Professor lluckley was hor11 on a farm 11ear l.owell, lndiana, Decemher Zo, 1873. After attending the grade schools he entered the l.owell lligh School Zlllll from there he we11t to the Northern lndizina Normal School lnow Yalparaiso Cnirersityl. .Xt twenty years of age he hegan teaching school at l'almer, lndiana, Zlllfl also taught for three years at l Frchard liroye, lndiana. During the summer months he spent the time at the Normal School at Yalparaiso, or doing special work at Crow11 l'oint, ludiana. where Teachers' Institutes were held. ln the summer of 1811.1 while he was studying hotany an1l zoology at Yal- paraiso, he was thrown 111ore or lessiin contact with the class in pharmacy and began to take Zlll interest in the work. ln 13115 he entered the drug store of Mr. George XY. lYaters of Lowell, a yery methodical an1l painstaking man, where the future professor of Materia Medica and Therapeutics receiyed a most excellent training in syste111 and orderliness which has stood him i11 good hand to this day. Xyhile working i11 the drug store he took a course hy mail i11 l'harmacy Zlllll Chemistry hy the late Professor C. N. S. lrlalllierg, of Chicago. ln 131111 he took the l'harmacy Course at Valparaiso, graduating i11 .Xugust of that year. The same fall he e11tered the Chicago College of De11tal Surgery, and as pharmacy graduates were then given cre1lit for o11e year, he was gl'Z1l,lll21lE'll in 1le11tistry in the spring of 13118. During his attendance at the dental school he assisted l'ro- fessor kl. N. Roe in the Chemistry Department, having charge of the lahoratory work in experimental and analytical chemistry. lle co11ti1111e1l in this work up to IQO3, a11d for three years previously he also assisted the late l'rofessor .X. XY. llarlan i11 teaching Materia Me1lica to tl1e -luniors. ln 11103 he was offered and accepted the position of l'rofessor of Materia Medica and Therapeutics in the College of Dentistry. Cniyersity of lllinois, lilling the chair for one year. At that time Doctor llarlan. who had held the chair of Materia Medica and Therapeutics in the C. C. D. S. from its inception. decided to move to New York City, when the position was tendered to Dr. lluckley a111l accepted hy him. Ile has taught in this capacity in the college from that time to the present. ln 18113, shortly after entering i11 practice i11 Chicago, Dr. lluckley married Miss blennie M. Snyder, and they have one son, Clarence Elmore lluckley. who is thirteen years of age. The home residence is 51735 liair llaks .Xre11ue, Uak l'ark. l'rofessor lluckley was l'resident of the .-Xlumni .-Xssociation. C. C. D. S., in 11102: President of the lldontographic Society of Chicago in 1110.11 and is 11ow lolo President of the lllinois State Dental Society. l11 11107-S he edited the Ilczztal Digfcst, and in loco he hrought out the lirst e1litio11 of his hook Modern Dental Materia Medica Pharmacology and 'lillEI'1llJCl'lTlCS,u which has already F1111 into tl1e thir1l edition. lle is a niemher of Delta Sigma Delta liraternity, and a past Grand Master of the Chicago .'Xuxiliary. lle is a Royal Arch Mason and past Master of Hesperia Lodge, Number 411, A. li. a11d A. In thus recounting brieiiv the activities of Professor Buckley, themerest out- line has been given. He has read numerous papers before different dental organi- zations, bringing out new and important discoveries in practical. therapeutics. The formocresol treatment of pulpless teeth. a method which has almost revo- lutionized the management of putrescent cases. is due to his initiative, as well as the more recently introduced desensitizing paste for the control of sensitive cavities. He has compounded manv drugs into preparations for the treatment of various pathological conditions found in the mouth, and has thereby been of immense service to the profession and to humanity. Personally Professoif Buckley has many charming attributes. I-le is genial, companionable and always entertaining. As a public speaker he is Huent, magnetic and interesting. :Xpt in his illustrations, ready in his wit. and convincing in his logic, he never fails to hold his audience in rapt attention. In all those various qualities which go to make a man useful to the world and of service to his fellowman, the subject of our sketch stands out in bold relief.
