Already other countless thousands have given their lives in order that the ideal of free- dom may be preserved in the World. Among those now nobly serving their country are our soldiers, sailors, and flyers who are facing the dangers of total War . Others are the deter- mined men and Women in our industries who are working with only one purpose in mind . . . to achieve victory. Still another group are those persons Who cannot go to the front or work in industry but are nevertheless rendering valuable aid to the War effort. It is only through the toil, sacrifices, and complete co-operation of all these men and Women that We can hope to achieve vic- tory . . . and the chance to build a better world. In this book We pay homage to these citizens of the World . . . to them We dedicate this 1942 CADUCEUS I-IO EWOR America is now involved in the greatest War of its history. This conflict has been called The War for Peacen, but it is foolish to think that a peaceful world will suddenly be born as soon as arms are discarded. Such a World will come about only after years of hard Work and the end- less co-operation of intelligent, broadminded Americans with other citizens of the World. Not only scholars and diplomats but professional men and craftsmen, engineers and skilled tradesmen will find their places in the task. The schools, more than any other institution, are now preparing young Americans for this under- taking which lies ahead. Because of the Work being done in the schools, the students of today will be able to play an important part in the huge task of tomorrow. In this book We have tried to show how this school is helping to train young Americans. In every classroom and in every activity, students are gaining information and experience which soon will prove valuable to them. In our schools and education we place our trust for the future. The Teacflh 5' aff. . . Giving his all in the truly American War effort is Mr. Shaper, who has encouraged eleven hundred students to become active, not passive, citizens of their country. Next in sharing with Mr. Shaper the task of running a large school smoothly through the uncertainties of War are Mr. Rinker, vice-principal, Dr. Thomas, dean of girls, and Mr. Urlaub, dean of boys. Mr. Schreiter, director of the evening high school, has several math classes training in War problems. The English department has laid new amphasis on accurate reading and the following and giving of directions, an important step for victory. Music, art, and drama classes have given practical assistance in the form of programs and posters for community organizations. A back- ground for understanding the world situation is offered in the social science and history sections. The foreign language department is fostering the understanding of other civilizations and bring- ing the Good Neighbor policy home. The physical education departments gave and gave: First-Aid courses, and much more out- door activity. Extra stress has been placed on the necessity of the Cadet Corps. In the shops a twenty-four hour run of classes began, and boys learned all about trucks and tractors in no time. While the mechanical drawing and math classes became very practical in their use of slide rules and figures. The typing, bookkeeping. shorthand, and junior business sections prepared a great num- ber of students for important jobs, while the senior problems class gave many the opportunity for a peek into what was in store for them in the outside world. The life-science classes measured vitamin units, while Mr. Paulson directed chemistry and physics students in the putting out of incendiary bombs. The agriculture classes led us to successful farming through the Victory Gardens, and the home economics groups taught us the values of minerals and vitamins. So you see this has truly been a big year and a significant one at Chico High. As long as our faculty continues its excellent Work in our momentous war effort, we, the younger genera- tion of America who have Worked with them and understand their efforts, will never concede to any permanent or temporary defeat of our civilization. It was either that the sophomore girls always had more fingers in the pie or that the boys knew that they would soon be needed for national defense work, but nevertheless all four class ofiicers went to the feminine half. Barbara Lee Ruth took over the presidency and was assisted by Peggy Morehead as vice-president, Mary Virginia Doyle as secretary, and Dorothy Zucca as treasurer. Helping the Student Body Council through Victory Gardens and constitutional revisions were the representatives there again the girls had the upper hand in no timej, B-ettijane Stile, Marijane Martin, Ernest Lusk, and Gordon Moore, whose position on the Council following his resignation was filled by Barbara Lee. Besides working on Student Body affairs the sophomores became very active in selling Defense Stamps tand buying them tool, in staying out of the halls in sunny weather, and in making simply lovely bandages in First-Aid. . Charles Alexander stepped into the office of vice-president, and the job of secretary Went to Mary Stackhouse. Billy McCray was elected treasurer and found himself faced with stacks of money and handfuls of requisitions, while the representatives, Fern Ludden, Betty Zumwalt, Harold Rodarmel, and Frank Mills, started working with the older stu- dents for bigger and better dances and a lower priced Student Body card. Recognition was brought this class when Jean Byerly was elected G. S. L. treasurer. During the years the Chico High School P. T. A. has devoted itself