Swimming Under the capable leadership of Mr. James Murphy, the Tankmen, Cheyenne's swimming team chalked up several new records although they were defeated by their traditional rivals, Casper. This year's schedule included college competition in which the team proved it was possible for a high school team to compete with a much older and more experienced team and still make an excellent showing. The team met at Vlfyoming University in December for a practice meet and was defeated, but Murphy took first place in the .200-yard free style and Read placed first in the 100-yard breast stroke. In February, another practice meet was held at UW in which Haydon placed first in the 200-yard breast stroke. Completing their college schedule, the team defeated the Colorado Aggies B team at Fort Collins 44 to 40. Borgaard, Haydon, and Murphy placed in this meet. On February .Zl and ZZ, there was an overwhelming squad from Casper who tallied a score of 46 to Cheyenne's 28. The second, Cheyenne rallied some and chalked a score of 35 to Casper's 39. Casper also won the next dual meet held in Cheyenne on March 27 and 28 with the scores of 46 to 29 and 44 to 31. 1,H1'f.lC1Il21tlllI.f in the .-X.-XU meet at Fort Collins, Cheyenne tallied 13 points. Murphy took second place in the 2.20- yard free style: Haydon second in the 200-yard breast stroke, and Bill Banks, third in the individual medley and fourth in the 200-yard breast stroke. Competition in this meet consisted of high schools and colleges from Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Girls' Swmming Although the team lost both of the animal meets with Casper this year, they were believed to be one of the best that Cheyenne High School has had since 1944. One new school record was made in the fifty yard breast-stroke by Joan Acord with a time of 44.0 seconds which exceeded the original record of 47.0 seconds made in 1944. exceeded the original record of 47.0 seconds made in 1944.
