Through these activities our young men and women learn the meaning of teamwork, the value of good sportsmanship and pride in accomplishment. Good scholarship is of first importance, and that which makes our school outstanding among high schools. However, it is participation in athletics, musical groups, stage productions, school publications, the math club, the chess club and many others, that is the foundation of the esprit de corps which makes Chicago Vocational High School a great school. We are On The March, ever forward toward higher goals of achievement in scholastics, in sports, and in all activities in which we participate. 141 Wo:-le and 770 Pay 5 I K Q , 43235 1? Chicago, where more printing is done than any other city in the country, has an ever increasing need for well Trained craftsmen. Our busy print shops are helping to provide that need. Fred Skimel is pictured making an original design for a letterhead. Ron Wachowiak is setting type in the hand composing room where the basic principles and theories are learned. Bob Ayres and Norman Galey are at the key- boards of two of our type casting machines while John Schmidt is feeding metal to the pot. Carl Carney is keeping an eye on a iob going through the vertical press while Dean Schranz and Jim Molnar are operating an automatic folding machine. fl ARE BIG BUSINESS . THIS IS As we walk through our campus it is impossible not to be impressed with the beauty of the building and grounds. The trees, the luxurious growth of bushes, and the carpet of green grass sets off, and contrasts with, the shining glass and toweringpillars of the building. As we enter through any of the attractive, wrought iron doors we are immediately impressed with the long, gleam- ing corridors opening into the many functional classrooms, laboratories and shops, each equipped with the most modern furniture and tools to implement the learning process. This, indeed, is an appropriate setting for so fine an educational institution as is Chicago Vocational High School. ,al 'W Ii.?g5g.JA2f'c. The combined efforts of Mr. Eddy, Mr. Rico and some 225 students result in one of the most beautiful and spiritual presentations to be seen anywhere. The program features all of the traditional aspects of the holiday season. The young children, anticipating their gifts, so cleverly portrayed by living toys and Santa Claus, contribute the light touch. The white Christmas tree and ballet dancer provide a spectacle of impressive beauty. The Nativity Tableau, with accompanying music, tells the Greatest Story with such magnificent splendor as to impress all with the deeper, spiritual meaning of the Christmas Season. ....4..i Qklg ' , - ,m N ,. There is hardly a youth who at sometime or other hasn't fancied himself a part of those dreams. Here at C.V.S. many boys are making those dreams come true. ln the hangar, there are planes in all stages of repair, planes brought in, appearing to be a tangled mass of iunk, but which will fly again. Engines leave the shop, after being completely overhauled, to be reinstalled in The graceful ships that have been rebuilt in the hangar. And now we see iet engines in the shops, an indication that we continue On The March to new development, new theories, and new learning. Anthony Mandl, Ronald McClain and Terry Popravak are delving into the mysteries of a modern iet engine. Joe Stazzone is adiusting steering cables in a plane being rebuilt in the hangar, while Donald Witt is disassembling a fuselage in preparation for repairing it. 14e onauti . . . ? la T rf if AIRFRAME MECHANICS POWER PLANT 1T' ' :zz , - fxmsaf: le m me-H J 4 Wm I 3 bl' ftmg . . . LANGUAGE or MECHANICAL DRAFTSMAN N! Drafting is an integral part of our curriculum. All boys must complete two years of the basic principles of drafting, as a necessary prerequisite for the learning of mechanical vocations. The thoroughness of these basic courses is evi- dent in the accomplishments of those students who choose architectural or machine drafting as a vocation. They have surpassed all other high schools in national competition, Many continue their studies in college where their fine records reflect the splendid foundation laid at Chicago Vocational High School. Those who go directly into industry as iunior draftsmen are much sought after by engineering and architectural firms. Our instructors are ever on the alert for prog- ress being made in building and in engineering and thus continue On The March-Forward. John Le Donne, John Lemon, Louis Del Muro and Thomas Stanley are studying a model house, built in the architectural drafting department. Robert Bass is operating a blueprint machine and Roger Widdovvs and Robert Rock are discussing the mathematics involved in the design of gears. 1 f 1 6 Z ,ff fn 'O ,f ff Vf , WW! 5,5 2,W,f,, Z WW 2 1 ff 44, .f ,f , . The founder makes those pieces which will later be machined and assem- bled into tools, utensils, metal furniture and decora- tive objects, Ray Swanson is adiusting the carbons in an elec- tric furnace which will melt the aluminum to be poured into the mold being so carefully prepared by Ken Jurelc. The melting point of metals and their composi- tion, the preparation of the sand and its various mix- tures, the proper cooling and allowances for shrink- age the finishing and many other factors are all a part of this intricate process, The cutting, ioining, and forming of metals looks easy when these boys do it. With torches and electric welding machines and lots of know how they work with steel as we, the uninitiatecl, might work with sheets of paper, and lust as easily and safely. These are the young men who, in a few years, will be helping to build to- morrows' skyscrapers, sleek ships, and faster than sound aircraft. David Berron is perfecting his technique of ioining pipe, a good trick if you can do it,with no leaks. Dennis Centrachio and John Rivera are using a new machine which assures a straight and true cut. The acquiring of such new equipment and new knowledge and techniques is an important factor in keeping C.V.S. On The March! if 1 f f f X f ,A . Our spacious green lawns highlighted by colorful flower beds and edged with flowering bushes are a ioy to the many people who pass by, as well as to our own students. Our campus is living proof of the skill and knowledge of our