s ecrinyiini 3n 1869 Chicago Teachers College celebrated iis eighty-titih biriliila on September 22, 1954. From its beginning in 1869. the name of the college has changed se eral times — Cook County Normal School. Chicago Nor- mal School, Chicago Normal College, and Hnallv Chicago Teachers College. Twenty acres of land were gi en to the institution in 1869 with tlic condition that the teacher trraining institution ne er be moxed. Daniel Wentworth, for whom the neighboring street was named, guided the school from its inception until 1882. The following year Colonel Frances Wayland Parker, father of progi-essi e education, took o er and succeeded in making this training school superior among in- stitutions of its type. In 1905 the College moxed into the present building with a new head, Ella Flagg Yoimg. She later became Superintendent oi Schools. Many inno ations ha e occurred on campus in the last few years. The addition of Business Education. Industrial Education, a Materials Center, and expanded graduate program, a North Side Campus, and a nature camp summer school, are but a fe v of the newer ieatines. All of this grew from an institution whose first eight veeks of acti ity were confineil to the limits of a boxcar more than eightv-fi e years ago — what will the future hold? W . « ' x- s P . » .
