Commander 1 Robert L. Turnage EXECUTIVE OLD .... Commander Turnage was an Eagle Scout and valedictorian of his high school class in Grenada, Mississippi. He attended Mississippi State one year before entering the U.S. Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1952. He is a graduate of U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Engineering Electronics and the Armed Forces Staff College. He has a Master of Science degree in Financial Management from George Washington University. Sea tours for Commander Turnage have in- cluded duty as: Gunnery Officer in USS' MEREDITHQDD-890jg Gunnery Officer, First Lieute- nant and Assistant Engineer Officer in USS FORT SNELLING QLSD-30yg Main Propulsion Assistant in USS PRINCETON QCVS-37j and LPH-51, Staff Squadron Engineer, Squadron Engineer, Squadron Operations and Project Officer DESDEV 2, Weapons Officer USS LEAHY QDLG-16yg Weapons Officer USS WORDEN QDLG-183, and Executive Officer USS HENRY B. WILSONQ DDG-7j. He was a member of the commissioning crews of FORT SNELLING and WORDEN. He served as Commanding Officer USS DUNCANQDD-874j from December 1969 to October 1970. During this period he was awarded the Bronze Star for the DUNCAN's performance in Southeast Asia. He reported aboard USS CHICAGO for duty as Executive Officer in December 1970. From 1966 to 1969, Commander Turnage was Head of the Plans Division for Surface Missile Systems Project in Washington, D.C. and participated in the Chief of Naval Operation's 1967 Major Fleet Escort Study. A deacon in his church and active in Little League baseball, Commander Turnage is an avid ten- nis player. - He is married to the former Rebecca Johnson of Winona, Mississippi, and they have three children, Edwin, Terry Constance and Jeffrey. OFFICERS NEW Commander Jefferis was born in Glendale, California, on July 9, 1929. He entered the Navy in 1948 after attending San Jose State College. He served in various aviation units and graduated from the Naval Guided Missile School, Point Mugu in 1951. Commander Jefferis was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy upon graduation from OCS in 1953. At the time of his selection to OCS, he was serving in the Guided Missile Training Unit 7914 at Point Mugu and was an Aviation Electronics Technician First Class. After commissioning he served in USS MANCHESTER QCL-83y. His other sea assignments included Operations Officer in USS PRICHETT QDD- 561l, Weapons Officer in USS LOS ANGELES QCA- 135i, Executive Officer of USS WALKER QDD-723Q, Weapons Officer in USS TOPEKA QCLG-Bi and Com- manding Officer of USS GEARING QDD-7102. His most recent tour was Senior Naval Advisor and Com- manding Officer, Second Coastal Zone Advisors, Republic of South Vietnam. Shore tours included assignments at the Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, California and two assignments on the Staff, Commander Training Command, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Commander Jefferis is married to the former Louise l. Kelly of Palo Alto, California. They reside in San Diego with their five children: James, Diana, Nan- cy, Flobert and Jacqueline. Commander A. S.
