Pow Wow 1969 Cheyenne Mountain High School Colorado Springs, Colorado Table of Contents Dedication 6 Faculty 12 Seniors 32 Activities 52 Underclassrnen 66 Sports 90 Organizations 1 22 MW Foreward As the 1968-69 school year at Cheyenne Mountain High School comes to a close, the activities and academics of the year have become history. The year held many happy memories and those who leave will do so With a tinge of sadness . The recognition of what Cheyenne has done to transform the bodies and minds of dependent adolescents into mature and independent adults, evokes pride in the individual, pride that gives a dedication of purpose to each one passing through the portals of Cheyenne Mountain High School. A permanent monument of the year, which embodies the essence of student life at Cheyenne, remains for both those who stay and those who graduate. The students, teachers, football games, assemblies, dances, organizations, Kiva, and other traditions are recorded here in the embodiment of the soul of Cheyenne Mountain High School, the 1969 Pow Wow. -1 X aww 4 NY QQ X lm 4 My Q b .f ,,.A I 'Qfz :iA I . -, f f iv, .,,A,, , , f 1 xx! Archie Musick As students at Cheyenne move from building to building and classroom to classroom, their attention is drawn to the many impressive paintings that adorn the walls . These paintings and murals reflect the spirit of Cheyenne and the importance the school attaches to aesthetic values in the educational program. Mr. Archie Musick, a much respected artist and teacher, has been an important contributor to this outstanding art collection. Not only has he painted some of the scenes, such as the children's mural in Canon Elementary School, but also he has been responsible for the restoration and preservation of many of the school district's paintings. It is a great pleasure to dedicate this annual to Mr. Musick in appreciation of his contributions to the Cheyenne tradition. In a familiar pose Mr. Musick is hard at Work symbolizing 26 years of service at Cheyenne . 7 Junior Magazine Sale juniors that sold their quota---5530.00 or more. Prom---the Kiva Banquet--highlights of graduation activities! And who makes these possible? The junior Class with its annual magazine sale. For twenty-five years Cheyenne Mountain juniors have worked tirelesslyveach September to sell several thousand dollars worth of magazines, and for an equal number of years loyal relatives and friends have cheerfully signed on the dotted line for either new or renewal subscriptions. Begun about 1943 under the sponsorship of Miss Hazel Martin, the sale has grown steadily. For the past seven years, working with Mrs. Knutson as sponsor, the juniors have continued their successful campaigns, with the Class of 1970 selling well over 5300 dollars worth of magazines, the second highest total in the history of the school. As a result the seniors of the Class of '69 were honored in May with two outstanding functions, a beautiful junior-Senior Prom held at the Broadmoor ballroom, and the traditional and elegant Kiva Banquet at the new Antlers-Plaza, under the sponsorship of Mr. Yost, assisted by Mrs. Knutson. Our congratulations to the junior Class officers and representatives, and to every member of the class who worked to make the sale a success. The juniors selling over one hundred dollars worth of subscriptions were: Standing: Steve Willis, Mark The top five salesmen were from left to right: lainie Urich, Julie Watson, Steve Luskg Seated: lainie Ellingsworth, Marcia Clement, Steve Willis, Barb Ellingsworth, Denise Dragoo, Barb Carle, Marcia Carle, and Julie Watson. Take Her She's Mine The talent was really apparent to those in the audience watching the CMHS students' rendition of Take Her She's Mine . The story is of the growth and maturation of a young girl. Nancy Hock played the main character, Molly Michealson, who graduates from high school and goes on to college. Molly decides that college is not the place to become sophisticated. She then quits college and travels to Paris, and when she returns, she is supposedly totally sophisticated complete with bleached hair and the ability to smoke. The realization finally dawns on her that there is no place like home. But! Little sister, jan Steele, is growing up too, and is following her older sister's pat- tern. So, the parents, Pam Parker and Brad Baker, are off and running again. The supporting principle characters played by Rich Conway, Gordy Riegel, Dick Wilhelm, and Tom Schaible were also portrayed admirably. 65 This guy's got to be kidding! Say that again and I WlLL hit you with my purse. UNDERCLAE .3993 I a f , E55 X 55 ,x..f1.f, Y J! X 5934 ai: N , N, ,N N J Q w 2 ,. MQ., ,A Q-,W f, fgm iw. , '-H? A 2 tl 0 i , 5 .. Wiiiviigf .X - Jim Richardson and Jim Carson 1968 Co-Captains Cheyenne's football team completed a highly successful season this year. A total 6-2-1 record shows how well the team fared. The highly sought after league title eluded the group due to the game with Widefield, which was a close 10 to 12 contest. Chris jenkins, our highly respected half back, had to lead the team in rtmning during that game because another favorite, jim Richardson, was injured. As a whole the team was high on spirit this year. They were led mainly by the co-captains, jim Richardson and jim Carson, but also backed by strong senior play- ers and many dedicated underclassmen. The secret to the football team success was the outstanding job of the coaching staffg led by the new head coach, Mr. Carl Fetters and consisting of Mr. O'l-Iare, Mr. Mandell and two new coaches, Mr. Cerise and Mr. Anderson. .- Q, 1. The Indians were particularly strong in the freestyle events and in diving. junior, Fred Offutt went to state in the 200 yard and 400 yard freestyle events, placing second in the 400 with a record-breaking time of 4:07. No Cheyenne athlete in any sport has gone higher. Senior co-captains Tom Schaible and Norm Andersson led weight to the successful 400 yard freestyle relays as well as to individual events they participated in. Cheyenne had five divers this season, all of them juniors. Mike Grazier, a trans- fer from George Washington High in Denver, and Ken Sharp went to state. Greg Thompson and Pat Carter should help next season to provide a clean sweep of the diving competition in the district. Coach Hurst was able to send eight swimmers to the state meet after placing sixth in district. It was the highest representation ever from this school. With the improvement shown by this year's sophomores and juniors, Cheyenne can hope for another winning season from the Indian tankers next year. x x i Ken Sharp executes a superb back layout. More Pep Club members attended all of Cheyenne's sports events this year than ever be- fore. Nine bus trips were taken to away football games, basketball games, and cross-country meets. A new project was sponsored in the fall, a poster sale, which was very successful and which helped pay for the bus trips. Other money raising projects were a pop bottle collection, bake sale, and selling tickets to plays for the Drama department. Special projects were undertaken to add a special boost to each athletic team such as decorating the yards of the football players, baking cakes for the hockey team, making stockings for the wrestlers, and having valentines made for the basketball and swim teams. A ski trip to Breckenridge was sponsored by the Pep Club in February. Pep Club also co-sponsored a Winter Carnival Dance in March.
