The task was the slow, often painful one of training your mind to think correctly. and of forming your character according to the principles of your Catholic faith. Make no mistake about it,-these are the two, and the only two, trademarks of an educated man. A mind filled with information is not an educated mind until it has learned to sort the true from the false, to weigh values, to think logically, to judge wisely. And unless a man knows and sets for himself standards of right living, a code of true moral and spiritual values, he is only half a real man. The fruit of the education you have received at Cheverus is called Catholic culture. That means a way of life. lnstinctively, if you are true to it, it will influf ence you in all you do. You will always emphasize the next life rather than the present one. You will stress the supernatural rather than the natural. You will be, in a word, an educated Catholic gentleman. The publication ol' the IQ54 Cmntox Gnds us at the three- quarter mark in a long hard race. There is an added inspiration now as the final tape looms closer and closer. It has been three years since that bright September morning at Vaughan Street when the sharp report of the starter's gun sent us, eager-eved Freshmen, sprinting down the cinders. we rounded the first turn the pace began to tell, and this third lap finds us wheeling along the windy sweeps of Ocean .Xvenue with the mature, steady strides of the miler. There have been cheers along the wav . . . for those who have so smoothly passed the baton in Debating, Dramatics and the Sodalitv. A special tribute is Htting for our football stalwarts, Southwestern Maine Conference Champions: Richie Xshlev, Konrad Rlaliska, Stan Sanborn, Tonv Napolitano, W'illiam Charest. .Xrt Napolitano, Don Bibeau, and Aloe Franciose. Hleigler, our scholastic teachers, and Mr. Curran have shown untiring devotion in guiding us in the l'1lI'Sllll of knowledge. Our sophomore year at Cheverus has not been a period of headlinescatching events, nor have we produced any world-stirring per- sonalities: yet we have taken some valuable steps toward our intellectual and social development. lVe have grown in new ideas from our contact with new teachers. Opportunities, new and challenging, opened as the year passed toward fulfillment. For the first time, German was offered under the guidance of Father Butler, who introduced us to the German language, its stories and fables . . . next year there's a promise of Schiller and his Willhelm Tell. To Father Sullivan goes the prize for developing our imagination and literary style. To Mr. Gallagher our thanks for a better knowledge of how to express our thoughts, ideals and aims. Class orators-this year saw them developed into fine speakers. The stumbling attempts of last year show some of the polish that's the result of hard work and generous effort. Richard Talbot grew to prize stature in the Sophomore Oratorical Contest. Our training has not neglected the physical. Intramurals brought forth sur- prising talents on the football field and the basketball court. To the varsity, in football our contribution was Ray Stoddard, varsity center: in basketball Carlo Cimino, forward and alternate center. In this, the Marian Year, we, the Sophomores, have tried to honor Our Lady. An earnest of our devotion has been Mass and Communion on every first Satur- day. Too, as Our Lady visited St. Elizabeth, so we, the Sodalists, carried her mes- sage of hope and love to the orphans of St. Elizabeth's Home at Christmas time. In retrospect, we believe the year was a success. For ourselves the gains have been priceless: for the school, we hope we are in some small way the realization of her highest academic and spiritual aims. 51 Y: ,L- .', 'o :gl QQ' M V mg! After a few critical days we began the slow adjustment to the customs and procedures of high school life. Faced with the challenge of Latin, English, His- tory, Algebra, Mathematics, Science, Public Speaking and Religion, our first faltering steps toward a sound secondary education were carefully guided by Fr. Sullivan, Fr. Cahill, Fr. O'Keefe, Mr. Canning, Mr. Lynch, Mr. O'Shea, Mr. Bresnahan, and Mr. Weigler. Highlighting the extra-scholastic activities were the educational trips organ- ized bv Mr. XVeigler. An encouraging number of our class attended all the social and athletic functions of the school and demonstrated that we had quickly grasped the traditional school spirit of Chevcrus. The year's athletic endeavours brought out many stars worthy of recognition, The potential Lattners and lVeimneisters are to be found among such gridiron valiants as Conley, Curley, Charest, Della Valle, Murphy, Thomas, Lord and Scavoni. The Cheverian basketball future was brightened considerably by such stellar hoopsters as McCarthy, Pesce, De- Millo, Houston, Charest, Dunn and Black. As the pages close upon our Freshman year, it is our sincere hope that we have left nothing to be desired spiritually, scholastically, athletically and socially. May God bless our every effort in our remaining three years at Cheverus. 53 y e fm ,, nk' W- . Each of these men is worthy of a word ol' special thanks and praise for their energetic devotion and service. An abundance of well-deserved praise must he paid to such active members as David St. Pierre, Pasquale Pesce, Patil Cook and William Casey of -lunior year, and to Tony Portas and Edmund Kelly of the Graduating Class. Picture the scene: . . . Fall-1953 . . . September . . . Weather: Clear . . . Coach Curran and his assistants-Co-captains Barron and Noonan -a line of cleated athletes jogging out onto the field for their first practice session. Thus begins, quietly, what turned out to be a memorable season in the annals of the Cheverus High School gridiron tradition. The climax came when this undefeated Irish squad captured the crown . . . the Southwestern Maine Conference Champion- ship! To the men who so quietly took up the cudgels, to the coaches who directed them, to the student body who supported them, to all, a salute: Well done! We are proud of you! Let the history of the past season tell the story behind the laurels so richly deserved. Opening games always bring expectancy, questions, wonderment and hopes. The game with Gardiner was no different in these