OUR ENTRANCE I am the Spirit of the Class of 43 . I had much to tell of my life at Christian High and so I Wrote a book and called it Violet cmd Maize. In the book you find me in the clothes of students: even camouflaged in each senior. I spent four years joking, playing, learning, studying-making my- self fit to do the bit God and humanity requires of me. I am a representative of many. First, I am the culmination of everything our faculty can do for a student in four years-be it good or bad. I am symbolic of youth-Christian youth. Finally, I am the product of every ounce of energy, work and inspiration given by teachers, parents and found- ers of Christian High School. But back to my book. Interwoven on the tapestry of education, are the binding threads of religion. Through the amal- gamation of the two, comes the balanced medium which is so vital to men and women of tomorrow. Such has been the sound-rock foundation of Chris- tian High- education taught in the light of the Scriptures. My book is the personification of this philoso- phy. 'It is laid out in four divisions: religious, mental, social, and physical-all revolving around the pivot of the Bible. In this manner, I achieve the purpose of the Christian School. Designed ex- clusively to fit this great ideal is this, my humble book- I remain, Spirit of the Class of '43'

X ,A . r x IN SINCERE APPRECIATION... CLARENCE BOEBSMA ANGELYN KEEGSTRA KATHRYN SCHURINGA ELEANOR WEZEMAN With the departure of the class of l943, we regret that we must also say farewell to four grand members of our faculty. It isn't easy to convince them of our gratitude toward their work after we've been wearying them with our behaviour, plagueing them with our millions of excuses, tiring and trying them with our grumblings about homework. And yet it is our ambition to have them someday come to the realization that their whole-hearted efforts were not in vain, that their gui- dance, both spiritual and educational, was and ever will be appreciated by the alumni, graduates, and remaining stu- dents of C.C.H.S. We hope that those who will replace these four teachers will perform their duties as Well, but we know that their efforts could never surpass the quality which Miss Schuringa, Miss Wezeman, Mrs. Keegstra, and Mr. Boersma have attained in their years with us. To each of them we extend our heartfelt adieus, hoping that some day we can welcome them back within our portals: to Miss Schuringa who is abandoning her successful teaching career to explore new fields: to Miss Wezeman, who is answering our coun- try's call to arms in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps: to Mrs. Keegstra, who is to devote her life to housekeeping, every girl's ambition: to Mr. Boersema, who, after years of enriching the education of others, embarks upon the advanc- ing of his own already extensive learning. You will all be missed by both faculty and students, who remain and by those who leave. We extend our hopes and prayers for God's blessing in everything you do. Good-bye, and re- member us: we'll be thinking of you.

11... A MESSAGE T0 THE SENIORS This 1943 Annual appears in a year wherein we observe the 25th anniversary of the opening of Christian High. Our school began 25 years ago with an enrollment of l4 students and two teach- ers. That was September, l9l8. The first World Vfar was still raging intensely. We are now in the midst of another agonizing struggle---the Sec- ond World War. In those days the founders of our institution ventured in the face of disadvan- tageous conditions to inaugurate a new program of Christian education in Chicago. May the pres- ent generation likewise be undaunted by our present adverse world conditions to plan and work with the same spirit of heroic adventure that was then shown. Hundreds of our graduates are already serving their country in various branches of military service. Some are within our country but many are stationed in strange and distant places of the earth. Boys now graduating will soon join the vast host of soldiers and sailors. They are not going forth into a comfortable, secure, or predictable world. Their future is uncertain. Our prayer is that the intellectual and spiritual contributions made by Chris- tian High to their lives always may be of lasting profit to them. May God use these graduates of l943, and all of us as a blessing to our nation and to His Kingdom. PRlNClPAL , R
