REAR ADMIRAL DANIEL E BERGIN Entering in the summer of 1947 as a student in intelligence and then the Russian Language, he served as an Instructor at the Naval Intelligence School Washington, D.C. In July 1950 he became Flag Secretary to Commander Task Group 3'.'3-J He. joined the staff of the Commander in Chief U.S. Pacific Fleet in July 1951 and in October 1953 reported as Executive Officer of the USS DIXIE QAD 141. ln May 1955 he assumed command of the USS' KIDD tDD 6611. He served in the Navy Department from January 1957 until March 1959 at which time he became Special Assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations Navy Department. ' I In July 1960 then Commander Bergin assumed command of Landing Ship Squadron SEVEN in Long Beach California and in September 1961 returned to the Navy Department to serve as Administrative'Aide to the Chief of Naval Personnel. He attended the National War College Class of 1964 concurrently ob- taining his M.A. from George Washington University. In July 1964 he reported as Project Officer tAmphibious Warfare Study1 Officer of the Chief of Naval Operations Navy Department. In February 1965 THREE and in September 1966 was assigned as Chief of Staff Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Force U.S. Pacific Fleet until reporting to the Defense Intelligence Agency in July 1968 as Deputy Assistant Director of Intelligence Production. Rear Admiral Bergin assumed command of Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla THREE which is homeported in Long Beach in September of 1971. Admiral Bergin holds the Legion of Merit twith Combat V1 for operations in the Tonkin Gulf with two gold stars in lieu of subsequent awards and a Bronze s , ' ',' he assumed command of Destroyer Squadron I E Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla Three Rear Admiral Bergin was born In New York City on December 10 1919 H,e attended Manhattan College for one year prior to appointment to the U S Naval Academy where he graduated with the wartime class of 1942 He served aboard the USS LEARY tDD 1581 as Engineer Officer during convoy operations in the North Atlantic and subsequently served as Engineer Officer aboard the USS ALLEN M SUMNER CDD 6921 during the Philippine Campaign In 1945 and 1946 he served as Gunnery Officer of the USS HAZELWOOD tDD 5311 and as Executive Of flcer of the USS McCAFFERY QDD 8601whlIe she was operating off the China Coast ln March 1941 he assumed command of the USS SPANGERBERG QDEQR1 2231 Star for operations in the Tonkin Gulf. In addition he wears the usual array of World War Il and subsequent campaign and service ribbons.