respects. Yet, it gave Coach Curran a lot of answers. For the first half a see-saw battle teetered around the mid-stripe. The third quarter was no different. llividently, stamina and alertness would tell the tale. 70 Alertness did! An intercepted pass . . . a score . . . a rushed point . . . and Cheverus began a new season . . . one up! Final score: Cheverus 7-Gardiner 0. Against Deering a nineteen-year tradition of hard fought games ran true to form. De- spite the stellar playing of Barron, Ashley, Maliska, Sanborn and Tatarczuk, the game was not a story of . . . all's well that ends well. The teams deadlocked at thirteen all. At Westbrook, the Cheverus steamroller began to roll. Led by Co-Captains Barron and Noonan, guided by the flawless signal calling of Art Napolitano, Malone cracked the line, Ashley skirted the end to roll up an impressivelscore: Cheverus 25-West- brook 7. To the tune of Roll on You Irish, Art Napolitano and his cohorts took Thornton Academy into camp. New and previously unheralded stars in the persons of Brown, Campbell and Bibeau opened up the line for fleet Ashleys, Malones and Francioses. Cheverus came out on the top end of the score: Cheverus I4-Thornton Academy 0. Going into the Portland game with a record of three wins and one tie, the stal- warts from Cheverus had a gleam in the eye that boded ill for the Bulldogs. No one star loomed on the horizon, for the boys from Cheverus got to- gether and passed and ran Portland into the sod to the tune of Cheverus 38-Port- land 20. An undefeated and once tied Cheverus closed off its local season with a hair-raising victory over the Eagles of St. Louis. The closing minutes of the game gave the spec- tators as breathless a three minutes as they will see on a gridiron for many moons to come. The Eagles scored two touchdowns in the closing minutes to almost take the heart and the game away from the Irish. Noonan, Sanborn and Malone were the de- fensive stars that day. Final scoreboard: Cheverus 20-St. Louis 19. To the Seniors, playing their last game wearing their Purple and Gold, goes most of the credit for an impressive victory over Bishop Bradley High School of New Hamp- shire. It was a fitting climax and farewell to a year of stellar passing, heady running, stalwart defense and teamwork all down the line. The Pioneers ran up against heart and brawn that day in a team that wouldn't be stopped. Proof: Cheverus 25-Bishop Bradley 0. XVelcome, Richie! pionship team. Behind the record and the statistics there is another storyg it must be read between the lines. It is a story of hours of bruising practice which took its toll in weightand strength. The hardest- fought games of the year were the scrim- inages on the practice field! It is the story of the heart and the will to win. It is the story of a team, not a few stars, but eleven of them, shoulder to shoulder. It is the story of a tireless coaching staff, led by a man's man . . . Head Coach Bill Curran. The Conference Championship was a fit- ting reward. At the football banquet, high- lighted by guest speaker Adam Walsh, Head Coach of Bowdoin College, the trophy was ipresented. Added honors came to a few: to Bob Noonan went The Terroni Award for being selected as the outstanding player in the Cheverus-Portland game: the award of the Cheverus Council of the Knights of Columbus was given to Frank Brown, as outstanding player of the year , from Chi- cago came the announcement that .lack Barron had won an end position on the first-string All-Catholic All-American Team. Richie Ashley. lack Barron, Bob Noonan and Frank Brown all won starting positions on the All-Southwestern Maine Conference Team. Not everyone can play varsity ball-we leave that to the experts-but every student found that he was welcome to play for his own classroom team. Under the elhcient organization of Mr, -Iohn F. Foley, S. AI., Moderator of Intramural Athletics, there were two sepa- rate leagues this year, one for the Freshmen-Sophomores and the other for the junior-Seniors. As the Yearbook goes to press we have just closed the season with el-A and -1-B tied for first place in the Senior Division and 2-A finishing with a perfect record to lead the Junior Division. On the eve of the Tournament the eight teams who will vie for the crown are all eyeing the Championship. Regard- less ol' whom the winner will be, we, the little men, are grateful for a very en- iovable season of league basketball. While helping us to pass the winter in a pleasant way, it has also given us an opportunity to enjoy some of the excitement and pleasures of competitive basketball. Tut tosses one up. A la Cousy. Standing: Coach Bill Curran, Bill Conley, Carlo Cimino, Norm Landry, Mike Taliento, Bill Terroni, Frank Brown, joe Tatarczuk, jack Barron, Manager Tony Devlin. gadegaf As this '54 edition of THE CLARION goes to press, a warm Portland sun readies the Oaks for baseball, and a hopeful coach, Bill Curran, issues the springtime call for the young Purple diamond aspirants. Encouraged by last year's good record of 7 and 7, the man from Fordham expects just as good, if not a better record from this group of returnees and stopgaps. Departed, of course, from last year's team are the strong-armed Mike Taliento, a three-year moundsman, and Norm Landry, the mop-up man. Ken Ashley, a steady performer behind the bat, and third base- man -Iack McCabe will also be among the missing on this year's roster. On the very encouraging side of the ledger, however, is the asset of a strong returning infield comprised of Dick Cavalero, Richie Ashley, CoCaptain Jack McNaboe, and either joe Tatarczuk or Jack Barron. Add returning outfielders Co-Captain Bill Conley and Frank Brown together with the serviceable Paul LaPierre and the picture takes on a considerable note of brightness. The worries at present and the greatest question marks that may withhold the Telegram Championship from our grasp are the team's hitting ability and its battery strength. The fresh- men and sophomores whom the coach has seen to date may soothe these worries and bring a second Southwestern Maine Championship to Cheverus within a year. 81 Tx 7' .H ..,,.,... 4 Q 1? wif M 3 ' 1 'ii g ii ug l y .A A I J x I Z- Ax 7 ,,,-X A, .1 i 5, s 1 umm fr-'f 33332 5.12-'v 1 M 2 W 1 2 U I .4 MM., -v ' f Ni' , suv!
