l 7 r ' , Sam Howard Moore was born in Ruby, Texas, on April 11, 1918, son of Mrs. Sam H. fMyrtle Leej and the late Mr. Moore. He received his commission as Ensign in the U. S. Navy in May 1942. After being commissioned, C aptain Moore attend- ed Cornell University for instruction in diesel engi- neering. His first assignment at sea was as the En- gineering Officer of USS YMS-6 in the Atlantic Fleet. During World War II, he served in the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. In 1945, he became Commander Mine Squadron 102, and during 1946, he served as Commanding Of- ficer, USS DENSITY QAM-218j in the Atlantic Fleet. Captain Moore attended the Guided Missile School, Fort Bliss, Texas, in 1947. During 1948-1949, he served on board USS ADIRONDACK QAGC-155, the flagship of C ommander Operational Development Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet. In 1950, he attended the General Line School, Monterey, California. From January 1951 until Octo- ber 1952, Captain Moore served on the staff of Com- manding General SIXTH Army, in the Presidio of San Francisco. From October 1952 until August 1954, he served as Flag Secretary to Commander Mine Force, U. S. Pacific Fleet. Captain Moore became Executive Officer of USS HENRY W. TUCKER QDDR-8755 in September 1954. -In March 1956 he assumed command of the Pacific- based USS CUSHIN.G QDD-797j. From September 1957 until June 1958,he attend- ed the Senior Course, Marine Corps Schools , Quantico, Virginia. From July 1958 until 1960 he was assigned to the Office of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations fResearch and Developmentj . In July 1960, Captain Moore became Executive Officer of the First TALOS Guided Missile Ship, USS GALVESTON QCLG-35, in the Atlantic Fleet. He assumed command of Destroyer Division ONE ZERO TWO on March 1, 1962, and was involved in the Cuban Crisis of October 1962. During that period, he was the on-scene commander for boarding at sea and search of MARUCLA during the Quarantine opera- tions. On April 19, 1963, Captain Moore was detached from duty as Commander Destroyer Division ONE ZERO TWO. He then reported to the Bureau of Naval Weapons where he served as Director of Plans and Programs for the Surface Missile Systems Project until March 1965. ' Captain Moore then attended the Missile Systems Orientation Course at Naval Schools Command,Mare Island, Vallejo, California. He then reported to the Fleet Anti-Air-Warfare TrainingCenter in San Diego, California for the Naval Tactical Data System Opera- tions Indoctrination Course. I ' He reported on board USS CHICAGO QCG-115 in Captain Moore was awarded the Legion of Merit for duty while Director Plans and Programs, Surface Missile Systems Project During World War II, Cap- tain Moore was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal as Commanding Officer, USS YMS-415, and was awarded a second Navy Commendation as Com- mander Mine Squadron 102 During the Cuban Crisis, he was awarded a third Navy Commendation for the MARUCLA incident He possesses the Asiatic Pacific Area Medal ffour starsj for duty in Okinawa Campaign, Third Fleet, East China Sea and Japanese Empire water operations. He also possesses the Navy Occu- pation Medal fAsia Claspj, China Service Medal, American Theater Medal, World War II Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal.
