I T - I Y HM NI THATIU The success of any modern insti- tution lies in its inter-departmental co- ordination and hence in the success of its administrators. The burden of many integral school jobs must be taken from the teacher if he or she is to devote full time to classroom instruction. A few of these tasks are: registration of students, making of students' programs, recording and enforcement of attendance, adjustment of students with parent con- ferences, coordination of curricula, and student placement in industry. These jobs, and many others of any adminis- trative or supervisory nature, are handled by an experienced corps of specialists who help to lighten the teachers load. Under the guidance of a Director, an Assistant Director, and a Shop Superin- tendent, the school functions through the following administrative assistants: two adjustment counsellors, a registrar, an attendance officer, a program coordina- tor, and a placement counsellor. These teacher-officials are ably assisted by a competent professional clerical force of seven trained office workers who are responsible to the Assistant Director. Each education department is coordi- nated by a chairman who is responsible to the Director. VIRGINIA HONAN, Secretary CHARLES R. MITCHELL. Assistant Director FRANK M. TAYLOR Biology The officers of the class of Iune, 1952, feel great pride in being among the 435 graduates. In September, 1948, we began our high school career as a very terrified group, 792 strong. Dur- ing our four pleasant years at the Palace We have enjoyed athletic ac- tivities in which our teams have Won honorable mention and championship awards. We have Worked hard and feel thankful for the guidance of a really great faculty. Our class has been fortunate in having members who have achieved national recognition in scholastic contests other than athletics. Among the many fine faculty mem- bers Who have contributed to our gen- eral well-being We Wish to mention one person in particular to whom we are more than grateful, namely our senior class sponsor, Mr. Taylor, who has done so much in the past year to make our careers interesting and successful. GRAHAM Mathematics The officers are happily flattered that they were chosen by their class- mates to represent the class of Febru- ary, l953. As our Technician goes to press we have a full semester of our high school career to complete. Many of our 187 graduates have achieved en- viable honors scholasticallyg many have won awards in athletics as well as in city-wide contests in other fields. All of our graduates deeply appreciate the spirit of Chicago Vocational High School during the past years when we have helped her to city championships in baseball, basketball, wrestling, bowling, and golf. We are confident this spirit will help us in the home stretch. We are indeed grateful to a generous and understanding faculty for its patience and help in making our high school years unregrettably enjoy- able, We are particularly indebted to our class sponsor, Mr. Graham, who has done a grand job and is still going strong. -NllTUi1IlTI Mr. Zuleger's boys perform cx face-lifting job on cz sick car in body and fender shop. At CVS, students are introduced to the automobile program usually in the second year. At this time the student becomes acquainted with the problems of automobile safety in the shop and on the streets and highways. l-le is taught the correct use of tools and equipment, he is schooled in automotive nomenclature, he is instructed in the mechanical operation of the car, he is taught to service cars as an assistant in a service station. ln the third year, the student works on the lubrication, brake, suspension, trans- mission, and wiring systems on actual car units. Next on the program is the Auto Engine Shop where the student is taught engine rebuilding and trouble shooting on the starting, generating, igni- tion, carburetion, cooling, and oiling systems. ln the fourth year the student may choose the Body and Fender Shop or the General Auto Repair Shop. lf he chooses Body and Fender Shop, he will have actual practice in repairing auto bodies and fenders, in welding and upholstering, and in lacquer and enamel spraying. lf the student chooses the General Auto Repair Shop, he is given the opportunity to rebuild engines, brake systems, front systems, transmissions, and rear-axle as- semblies. The auto shops at CVS have complete modern equipment and the facilities are such that any young man who has satis- factorily completed the Work in these shops is ready for profitable employment in the various branches of the automotive industries. Here students work mostly with naval aircraft. The two semesters in the lunior year are devoted to a study of non-flyable aircraft and equipment. Some ot the jobs include assembly and alignment of biplanes, cable Weaving, fabric repairs, rib stitching, riveting, primary recovering, and spraying. When they are Seniors, students concenf irate on overhaul and recovery ot fuselage, wings, and control surfaces. During this school year, Smith-Hughes students overhauled and recovered ten to tif- teen wings and tive tuselages. L 1 I Art at CVS includes two important fields: Costume Design and Commercial Art, Art is a required subject lor the girls and is an elec- tive as far as the boys are concerned e- al- though anyone with ability is welcomed. In all of the classes good taste is the standard. ln the Iunior and Senior years the student takes four periods of art a day, plus one year of a related subject, Costume Design stresses originality in the making of clothes. The student learns to sew, make patterns, and design clothes. Commercial Art consists of layout, figure drawing, fashion illustration, silk screen print- ing, and flat pattern design. Many students, after