Graduates ha e made significant contributions to education over the cars. We have chosen the eighty-fifth anniversary ot the College as a theme for this yearbook to help us c oluaie the future of the College in terms of its past tknelopment and achievement. From its beginning in 1869. the name of the college has changed se eral times — Cook County Normal School. Chicago Nor- mal School, Chicago Normal College, and Hnallv Chicago Teachers College. Twenty acres of land were gi en to the institution in 1869 with tlic condition that the teacher trraining institution ne er be moxed. Daniel Wentworth, for whom the neighboring street was named, guided the school from its inception until 1882. The following year Colonel Frances Wayland Parker, father of progi-essi e education, took o er and succeeded in making this training school superior among in- stitutions of its type. In 1905 the College moxed into the present building with a new head, Ella Flagg Yoimg. She later became Superintendent oi Schools. Many inno ations ha e occurred on campus in the last few years. The addition of Business Education. Industrial Education, a Materials Center, and expanded graduate program, a North Side Campus, and a nature camp summer school, are but a fe v of the newer ieatines. All of this grew from an institution whose first eight veeks of acti ity were confineil to the limits of a boxcar more than eightv-fi e years ago — what will the future hold? W . « ' x- s P .  . Im 0(:yj: VLcssacjc to the i raduatei During your time in college, both iaciilt and students ha ' e assmned new and numerous functions of leadership. This is at it should be. and I enjoy niv role of interested and amazed spectator as the school progresses before me. And progress it does. We gro v in size: already appro ed is an enrollment goal to be attained within a few short vears of fi e times the size of the school in 1 148. . lread in sight is a faculty with h e times the niunber of doctorates held se en vears ago. Already within otu- grasp is a di ersified program of training both elementary and high school teachers. Already achie eil is a forty-eight ' eek school )ear for all who wish to take ad antage of it. .All these things are important only if we keep our le el of accom- plishment high. . nd this we lia e also done. By an reasonable standard of comparison with other teacher training institiuions. Chicago Teachers College is in all phases of its program adecpiate. in most phases excellent, in manv phases superior. I particularlv cherish a letter in my files from Dr. C ' harlcs V. Hinit. sho was for twenty-Hve years secretary- treasurer of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Educa- tion, and who kno ss the extracndinarv icissitudes of this remarkable College in intimate detail. He said. A ' ou ha e united the forces which should make the Chicago Teachers College one of the really great institutions of this country. It ' s our a cn ed purpose to make Dr. Hiuu ' s jMediction come true. We (an have no hope of sticcess without more wonderful sttidents such as ()u ha e l:)een.
