gn frovlucfion This is the first yearbook to be publish ed at the Chicago College of Dental Surg- ery during the past fourteen years. lflith many regrets it will probably be the last since the University as a whole will publish their own book which will cover all of the various schools from now on. Therefore. let us all look upon our book as a last- ing memoir to our school. lllithin the ne:-it one hundred or so pages we have tried our best to repro- duce the year. lff57. The people and events that are involved haye been put in their appropriate places. To begin our journey back over the year H157 we have selected what we would like to call Spectacular photographs and are presenting them on the next nine pages. Each picture is sup- posed to depict some phase of the pas! year. You must realize that we had to limit ourselves to the selection of these pictures. livery event could not be cov- ered - if they were. the book would then require twice as many pages and twice as much money. Therefore. within the book. you will find yourself in September at the begin- ning of the school year. You will advance through the year and attend the parties. you will become engaged in all of the school activities. You will be involved in class functions. fraternity functions. and scholastic functions. You will be taking National Boards. practicals. and final ex- ams. You will meet your fellow classmate. your fraternity brother. and your faculty and staff. You will travel from the Christ- mas cafeteria and llanko's in the basement at 1757 to the Post-graduate office and Mr. I3lickenstaff's office on the fifth floor. You will encounter every dental depart- ment the school has to offer. The DEN- TOS will take you to these places. Hut wait what is 'DENTOS ? lVe know it is the yearbook and has been so for a great many years. But what does the name imply? This seems like the best place as any to explain its meaning and derivation. The word DENTOS actual- ly is a combination of two words and has 11 double derivation. The first portion of the word DF.N'l ' is taken from the Lat- in term dente meaning tooth. The lat- ter portion OS is from the Greek lang- uage. Its meaning is pertaining to. As a result. through a slight stretch of the imagination one can arrive at the defini- tion of' DF.NTOS as pertaining to the teeth. Our early fore-fathers derived this name. and therefore. out of due respect for them. we have maintained its right- ful place as the name of our book. lt should also be made known here that many people have worked hard and long to gather all the data necessary to plll forth this publication. They worked hard because they wanted a decent year- book. for this we are appreciative. So now an introduction has been made. Turn the pages and look for those things which you remember most. those people which you find yourself involved with everyday. XVe hope that you enjoy your- self and also we hope that you enjoy the book. This then is the HDENTOS '57.
