E ECUTIV OFFICER Commander John E. Roe The CHICAGO's Executive Officer is Commander john E. Roe Jr. a native of Utah and a graduate of the University of Utah and Stanford University. He has served aboard the USS SAINT PAUL CA 73, USS O'BRIEN DD725, USS PHILIP DD 498, USS SAVAGE DER 386 and was Commanding Officer USS ED- SON DD 946 prior to coming aboard CHICAGO. In addition to these sea billets he served with Com- mander Training Command US Pacific Fleet Staff, The Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, and Headquarters US Military Assistance Command Vietnam. Commander Roe is a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College. His awards include the Bronze Star and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. 1-.. He and his wife Diane have two daughters.

dl'l1il'3l James D. W3tkil1S James D. Watkins is a native of Alhambra, California. He attended the University of California at Berkley prior to entering the Naval Academy in 1945. Commissioned Ensign in 1949, he subsequently was promoted to Rear Admiral on july 1, 1972. Following graduation he served on USS FECHTELER DD 870, USS VOLADOR SS 490 and was Engineer officer on the staff of Commander Submarine Division 52. From July 1953 to February 1958 he attended Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. Later Rear Admiral Watkins, joined the USS BARBERO SSG 317 and the USS SNOOK SSN 592. He was next assigned to the Bureau of Ships. He rejoined the SNOOK as Commanding Officer and left her in April 1967 to serve as Executive Officer of the USS LONG BEACH CGN 9. In July 1970 Rear Admiral Watkins reported to the Bureau of Naval Personnel and served there until September 1973, when he became COMMANDER CRUISER DESTROYER GROUP ONE. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star and the Navy Commendation Medal. His wife the former Sheila Jo McKinney and he live in San Mario, California with their six children. ' .