finishing their courses at CVS, continue their art training at various colleges. JOHN WANTUCH Plastics A beginner in the plastic shop becomes ac- quainted With the tools and machinery in the shop. Then he learns certain basic operations such as filing, sanding, buffing, drilling, saw- ing, cementing, and dyeing. His first simple project is the making of a purse pull. As time goes on, he learns to make a letter opener, bracelet, tie rack, and other objects, he also does some imbedding in liquid plastic and in- ternal carving. ln the second semester, the student has more difficult projects which require machin- ery. ln the third semester, he studies theory of plastics and becomes acquainted with at least twenty basic plastic materials and learns about their physical properties, applications, and limitations. He also learns how these ma- terials are molded and fabricated in industry. The shop has three compression presses with which the student gains practical molding ex- perience in the making of checkers, key tags, ash trays, and other objects. This experience is invaluable since molding plays a big part in the plastic industry. ln his last semester at CVS, the student is permitted to make his own special project. He is taught also to operate ot three-dimensional pantograph for the engraving of signs and de- signs in plastic and other materials. Many students make projects to be entered in the Ford Motor Contest. CVS has Won more prizes in this contest than any school in the country. CVS graduates who have majored in the field of plastics have no difficulty in obtaining excellent positions since specialists in this field are much in demand. Our drafting department has an enviable record. Each year our students have entered drawing in national competition. lnvariably they have won more prizes than all other schools combined. We can proudly state that this department, the largest in our school, is one of the best in the United States. Mechanical drawing and blue print read- ing are prerequisites to almost all shop sub- jects, therefore, all boys must complete two years of work in this field. ln these two years the students became acquainted with funda- mental skills and have opportunity to develop the accuracy and creative ability which are essential to success in machine design and architecture. lob possibilities are unlimited. Our grad- uates are qualified as junior draftsmen and many secure immediate employment as drafts- men, The architectural students are familiar with the terminology and with the theory of building construction, consequently, the entire construction field is open to them, and many choose this field for employment. ELECTRICITY Students in this department major in either Electricity or Electronics. ln todays World new electrical machinery and appliances are con- stantly being developedg hence the need for men to maintain and repair this electrical equipment is the greatest it has ever been, The repairman today must be able to trace cirf cuits, know the operation theory ot all electrical apparatus, and be able to handle tools so that he can locate the trouble and make the neces- sary repairs. The CVS Electric Shop is run on a job shop basis and the student is given practical experience in repairing all sorts of electrical equipment. Graduates who have majored in this tield find many job possibilities awaiting them. Since electronics is becoming ot increasing importance in the country's industrial program, there is a great demand for skilled technicians tor the installation, maintenance, and operation ot electronic equipment, ln the Smith-Hughes shop at CVS, students become familiar with the diagrams, circuit analysis, and parts of a re- ceiver, and in a related class they study the theory of electron tubes and learn how to apply their knowledge. ln their practical Work, stu- dents service radio receivers, amplitiers, and television setsg install public address systems in the school gym and assembly hall, adjust photo electric relaysg and study the industrial electronic components, CVS graduates in this field are able to qualify as radio-electronic technicians. These boys learn the secrets of cxrmaiures, commutators, coils and wiring in Mr. Ever- ett's electric shop. 3- gf- ma .ff 'Hn it Aa,-',,,..4-an-Yvf' -om., .,, ,.,,...TM.HY , .. ,w9vwY 'w , 'W.,,,..-- ' .L M Q W1 .Qui -ff--- 1 Zn M-J 1 3' if 1 , in 1 J .f f,-7 9- gfgsai 1? Q V4 G ER i L OFFICE AININ lu Stenography, Modern Office Practice, Business Machines, Accounting The Modern Office Practice and Stenography Departments work together to produce capable, Well-trained persons, many of whom acquire experience by working in the schools offices, so that they can fill the most exacting positions. The purpose of the Office Practice course is to create a job situation similar to that which will be encountered in an actual office, The business trainee is given time to develop a vital background of character, personality, and ability, and is then introduced to the latest types of modern office equipment. Students are rated according to performance, production, and accuracy. lnstruction is given in: Add-listing, Office Adminis- tration, Machine Billing, Machine Bookkeeping, Calculating Cliey-Driven and Rotaryl, General Clerical Skills, Dictaphone, Duplicating, and Filing. The Stenography Department is constantly enlarging to keep up with the demand for stenographers and typists. Em- ployers have been quick to hire graduates in this field. CVS is the only school offering such extensive training to apt students W- either girls or boys Csince many young men are needed in railroads or as traveling or technical secretariesl. Training includes the use of duplicators and electric typewriters, and of bookkeeping, calculating, and dictating machines, An