to an understanding friendship between parents, teachers, and students and to an appreciation of the limitations of home and school and their effects upon the growth and development of students. Programs for the year follow educational themes. This year First Lines of Defense started as the theme, but upon our entrance into the war, Patriotism was quite naturally adopted. Every year since its organization worthy projects have been undertaken and accomplished. Each year the services have been extended to cover broader fields. Some of the earlier projects undertaken were the framing of the large pictures which hang in several rooms and corridors. the founding of the school cafeteria and the free lunch fund. Several suits of clothing have been given underprivileged students in this last year. Every year such very necessary things as glasses, dental work, and needed operations are provided for. Through all these years of work the P. T. A. has become indispensable to Chico High School. P. T, A. lLcl't to righll Front row-Mesdames Shaper, Mortensen, A.Ilrlx'edg'e, Daniel, Bully. Ever active in school affairs throughout the year, the Girls' Junior and the Boys' l-li-Y's sponsored the Winning candidates in the contest for the selection of Mr. and Miss Caduceus. Previous contests have made Miss Caduceus an institution at Chico High. This year, when the need for a Mr. Caduceus was felt, the contest was opened to boys. On the first day of the sales each book sold counted two votes for each candidate, and the two Hi-Y's swept into the foreground, piling up leads that the most persistent work by other clubs could not overcome. lt is the policy of the Hi-Y's to work for others. Scarcely a week goes by Without some worthy benefit being scheduled by one of these clubs. Chartered three years ago, the Junior Girls' Hi-Y keeps the calendar filled with cake sales and benent parties. One of their biggest social events is the annual Christmas party for under-privileged children, ln February, with Sally Gay as president, the Junior Hi-Y entertained the Boys' and the Senior Girls' Hi-Y's at an old fashioned box social. Both clubs are proud of the fact that earnest Hi-Y members make such active student leaders. As indicated by its motto, Scholarship for Service, the purpose of the California Schol- arship Eederation is to encourage students to excel in scholarship so that they may be of service to their country. Encouragement is offered in many ways. Chico High's chapter, 168, holds monthly meetings to conduct business and to enjoy programs. Art and Music was the theme of the fall semester meetings: Keeping Up With the Times, of the spring. Regional and dis- trict conventions are held so that C. S. E. members of different communities may meet, exchange ideas, and enjoy each other's company. As a farewell to its graduating members, the C. S. F. has a picnic in June. Russell Jobe was president for the fall term, with Evelyn Kelly, Pat Hocking, Edith Lively, Junella Luckinbill, as supporting officers. Donna Dean Stewart, president for the spring term, had Olive Poeschel, Marijane Martin, Edwin Iloff, and Lavelle Lassus, as helpers. First of the chapter's activities this year was the District Convention held at Oroville on November l. Next came the second annual Brain Brawl with the Oroville chapter, held in Chico this year. Oroville was again defeated. On January 27 the chapter presented an assembly pro- gram based on occurrences at an observation post. In February. delegates were sent to the Regional Convention at Santa Rosa, ending the year's inter-school activities, since the Spring District Convention was canceled. Home Enffwslhsfs . . . Said to be the most active organization in high school, and by far the largest, the Home Economics Club won glory in the strife for victory during '41 and '-42. Helen Orberg presided over the meetings, and the adviser, Mrs. Madsen, gave help Whenever the girls needed it. As usual, the club contributed to the Boys' Block C injured athletes fund. They donated money to the local Health Center also, and helped a number of girls go to the Hi-Y conference this spring. Selling candy and ice cream was a side line at Hrst glance, but we soon found that the girls saved the ice cream and candy Wrappers to purchase toys for underprivileged children. Polish- ing the trophy case to proud brilliance and serving Victory Lunches in the school cafeteria were two ways in which the girls earned points and credits for their club. Tiresome days for convalescing teachers and students were shortened by the arrival of a bright bouquet or sympathetic note from the club. Last fall the girls gave a mammoth party jointly with the F, F. A. and Block HC, and while the last weeks of school were rolling past they closed their triumphant year with an even larger picnic. again given with the P. F. Congratulations to Mr. Eddy and the cast of the '42 Senior Play, who gave us the never- to-be-forgotten glimpse into the lives of the Sycamore family in the Broadway and Hollywood success, You Can't Take It With You. The comedy by Moss Hartt and George Kaufman was presented at the Senator theater before a full house. The plot centered around the lives and loves of an erratic New York family. Mother was starting to write another novel, Father and the ice--man were playing with skyrockets and toy sailboats in the basement, Grandpa had not paid his income tax for years because the govern- ment thought him dead, the oldest daughter made candy to sell and took ballet lessons from a queer Russian chap, but the other daughter was very sensible and very much in love with her boss's son. What happened when that son brought his parents to dinner on the wrong evening, and upper-class New York got a peek into the true lives of the Sycamore family? Mr. Eddy and his cast showed us what happened in three scenes, and left us chuckling over the many jokes and excellently worked out lines and timing. Many persons were heard to say, That's what we need in a year like 1942, something to pep us up and keep us going. 