g ,:ifEZ1gva:ne,g?L,tn-Qzssgfm exam:-f 5' 1. ,Q Wardroom Dining-In 11 March 1978 ai V. r :gilt , - -qi F' Since the beginning of organized society there has been a military ,establishment and it may be assumed that ever since there has been such an establishment, regardless of how simple or unorganized, there have been occasions when the leaders of that'mili'tary establishmenthave set themselves down to a dinner elaborate in service and formal in style.i lt is a well-known fact that the Roman Legions held great banquets to celebrate their past victories or to parade the prizes of their most recent enterprises . The general pattern for a Dining-ln has been carefully checked with reference to its historical back- ground and has been found in most cases to agree, almost to the letter, with the customs of the officers' messes of the Royal Navy and Regimental lVlesses of the British Army. The custom of Dining-ln was a very old tradition in England, but was not exclusively military. lt is believed that Dining-ln began as a custom in themonasteries, was taken up by the early universities and thence by the military units of the country when the officers' mess was established much later. The practice is now continued in the wardrooms of U .S . Navy ships as a continuation of Royal Navy tradition . And so it was that the ward- room of U ,S ,S , CHICAGO gathered in Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines to continue the tradition, celebrate the many successes of the deployment and bid a hearty farewell to the Orient.