extra period of theory and dictation is given each semester - an- other first for CVS. A beginner in Machine Shop is taught the general safety rules of the shop and the proper use of the hand tools. He learns how to oper- ate the engine lathe for such operations as: facing, center-drilling, straight turning, taper turning, and knurling. Upon choosing Ma- chine Shop as a vocation, he not only advances in the operation of the engine lathe, but he also completes projects with the aid of such power tools as the horizontal and vertical mill- ing machine, surface grinder, cutter grinder, drill press, shaper, and filing machine, He also does some heat treating and is taught to use instruments in hardness testing. Welding equipment is used for joining and severing metals. A unique feature of the Weld- ing process is that the operator can build up parts by the addition of metal. Students trained in this field are prepared to meet the highest requirements of industry. Graduates Who have specialized in Sheet Metal find jobs in connection With the produc- tion and repair of Ventilating and heating sys- tems, automobiles, advertising signs, and benches and lockers. Those who take the course in Foundry are trained, among other things, in metallurgy, in the operation of furnaces, and in the Work of laboratory technicians. UUUWURHI Cabinet Making, Pattern Making, Upholstery The Woodworking industry uses a large assort- ment of tools -- machine, hand, and mental. CVS is fortunate in having many varieties of machines in the seven woodworking shops - six woodworking classrooms and one millroom. Here the student learns to use practically every hand tool known to the trade. Important tools are also those fundamentals that are learned in English, mathematics, history, and science -M the mental tools. ln the woodshop stu- dents exchange ideas through the use of language. More and more technical books and magazines are being printed relating to Wood and the Woodwork- ing processes. ln working with wood, accurate measuring is necessary, some projects require com- plex computing. That phase of history which de- scribes how man has lived and the furniture he has used at various periods is a fascinating study. The scientific use of the lever is found in many hand tools and machine operations, and in the design of fur- niture and cabinets. The study of physics may be most useful to the Woodworkerg and the importance of chemistry is seen in bleaching operations and in mixing and applying various fine finishes. Thus it is very important for the vocational stu- dent to have good mental tools and to learn how to keep them sharp. Q ...-qw-a..,A.W, ,,44 ' ff' 9 Q 'av Iv' '-'- I , ,. up-ws.. 'L ROYAL P. We won the south section championship only to meet Lane Tech in the playoffs where we were beaten by a score of 13 to 6. Lane went on to win the public league championship. This year we played Lind- blom in the playoffs and lost 20 to 7. Lindblom then went on to win the public league championship. We finished the regular schedule with six wins and no losses and were tied with Fenger for the south section title. We had to flip a coin and we won the flip. One of our toughest games was with Morgan Park. This was a real blood feud since our coach Tony and Morgan Parks coach Bob Antonides are brothers. We finally nosed them out by the score of 20 to 14. Another tough game was with Bowen in a mud-slogged field. This was strictly a game of punting. Neither team could make much headway on the ground until Bob Biley, who made the all-south section team, ran through the mud and slog and scored two touchdowns. We won this muddy battle 13 to 2. Gur most outstanding lineman was Boy Prigge, our captain and an all-city selection. Boy played like a demon on both defense and offense and was voted the most valuable player on the team. Although we didn't win the playoffs, we still made a good showing in our league and we are proud of our team. After all we can't win every- thing 3 but we surely try, THE VARSITY SQUAD polillo. - K A SPRING TRAINING ,pa E' 23 W: FROSH-SOPH SQUAD botham, Walker, Mate. Coach Skoronski, Mgr. This season the lun- ior Cavaliers went all the way to capture the all-city league crown alter a spectacular Sl-50 victory over De La Salle, Chuck Sales, the dynamic forward, put in the winning tree throw with 26 seconds remaining in the game. This gave the Cavaliers their third city title in the past six years, and gave CVS the best record for wins over the Catholic league in the city. Hoopsters . . . in action CA HER PORT M TN We would need the whole book to print all the accomplishments of all the teams at Chicago Voca- tional School. Since we can't tell all about them, we will introduce you to them, Our golfers have qualified to play in the state golf match, Our wrese tlers are training hard to keep our school in the lime- light in that department. The cyclists are bringing new honors to the school with numerous wins We must admit that some of our bowlers must have five thumbs on each hand but all are learning how to use them and promise not to 'llet it happen again. The ice skaters appear to be in the same boat with the bowlers, some of them have two left feet but they, too, are determined to show 'em next winter. The swimmers can be found in the tank every day and assure us that they will be on top when the big competition challenges their superiority. The 1952 Cavalier baseball team is trying hard to duplicate last year's record of Winning the city championship, Few of last season's stars are back but it looks as though their shoes are being Well tilled. As We go to press, we can't record the final results but we are happy to say that We are leading the league. BA EBALL VARSITY BASEBALL Nolan, Pearson, Harrison, Fisher, Siboda, An- derson.