'You Can't Take It With You' Hlled the bill. Before the league season had started, the Panthers had won three contests and lost five to various local and outfof-town teams. During the Hrst five league games, our boys Won games with Yuba City and Red Bluff but lost miserably to Oroville, Redding, and Marysville. However, the turn of the semester found the Panthers better organized. They Won four contests, losing only to Oroville. With this spurt at the last of the season, the boys managed to slide into second place in the league. Coach Schlueter, in his first year at Chico High, almost gave us a championship team. The B team boys started strong and won most of their first games. However, a stroke of bad luck caused them to lose three league games during the latter part of the season. Nevertheless, the players who gained experi- ence on Coach Schlueter's smooth-passing, sharp-shooting team this year, will undoubt- edly gain success on next year's varsity. With ,many experienced boys on the squad, the team started winning at the Hrst of the season and never slackened its blistering pace. ' Handicapped because of its small size, the D team lost out on the championship, but nevertheless turned in an enviable season. It was too much for our boys to miss, so they packed as many as possible into a few private cars and made the trip to Roseville. There a small but determined band of Panthers trotted onto the Roseville track to compete against powerful forces, most of whom had a full schedule of meets behind them. Yet, when our boys 2 had left the track, they had run up a collection of points which was good enough for second place hon- ors in the varsity division. As baseball season began to roll around this year, it looked like that long-hoped-for cham- pionship for our Panther varsity baseball men. When the time came for the players to report, Coach Nixon found each position filled by a veteran. Furthermore, many players who had received experience on last year's junior var- sity found places on the squad. In addition to all this good news, the Chico pitchers. Jones, Maddux, McCray, and Bearse looked to be the best hurdlers in the league. Pre- league games went OH nicely with the Panthers taking their share of victories and also getting seasoned for their Big Six opponents. Our boys were further encouraged by the new high school baseball diamond which has recently been built. P However, the bad news came only two days before the first scheduled league game, Athletic contests were banned because of the tire shortage. One bright spot in the Whole affair was the Sunset League, which is composed of local teams. The Panthers have had the opportun- ity to play in this circuit and their results have been admirable. A few games have also been played with out-of-town teams. In spite of the season's obstacles and misfortunes, the boys kept working and training and derived a great deal of enjoyment from playing the Great American Game. Our junior varsity baseball team opened and closed its 1942 season with a 6 to 5 vic- tory over the Durham Varsity. YVith Barth and Abbay on the mound, Coach CoX's boys obtained the desired results, These boys looked as if they might be able to weld themselves into a championship club, but war conditions prevented. However, ex- perience gained through participation in the Sunset League will help them on next year's varsity. Affrlef 2' flssoclhfzbn . . . The Girls' Athletic Association, which is composed of approximately one hundred seventy- five members, is governed by the Council pictured above. The oflicers are elected by the members, and the sports managers are in turn appointed by the oflicers and the advisers. This year's presi- dent, Betty lVliles, has been ably assisted by Helen Lewis, vice-president, Vernes Cobeen, secre- tary, Lois Dalrymple, treasurer, and Marge Coutolenc, point recorder. Girls' sports are carried on in two groups. Bus students take part in their games at noon, while students who live in town participate in their sports after school. Each girl receivesvone hundred points for each sport in which she is active, providing she attends six out of eight prac- tice games and all tournaments. Up to two hundred points are given for minor sports, such as bicycle riding. hiking, and horseback riding.. Each member of the Council also receives one hun- dred points for her year's work. Girls who have earned a thousand points during their high school career are given a Block Other awards are also given to the girls for points they earn in athletics. A very successful year of both work and play has been completed by this organization. After hockey and volleyball season had been completed, a 'meeting of the entire club was held. At that meeting the year's officers were introduced, emblems were given out, and skits were presented by each class. Hockey emblems were given to the seniors and volleyball emblems to the juniors for their winning teams in those sports. To complete an eventful year, the girls abandoned their racquets, hockey sticks, and volley- balls for an afternoon and held a spring picnic at the Sycamore Swimming Pool, PAGE 7 7 fl f er Scfzool Sports . . .
