Graduates of the Class of 1955: This year of your graduation coincides with the centen- nial anniversary of the Diocese of Portland. The progress of the Church in Maine is in some measure typified by you. From meagre beginnings, the high school which bears the name of New England's first bishop has grown to take its place among the outstanding educational institutions of the State of Maine. You are numerically the largest graduating class in its history. You have received an education which not only equips you for success and prosperity in life, but one which affords you a proper perspective of your ultimate destiny for eternity. These facts bear eloquent testimony to the foresight and courage of the men who braved the lack of material means to pioneer in the field of Catholic education here in Port- land. And just as Cheverus acknowledges its debt to the spirit of faith of these great men, so the Church of today in Maine, the whole diocese of Portland with its pulsing life in many fields, pays tribute to the names of Bacon, Healy, O'Connell, XfValsh, Murray, McCarthy and Feeney. The heritage of your faith should be the dominating in- fluence in your lives. It should dominate especially your choice of further education in college and university. Choose a Catholic college and university, not because it is a duty, -but because it is a priceless advantage and privilege to learn not only what you can do in life, but what you are in life.