horticulture stu- dents. Our modern toods laboratories are no exception. It is a long lump trom the old coal burning cook stove to modern electric stoves, the old ice box to today's refrigerators and freezers, and we are sure that the electric mixer will never lose its popularity to the old fashioned mixing spoon. Our new knowledge ot diets and vitamins assures us that we will be healthier than our grandparents ever dared to be. But the proof is still in the eating, and we who are lucky enough to get samples can give our approval. To us, the laymen, a ten thousandth ot an inch is almost meaningless, but not to the machinist. To him that is a generous tolerance. WOODVILLE Aeronautics PAUL ZIMMER Electronics ERVIN J. ZULEGER Auto Mechanics FRANCIS W. FLYNN Affable, cheerful, helpful, and friendly, possessor of ad- mirable virtues and laudable attributes, this highly respect- ed gentleman left us saddened, and suddenly poor indeed, by his untimely passing, in August, l958. Bigness was his hallmark, beginning with his impressive manly stature, featured in his understanding and treatment of human relations, and continuing through his many talents and special abilities. He was a big man spiritually too, worshiping God and practicing his religion with a faithfulness which was an in- spiration to his family and all who knew him. Because his every act was honest and honorable, he followed perfectly the advice of the saints of old- to work is to pray. A product of Chicago schools, he faithfully reflected the quality of his education with a fine, discerning mind and a pleasant, well-balanced personality. Following graduation from Parker High School, he entered Illinois Institute of Tech- nology, where he majored in electrical engineering. Further study at De Paul University won for him his master's de- gree. Varied and extensive experience in the field of electrical engineering, blended perfectly with his carefully planned education, qualified him as a registered, professional engi- neer. After assignments at Hirsch and Tilden, in the National Defense Program, he came to CVS in its earliest days, and soon rose to distinction as shop superintendent and director of the evening school. To the typical vocational high school student, his life presents a perfect pathway to a career of service and honor. To his colleagues, mindful of his pleasantness in an unfailing dedication to duty, he will remain a symbol of competence, consideration, and kindness. To all who face life's stern challenges, misfortunes, and uncertainties, his magnificent courage and indomitable spirit will remain as bright beacons piercing the darkness of fate, revealing the true nobility of sterling character and the strength it affords in adversity. 5,-f.: Q X iflif .31 S 5 3 fr 3 '5 ffzf rf Q 2 4 'is if 5, 4- sf-.Ex X ft y 4 i 7 up g 'S 1 ' gs f ' V 'KK f X 3.12 5 Sk . . . . Long hours of hard work and practice is repaid by the appreciation shovvn by their audiences. The superb performance ot our band at halt time never fails to bring lusty cheers from the stands. When they form a CVS and play our Fight Song, vve are all the more determined to vvin. At Christmas time, when vve present our pageant, the vocal groups in- spire us with their presentation of spiritual music. The highlight of the musical year is the Music Festival. They started the season strongly and remained undefeated until the city championship game with Austin High. ln a practice game with Calumet, we ran over the defend- ing champs by a score of 19-O. When the league games started, the boys had all the spirit and backing necessary to lead them to seven consecutive vic- tories without a single handicap or serious injury. The first opponent, Morgan Park, fell by the wayside as C.V.S. racked up 21 points to their 6. Tilden was moved down 19-O in the third game of the season. Lindblom was beaten by a score of 41-13, and Fenger and Dunbar fell to the South Section Champs on their way to the finals. The scores of those games were C.V.S. 26, Fenger 14, and C.V.S. 20, Dunbar O. C.V.S. beat a tough Taft squad in the quarter-finals, by a score of 38-14. Lane put up quite a fight when they fell to C.V.S. in the semi-finals. The score was C.V.S. 13, Lane 9. Then came Austin, the only team able to beat this tremen- dous squad of ours. In this Public Championship game C.V.S. lost by a score of 12-6. ,A ,W W VARSITY TEAM MR. PETERS, Coach Our swimming team this year has shown an excellent C.V.S. Spirit. With a record of I3 wins and 5 losses. The boys swam with sportsmanship in their hearts and with team spirit in their minds. The first meet was at Gage Park where we scored 60 points to their I2. South Shore C49-293 and Bowen CAO-353 toppled us but our swimmers came back strong to beat Uni- versity High Cby forfeitl, Hyde Park C48-241, Morgan Park CAO-375, Brother Rice C60-lol. Fenger gave us an unhappy experience by beating us 52 to I9 and again 47 to 30. Then we upset South Shore f34-383, Bowen C53- 26D, Brother Rice C60-125, and Hyde Park C60-123 and Morgan Park C42-38l. A triangular meet was held with Austin, Fenger, and C.V.S. The final score was Fen- ger 52, C.V.S. 40 and Austin 32. And on March 9, we tied with South Shore for the South Side relay championship. Then, five members of the squad graduated, which really hurt and as a result we drop- ped the next five, winning our eleventh and final game. The wins were over Calumet, 46-42, Westcott, 83- 46, Bowen, 67-61, and Fenger, 61-45. The West- cott and Fenger games were very elated victories for C.V.S. With these four victories, the Cavaliers intended to keep defeating their rivals. But these intentions were slightly disarranged, when the Carver Challeng- ers defeated C.V.S., 61-52. C.V.S. then made a decis- ive victory over Morgan Park, 81-49. C,V.S. continued throughout the season with losses to: Parker, 69-52, Harper, 69-58, Hyde Park, 65-39, and Hirsch, 68- 60. The final game was with South Shore. C.V.S. de- feated South Shore 56-51 . FROSH-SOPH BASKETBALL MR, Eieicxsom, coach The frosh-soph team of '58-'59 basketball season made a wonderful record. The regular league games brought 11 victories and no losses after a very dis- heartening record in practice games. ln the six practice games the trosh-soph was cle- feated three times, by Du Sable, Lindblom and Dun- bar.
