SENIORS On, May 29, one of the largest classes to come out of Cheyenne High, will be alumni. Some 285 seniors will be graduated. Good things always seem to come quickly and go the same way, and that is what the seniors will be thinking of the last three years. Some seniors have been busier than others, but at least as a class it has held up its share of the activities around school. We haven't space to name and explain all the sen iors have done for the school on this one page. The rest of the 1948 Pow Wow takes care of that. just skim through the activity and athletic pages to be convinced! JUNIORS This year's junior Class has taken its full share of responsibilities in the life of the school. We went to the sophomore reception, and also the return. After that we were busy getting ready to put on the annual class play, which his year was the hilarious comedy, Life Without Father which kept the audience in stitches for the duration of the show. The class has been well represented in school activities, from sports and ath- letics to public speaking, debate, dramatics, and the Lariat. SOPHOMORES After going through the usual suffering and travail the first week of school which wound up with the Sophomore reception, the class got its feet on the ground and went to work getting ready to put on the Sophomore return. With that job done, and done well, most of the bunch began to feel very much at home in the corridors of Senior High. With the exception of a few who fell by the wayside, most of us found our way into one activity, club, or sport in addition to keeping class work going satisfactorily. Now that the year is nearly over, the opening of a new school year in September is eagerly anticipated. tlllilitvww AJ l ROW I: Phyllis Frank, Gloria Bess, Dorothy Ruckman, Marie Montgomery, Thelma jean Peery, Sadie Romero, Sue Hausbach. FCDOTBALL Seemingly more effective against out of state opponents, the 1947 football team at Cheyenne High went unbeaten in three games with Colorado and Nebraska foes, but dropped three games in state play while managing to scrape up but two victo- ries during the past season. With a nucleus of eight lettermen, Coach Okie Blanchard whipped his charges thru a gruelling week of training at the old national guard camp at Pole Mountain in the latter part of Au- gust. Following completion of camp, a bombshell burst on In- dian hopes when Adsit was involved in an accident and lost for 1, . E , the most of the season. Stunned somewhat by this loss, the Tribe L A. L fell before Rock Springs, 13 to 7 in the season opener, but bounded back to beat Alliance 30 to 6. A week later they reached the peak to beat Ft. Collins 18 to 6 in an upset victory over the heavily favored Lambkins. f? v 2:3 .MQ QM. Plagued by a few bad breaks, and not at full strength, Cheyenne was edged out by the Mustangs, 20-19 in a thriller at Warren Bowl. On Oc- tober 27, much to the satisfaction of a large homecoming crowd, romped to a 31 to 7 decision over the hapless Sheridan Broncs. A week later the Tribe ran roughshod over the Torrington Trailblazers 46-O, and the following week once again demon- strated its prowess over out of state teams by defeating Grand junction, 6-0 on their field. Grand junction went to the semi- finals for the Colorado championship. A freakish blizzard before kickoff time made it necessary to call off the game here with Pueblo Central, Colorado cham- pions, November 7. Unable to shake off the effects of two weeks iclleness, Cheyenne ended its season on a dismal note Nov. 15 at Laramie, falling before the inspired Plainsmen, 12-0. Andy Bunten, Bob Buckles, and Dick Haag however won places on various all-state mythical teams. The performance of the team was so smooth in the final game that there was no doubt about the result. Andy Bunten and Dick Grinder Haag won individual honors by placing on the all-state team. Cheyenne started its season by trouncing Ft. Collins -16-18, repeating the process a week later by a 52-22 score. A night later they humbled the Greeley Wildcrrtts, 5-1-39. A last minute basket by Andy Bunten gave the Tribe