V V W 1 , ,, 1 JQJW ' I -a 29 ., By JUDY RAY There IS a vast storehouse filled with treasures and its key the Hebrew language IS in our keeping It 1S the medium through which Israels message to mankind may be learned No other language living or dead has achieved such wide influence Have we the right to discard that key '7 Moreover have we ceased to be the guardians of these treasures 9 Hebrew IS the language of the great depository of all that is best in the spiritual life of Israel Without it we would be as limbs severed from the tree of the Torah which 1S life to those who cling to it Any Jewish communlty known to have attempted the experiment of dispensing with the sacred tongue underwent a slow and lingering death as shown time and again in the annals of Jewish history Let us not deceive our selves into thinking we may place another language on the same pedestal as Hebrew There 1S no future in Israel for a Judaism that resists the Hebrew language A struggle has been fought 1n the land of Israel for the recognition and supremacy of Hebrew as the national language And although the tide has turned 1n its favor it will be a long time before the victory IS complete The striving IS of long standing It began with the choveve1 Zion during the last quarter of the 19th century Until then the Jews from every country had tried different methods to gain cultural influence in Palestine The Alliance lsraellte Universelle of France made French the language in the school system xt maintained 1n Palestine The Ex elyna de Rothchild Schools in Jerusalem used English the Helfsverein Der Deutschen J uden favored German and the Russian Jews Hlled with hatred for Czarlsm employed Yiddish By the year 1913 Hebrew had made considerable progress Several schools had been set up ln the different Kibbutzlm which taught exclusively in Hebrew But the language could not make much headway unless it was used not only in the schools but in the homes as well Yet the older people knew nothing at all of the language and the vcung little if any Often pious Jews resented the use of the sacred tongue the language of the prayers in worldly affairs of everyday life. It was indeed a long and arduous process. Not only was the language sacred and reserved for prayer and study not only were the masses ignorant of it but it also lacked the modern technical terms of other languages. It is difficult to imagine the exhausted chalutzim coming in after a long hard days work of physical labor yet refusing to relapse into Yiddish or the language to which they were accustomed. It would have been so natural and so restful to do so but they refused. Why then Hebrew rather than Yiddish? The masses of the people spoke Yiddish and found the transition to Hebrew a strain yet they were the most zealous in the struggle to make Hebrew the spoken language. The answer takes us back through the ages for despite our great Yiddish poets and essayists Yiddish is the language of the exile .... Sephat HaGalut. It is the fossil which bears upon it the imprint of countless humiliations and disappointments. Hebrew is also the link between us and a wonderous past a bond between the Kings and Prophets of old and the Jews of modern times. The struggle is now just about over, for Hebrew has been declared the official language of Israel. Yet, we must not be caught off guardg we must continue teaching it to our young in school and speaking it in our homes. It must be and will be the language of our people. So long as we remain the PEOPLE OF THE BOOK we must adhere to the fact that the tongue in which that book was written is Hebrew-The Sacred Tongue, Loshon Hakodesh. .-30- THE REVIVAL OF OUR SACRED TONGUE QQ 5 NUQQU PQ! The Academocrat has gone through varying stages of maturation. simul- taneously with that of the Aeadeiny itself. The prom-ess of its establish- ment as an integral part of school life and activities has been an inter- esting and colorful one. From its embryonic stage and extra-currieular status. it has graclually emerged as an organized. essential element of our program. The desire for journalistic expres- sion in the Chicago Jewish Academy student first made itself felt in 1942. just aftei the school was organized. The Press Club was founded to give fulfillment to this need. and the Academy Beacon was born. Al- though eventually the Press Club was disbanded. the school paper had so endeared itself to the stu- dents that it was not possible ever to discontinue it. In 1944. the re- sponsibility for putting out the paper was assumed by a staff of earnest would-be journalists who worked at this special project during their free periods. The name of the paper was then ehzinged to the Acacia-miat-rat . 'S Sain F? It was felt that an im- provement could be af- fected if the publication of the newspaper were made the work of a club which met during regular. weekly activity periods. The members of the new Journalism Club were students constantly on the lookout for a seoop . This elective course now found itself with the added function of writing. cuttine, and pasting for the Academocrat. The students worked hard. but their efforts were crowned with interested readers. who were constantly clamoring for the next issue. We can assuredly say that the Academocrat came of age when a new course. Journalism. was added to our curriculum. This course con- cerns itself solely with the study of journalistic writing and the pub- lication of the Academocrat.
