He is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy and Lehigh University. Following graduation from the academy in June 1948, he was commissioned an Ensign and reported aboard USS HENRICO QAPA-45y for duty. Subsequent assignments included Navigator in USS MONTROSE QAPA-212y, Executive Officer in USSr55NERGY QMSO-436i and Operations Officer in USS FLOYD B. PARKS fvliiif-78841 ln November 1959, Captain McNamarareported to the Bureau of Naval Personnel where he served initially as a Placement Officer and then as Ad- ministrative Assistant to the Assistant Chief for Personnel Control. Detached in July 1961, he reported to USS JOHN PAUL JONES QDD-9321 for duty as Executive Officer. Captain McNamara returned to the Naval War College in August 1964, for duty on the staff in the War Gaming Department and later as an Aide to the President. if From July 1966 to April 1968 he commanded USS ROBISON QDDG 121 During his tour the ship received the Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious CitationtGalIantry Crossj He next served on the staff Commander Cruiser Destroyer Force U S Pacific Fleet as Training and Readiness Officer and for two months as Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans and Operations In September 1970 he became Executive Assistant and Senior Aide to the Chief of Naval Material from which assignment he reported to the USS CHICAGO Among Captain McNamara s decorations are the Legion of Merit with Combat Distinguishing Device and Gold Star in lieu of second award the Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device the Meritorious Service Medal the Combat Action Ribbon the Meritorious Unit Commendation and numerous campaign and theatre ribbons Captain McNamara is married to the former Claire C Carr of Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania They and their seven children Sharon William Daniel Joseph Thomas Robert and Patrick reside in San Diego California COMMANDING OFFICER T. Commander 1 Robert L. Turnage EXECUTIVE OLD .... Commander Turnage was an Eagle Scout and valedictorian of his high school class in Grenada, Mississippi. He attended Mississippi State one year before entering the U.S. Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1952. He is a graduate of U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Engineering Electronics and the Armed Forces Staff College. He has a Master of Science degree in Financial Management from George Washington University. Sea tours for Commander Turnage have in- cluded duty as: Gunnery Officer in USS' MEREDITHQDD-890jg Gunnery Officer, First Lieute- nant and Assistant Engineer Officer in USS FORT SNELLING QLSD-30yg Main Propulsion Assistant in USS PRINCETON QCVS-37j and LPH-51, Staff Squadron Engineer, Squadron Engineer, Squadron Operations and Project Officer DESDEV 2, Weapons Officer USS LEAHY QDLG-16yg Weapons Officer USS WORDEN QDLG-183, and Executive Officer USS HENRY B. WILSONQ DDG-7j. He was a member of the commissioning crews of FORT SNELLING and WORDEN. He served as Commanding Officer USS DUNCANQDD-874j from December 1969 to October 1970. During this period he was awarded the Bronze Star for the DUNCAN's performance in Southeast Asia. He reported aboard USS CHICAGO for duty as Executive Officer in December 1970. From 1966 to 1969, Commander Turnage was Head of the Plans Division for Surface Missile Systems Project in Washington, D.C. and participated in the Chief of Naval Operation's 1967 Major Fleet Escort Study. A deacon in his church and active in Little League baseball, Commander Turnage is an avid ten- nis player. - He is married to the former Rebecca Johnson of Winona, Mississippi, and they have three children, Edwin, Terry Constance and Jeffrey.
