Because it is a determining factor in all our lives,-the 1957 POW WOW is sincerely dedicated to sportsmanship. De Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympics, stated: The important thing is not to win, but to take part, the important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle, the essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well. To spread these precepts is to build up a stronger and more valiant and above all, more scrupulous and more generous humanity. A good sportsman follows the rules even when it seems others are not, he respects the rights of others, and more important, he realizes that without sportsmanship a win is never a victory. ur everyday lives. in school , at Cl sports c good 56 Q -,---.Lt-Ageki, h 5 x iIf'5,? The staff has concentrated on producing a completely original yearbook, a book which would accurately and interestingly record this year at Cheyenne High, a book that would set an example for future CHS annuals to follow. Each staff member took charge of one phase of the book and was directly responsible for that part. Full co-operation on the part of every staff member has enabled this staff to publish a yearbook which will be of lasting value to the Sophomore and Junior classes, as well as the Seniors. Many new features were introduced this year to create student interest in the paper. The pur- pose of the paper is to record the events of interest at C.H.S. so that students may be aware of what is taking place all over the school, and to offer students a chance to learn the mechanics of news reporting and gain a practical knowledge of newspaper work. BASKETBALL This was a year of building as far as the basketball team was concerned. During the year the Indian hoopsters posted an unimpressive 'IO-11 seasonal record, garnered district tournament laurels and were eliminated in the third day of state tourney competition. Mentor Okie Blanchard spent this year rounding his comparatively young cagers into shape for next year. Eight seniors started the season but only three upperclassmen were around when tournament time arrived. The highlight of the Tribe's season was their 53-42 win over the Laramie five for the District championship. Two Iniuns, Duane Eichorn and Rudy Garcia, were named to the all-district team. As far as the State Tournament is concerned, it was strictly an unsuccessful uphill climb for the Capital City lads. Free throws accounted for Casper's 50-43 first round win. The Indians didn't fall apart though and came back to trounce Lander, 57-41, in the consolation round, but luck was not their teammate and Star Valley took a 52-50 victory which eliminated the defending state champs from the tourney. Three outstanding wins for the Redmen included their 53-40 win over the Colorado state champs, Greeley, a 64-58 win over Scottsbluff, one of Nebraska's leading quintets, and the upset which snapped Brush, Colorado's, 'I9 game winning streak. Similarly the underclassmen de- cide or guide the destiny of our school. Through them will come the life blood of the school for the next years. As the Fates guided men on their way, so the underclassmen guide this place of learn- ing on her path to educating future generations. THEM. WE With the passing of Clyde Owens, the stu- dent body and faculty of C.H.S. lost a fine teacher and a trusted friend. For over forty years, Mr. Owens served as a chemistry pro- fessor at Cheyenne High School. Through the years he contributed a great deal to the extra- curricular activities and research proiects of the students, as well as teaching chemistry. His death meant a great loss to our school. MO RIAM CAST THE SHADOW OVER OUR SCHOOL BOOK. WHAT MORE EXCEPT .... WE WE RESPECTED MISS THEM. Edmund Ed Henderson, a fourteen-year- old sophomore at Cheyenne High, is greatly missed by those who knew him. Ed was a small, happy boy who radiated friendship and cheer to all he met. His death, at such an early age, cut short the many plans and dreams of the future he held. Active in many school af- fairs, Ed was noted for his ambition and friendly disposition.
