COMMANDING OFFICER CAPTAIN JOH A. BUCK Captain Buck was graduated and commissioned from the U.S. Naval Academy on 1 June 1951. As a Junior Officer he served in USS STRONG CDD-7585 and com- manded USS COURSER CMSCCOJ-61. He entered the Naval Postgraduate School in 1958 after a tour in the Bureau of Naval Personnel and received a BS Degree in Electrical Engineering. He then served consecutively as Executive Officer in USS BRADFORD CDD-5455 and USS PRATT QDLG- 133 which was placed in commission in 1961. After a tour in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations he placed USS KOELSCH CDE-10495 in commission as Comman- ding Officer and from there he reported to the Staff, Com- mander Seventh Fleet as Surface and War Plans Officer. Captain Buck reported to USS CHICAGO from duty in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations where he was Assistant for Shipbuilding and Conversion and Manager of the shipbuilding and Conversion Appropria- tion in the Office of the Director, Ship Acquisition and Im- provement. . Among Captain Buck's decorations are the Navy Commendation Medal with combat distinguishing device and gold star in lieu of second award, Navy Unit Commen- dation, the Navy Expeditionary Medal and numerous campaign and theatre ribbons. He is married to the former Betty May Coyl of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They have two childreng Midshipman Third Class Jerome A. Buck, and Miss Terry Ann Buck. Captain and Mrs. John A. Buck reside in Coronado, California.
