r A Message from the Director The picture on the opposite page shows the pouring of liquicl steel from a huge ladle into molds, forming white-hot ingots of steel. The lacile has just been filled with molten steel from an open-hearth furnace. The open-hearth furnace is a wonclerful clevice. The hearth is somewhat like a llat, howl- shapcci melting pot. in it are placed olcl steel scrap, limestone, ancl other minerals, including brittle pig iron, usually in a molten state. This mixture of raw materials is purilied, relinecl, ami comhinecl within the Umelting pot , emerging as a molten ilow of steel, the worlcl's most versatile ancl widely- useci metal. I spealc, in particular, to my boys ami girls in the gracluating class when I suggest to them that Chicago Vocational High School, their Alma Mater, has heen something ol a melting pot. Four years ago you came to us, representing many creecls ami national origins f- eager, hopelul, amhi- tious.
