CHICAGO, ILLINOIS X XIX 934 I 1 FOREWORD Due to the depression, the Wide scope of extra curricular activity at C.C.H.S. has been narrowed down considerably. Nevertheless, there have been abundant manifestations of an exceptionally high quality of school spirit and scholarship. VVe have endeavored in the pages of this book to pay tribute to this spirit of our Alma lN'Iater. If We have succeeded in creating a favorable impression of the school which we love, an impression Worthy of the high ideals for which she stands, if we have inspired Within you a deeper appre- ciation for the Work of Christian education, then our Work has not been in vain. DEDICATION MR. C. VYAN BEEK, A.B. TO MR. CORNELIUS VAN BEEK Vlfho has always been willing and ready to serve, Who has patiently and faithfully guided so many of our students to VVho has loyally backed up every enterprise of the Senior Class, Whom We will remember as a pattern of true and loyal friendship, Do we, the Senior Class of 1934, Gratefully Dedicate this Annual. F U fOI'CI1S C SUCCCSS FACULTY l DR. F. H. WEZEMAN Principal On behalf of our Board of Trustees and Teaching Staff, I extend to you heartiest congratulations on your graduation from the Chicago Christian High School. VVe wish for you the courage of faith whereby you will cling tenaciously to God's truth amid the swift, shifting currents of modern life. But we also cherish the hope that you will daringly face the intellectual and spiritual challenge of today by coming to an ever deepening understanding of the structure of society, its uses and purposes Thus you can do something toward the establishment of God's Kingdom of righteousness, purity and equity. And who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such as this?H I . H. WEZEMAN six ir Sm114l'lug-IZAAR, NQAN Blilili, IIfJIfS'l'RA, ISOVMA, IgIiOl'W'l'1l4, NIoL'w, 'I'uoA1AsMA, IIANNING. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Yea, though I wall-1 through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me: Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oilg my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and l will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. ln memory of one who was taken from our midst shortly before the school year began last September. His co-operative spirit, his loyalty to our school, his gentlemanly good sportsmanship made us realize our loss very keenly. Our grief was assuaged only by the hope that we parted but to meet again. Our school has for some years been a member of the Chicagoland Debate League and usually makes a very good showing in competition with these other schools. This year was no exception. Our school came off with flying colors to the tune of six victories and two defeats, for which they were awarded a cup emblematic of second place honors. A major part of the credit for this achievement is to be attributed to Nlr. Yan Yeek, our coach who has transformed a group of inexperienced students into two winning teams. Klr. Yan Beek's paramount objective was to give everyone an opportunity to debate, rather than to win the championship by repeatedly using the same teams. This year's debate question was, g'Resolved: that the United States Adopt the essential features of the British System of radio control and operation. The affirmative consisted of: Harold Dekker, John Cvroenewold, Catherine Huizenga, Lenore Radius, George De Jong, Anton Bolt, and Catherine Mellema. The negative team was ably upheld by Helen Klunder, Angeline Euwema, Conrad Ottenholjf., Harry Ooms, Richard Tiemersma, and Lois Tanis. Sifliug-K 1-:t,i.1NcsA, DYKs'rRA, XAN Britax, Rzxnitvs. Although this year's lightweight team lacked size, it was an exceptionally speedy team. Those league games which they did lose, were lost by close scores. The squad was under the able direction of Coach Thomasma, as were last year's lightweights. Witnesses ofthe games played by the lightweight 'ltivew were often amazed by the smooth-passing of the team. They believed that framework was the secret of the success of all basketeers. CHEER LEADERS .Nlthough no photograph of our vivacious Cheer- leaders is here printed, they are entitled to our heartiest congratulations. The gay triangle com- posed of glean Riddering, Aletha Vanden Bosch, and Ralph Prime, have done more than their share in supporting our teams and spurring them on to victory. S3 Wlieatoii I7 This year our heavyweight basketball team started the season out with a bang, winning with good scores the first five games they played. Throughout the season the team showed spirits of real ability. However, the only-too-well known enemy of all basketball teams, over conjidznre, crept in among our players and became a little too influential for the welfare of the team. Although the team did not make out quite so well in league competition as did last year7s team, the spectators of all games witnessed some clever team work which was always accompanied by good spirit. Besides winning their first five games of the season, the team made an excellent showing against Parker and won two out of three games played with the Chicago Christian College. Upon taking up the work of representing our school in