a 39-38 margin against Rawlins in the first home floor contest with a state five. Midwest succumbed to the Scat Kids the following week 59-37. The Indians journeyed to Denver january 10 to play the eventual Colorado champions, Manual. Wlmen the fray ended, the Tribe had emerged with a 47-42 victory. Rock Springs was out-classed on the home floor 48-26, january 163 and the following week the squad again went to Denver to swamp Holy Family 63-30 at the city auditorium. Laramie was tougher that week, but was turned back 37-27. Cas- per was no competition, losing to the Tribe 30-56 and 32-59 on the Cheyenne floor. George Kingham Don Yoeman Glen Oslund Verl Nash Bob Buckles Andy Buntcn Unbeaten over an all game winning streak, the Indians departed for their annual western trip with tomahawks whetted for three more scalps. However the Rawlins Out- laws had a well prepared ambush and gave the Tribe a 53-43 licking. The Tribesmen managed to salvage some of their prestige by whipping Green River 49-40 and Rock Springs 54-48. On the succeeding week the Nebraska trip was successful, with Torring- ton and Scottsbluff scalps dangling from their belts with 54-23 and 72-39 scores. February 19 the Capital City crew beat back a determined Wheatland team 36-29, and then headed for Casper and a two game series. Cheyenne made it three in a row in the opener Friday by a 49-38 count, but to the chargin of the experts and joy of .hc Casper fans, lost to the Mustangs in the series final, 35-39. The next week the Scat Kids rang down the curtain on the regular season play with a pair of wins over Tor- rington 70-38 and Laramie 58-30. Without extending themselves, the Tribe defended its district crown at the Wheat- land tourney. In the semi-finals the Indians beat Lusk 50-27 and blasted Wheatland 42-29 to annex their fifth successive district title. BAND Having grown from a fifteen-piece infant, to a growing, thriving 58-piece adult, there is no end to the inspira- tion and pleasure which this group of interested music lovers gives. Whether at football games or at our own auditorium, whether beating out a good old school song or a clas- sic, the band was that something all of us needed to make us feel that we were all on one team. Winning top hon- ors in the Festival, having the Concert Group-Band-Orchestra Concert, marching in the Memorial Day parade, and participating in extra assemblies made us appreciate them all the more. It's good when people can come together with such a bond between them as music. ORCHESTRA Row 1: Ronald Gregory, janet Davis, Roberta White, Marva Lea Wunch, Marilou Skroch, Greta Smith, Leon- ard Halloway, Mae Irene Shores. u Row 2: Armond Garcia, Pat Reed, Eleanore Petersen, jim Newman, Dick jackson, Cloyde Brown, Charlotte Kehl, Alice Hansen, Margery Reed. This year, the orchestra has grown both in size and importance. At the beginning of the year the orchestra played for the Operetta, The Mikado as one of their main projects. In February, the Orchestra participated in a Concert with the Band and Concert Group. Solo groups and ensemblies were organized and took part in assemblies and the Music Festival at Rawlins. 0 x'0 0 0,4 4 Y4LNfi.K Back: Bob Taylor, Keith Poch, John Mann, Charles Warner Third: Louise Samuel, Marilyn Vissenberg, Audrey Holmes, Lucy Nestal, Jeannine Stallings, Audrey Townsend Second: Sally Parsons, Doris Kilgore, Joyce Moore, Pat Philabaum, Audrey Rowley, Mary Pollare Front: Betty Miner, Pat Fuller, Joe McGowan, Mike Christopulos, Donna Hines, Wilma Carlberg, Donna Stark LARIAT STAFF THE POW-WOW STAFF ,- Vw? in Back: Pat Gardner, Barbara Bourne, Betty Hoyt, Carolynn Groves Third: Mary Barry, Marilyn Vissenberg, Lycy Nestal, Mary Pollare, Jeannine Stall- ings, Bill Hamilton Second: Pat Challender, Jeannette Leon, Donna Stark Front: Joe McGowan, Ruth Gardner, Donna Hines, Mike Christopulos THE MADRIGAL GROUP Mary Pollare, Carol Watrous, Lenore Hoffman, Sharon Strimling, june Koerner,, Frank Mulhern, Myron Hatth, Andy Tagliavore, LeRoy Amen, William Thompson, Wanda Bivens, Janice Reed, Bety Hoyt, Evelyn Lohman, Mary jones.
