with a helping hand. Norman Larson, the boys' sports editor, was in charge of the football season. Gene Rideout took over basketball, while Gene Furr did boxing and track. Dick Wilson was in charge of baseball. All of these features were brought to you, the reader, in a new way. Audrey Priddy, the art editor, and Ray Burke carried our theme throughout the book in a very eye-appealing way. Bill Eames and Wilton Sergent took the snaps of school activities and I thank them for being on the job whenever they were needed. Our special thanks go to Mrs. Ward, our staff adviser. Her untiring patience and excellent supervision have been appreciated by all. We have had fun working together, and we hope you have fun remembering through your Caduceus all the happy times at Chico High. V MARILYN IVIOODY, Editor.