the athletic Held, this year's heavyweights found themselves under the able coaching of Charles Tho- masma. This was Coach Thomasma's first year with the heavyweights. His experience will undoubtedly manifest itself next year. She had just had three girl friends over f01' dinner and the two young brothers, Jack and Tommy, had amused or, rather to more fitly describe it, abused the guests to the limit. Babs was just sixteen and a very pretty and engaging little Miss she was too. She had been so anxious to have the dinner, altho a very informal one, go off well. Peggy and Ann were old friends but this new girl, Joyce, what must she think of herl How humiliating! Disgracefull The only instance in which fate had been unkind to Babs was in the addition of those two perfectly horrid rascals, the aforesaid brothers. However, just this addition was enough to wreck everything. In fact, long ago liabs had recognized their vices and had dubbed them the wrecking crewll. To begin with, hadn't she tried to train and restrain them for the past week in a vain endeavor to have them act on the day as if they belonged some where in civilization? Therein lay the explanation. The restraint of the past seven days had nierely worked them up to such a pitch that an explosion was bound to come. An hour before the guests had arrived the imps had been sent up stairs to wash and dress. Well, when they did come down, there was Jack who had very noticeably slighted his eyes so that it looked as if he were wearing dark sun glasses, and Tommy who had bestowed the same treatment on his ears so that they gave the appearance of two black fiags sticking out. Then their hair-it was just too terrible! Both had plastered their curly pates down to their heads with an abundance of water which would have been more appropriately used on their eyes, ears and hands. Then on the side of their heads the thing that was evidently meant to he a part'l bore a marked resemblance to the meandering of a brook. Babs thought that even a snake would strain the Hexibility of its lzack trying to follow such a part . Moreover, they had not conze down quietly as Babs had coached them but like a pistol shot Babs and her friends had heard the word, HCOl , and the next instant the two terrors were racing down the open stairway like mad. Half way down Tommy hooked his legs and the next instant he was catapulted into the air and had landed in a disgraceful and sorry heap at the very feet of Joyce! Not a bit hurt or humiliated by his hasty entrance he sprang up and gave immaculate Peggy a regular bear hug , Babs' ready reproof beginning with, Tommy4 was suddenly cut sho1't by a loud war whoop from Jack, which was his own clever way of announc- ing his entry. Babs gave one feeble helpless call, 'tMother . After mother had duly quieted the Indians and marched them to the kitchen Babs noticed bitterly that her friends considered them quite entertaining judging by their laughter. Babs observed their reactions with strange misgivings for those hkidsl' didn't need an appreciative audience for an incentive. They went so disastrously far without any incentive whatsoever. The word dinner sounded like a death knell to Balgs. She managed to catch their eyes before they sat down and signaled to them to behave. They both winked back at her and grinned evilly. Babs instantly knew what their behavior would lze likeftlleir very best or rather the very worst. Oh, why go on . . .llll Jack jammed his fist into the peak of fluffy mashed potatoes the first thing, entirely by mistake of course, next he spilt his salad over the edge of his plate on the table cloth, and finally, after he had eaten hosts of pickles and olives and had gulped his dessert, he crowned his feast fflontinued on page 38.D THI liTY'BEVEN CONTEMPLATIONS ON YOUNGER BROTHERS fContinued from page 37.1 by making that loathsorne noise with his tongue trying to get some meat out of a hollow tooth- Tommy was not outdone by Jack for he went through all kinds of amazing and unnecessary gymnastic exercises in conveying the food from the plate to his mouth. He kicked Joyce under the table when he had really aimed at Peggy. His hands, which every now and then took the place of his eating utensils, were to put it mildly a dark gray up to the wrists where they became a. decided black. In vain did Babs signal, It was like trying to stem the tide of the River Euphrates. As soon as dinner was over Babs secretly handed each brother a stick of gum. This was supposed to be a prearranged bribe for good behavior. Although she knew they hadn't earned it she gave it to them in the hopes that it might guarantee her against fresh outbursts the rest of the evening. No sooner had she given the 'fspoilsn than Jack marched up to Joyce and tri' umphantly said, 'lLook what we got from Babs for fbein' have! This was the last straw. Furious, Babs suggested a walk to the park. As she climbed the steps that night, she reflected that trying to do anything nicely was hopeless when you had to contend with two savages like Jack and Tommy. She sighed deeply and felt very much like a Marathon something or other, who had earned a gold medal for endur.. ance but had failed to receive it.
