These events usually mark merely the successful completion of a scholastic career by one class and its passing on to other fields of study or active life. This year they mark the end of an epoch. Up to now the faculty at Cheverus has consisted of diocesan priests and Catholic laymen. Since they pass from the scene of school activity in june, we, the graduating class of 1942, feel that we express not only our own thoughts and those of the other classes here now, but also the sentiments of all those Alumni who were students at Cheverus during the epoch now ending, when we say that We want our diocesan priests and Catholic laymen to know that we realize the personal sacrifice entailed in their maintaining the school during these years and that we are deeply grateful. The one standard by which a teacher is always measured is the success or failure in life of those he has trained. For graduates of a Catholic school, success in life means not only professional leadership but the leadership in the army of Christ of the ideal Catholic layman. The best tribute to our diocesan priests and laymen that we whom they moulded can give, the most powerful proof of our grati- tude, will be our leading the life and giving the leadership that is justly expected from a graduate of a Catholic School. Altliough activities of the organization are many, one will find that the primary purpose of promoters is to enroll new members. Secondly, there is the distribution of leaflets containing a special prayer and the particular intention of the month. liinally, promoters submit a report of any new members enrolled and any special intention the memlmers desire. The purpose of the League is to give devotion to the Sacred Heart a delinite expression, and hy the daily recitation of the morning offering, make sure that we do not lose the meritorious value of the prayers, works, and sutterings of the school day. Now as the year passes we the seniors of the league want our successors to know that cooperation and enthusiasm are the most necessary requisites for the Leagues function. It is through the undying efforts of Father Davis that this League has become foremost in the list of our extracurricular activities. As usual the Sophomore class was immediately divided into three divisions: the A division for classical students, and the B and C divisions for com- mercial students. The election of class officers was begun with unusual rapidity and zeal this year and when the results of the election were made known, it was found that the B and C Divisions had carried away the election, all the class officers being from these Divisions. The officers were: Richard Kemp, President: Louis Pomer- leau, Vice-President, Theodore White, Treasurer, and Joseph Concannon, Secretary. Early in the fall a number of Sophomores went out for the football team. Among them were james Conley, james Flaherty, joseph Green, Piere Harnois, William Mahoney, Louis Pomerleau, Jack Reagan, William C'Connell, and John Sullivan. Two, Louis Pomerleau and John Sullivan, found permanent berths on the team. Two ambitious Sophomores, Edwin Gallant and Thomas Conley, seeking to add to their eloquence and the glory of Cheverus High, joined Father Flannagan's Debating Club, setting an example for the rest of the Sophomore Class. After the lirst half of the year had passed and the annual tilt with the mid- year exams was completed the lirst honor roll was graced with the names of five Sophomores, Thomas Conley, Raymond Durand, Arthur McDermott, Donald McNaughton, and john Sullivan, and the Second Honor Roll with the names of three more, Edwin Gallant, Thomas Joyce, and Thomas Roche, all of the A Division. When the basketball season rolled around eleven Sophomores volunteered their services to the team. Their names are: James Connolly, James Dawson, James Flaherty, Donald Gallagher, joseph Green, Piere Harnois, W illiam Mahoney, Donald McNauton, William O'Connell, Louis Pomerleau, and John Sullivan. Out of this number James Dawson was chosen for the first fifteen and John Sullivan was chosen for the varsity. Now that the first half of our education at Cheverus has been completed, we will leave for another vacation and come back next September to join the ranks of the upperclassmen. Naturally, it took a few days for us to settle down to the rigid life of a freshman, but after these first few days had ended, during which we learned the rules and regulations of the school, we began to work in earnest. In the middle of the first quarter, class officers were elected. Robert Hasson was named President, Paul Graney as Vice-President, Michael Greely, Secretary 5 and Louis Miller, Treasurer. The goal set by all freshmen at the beginning of the year is to make the honor roll. Those who attained this end were Robert Andrews, VVilliam King, Paul Ferris, Thomas Lee, Fred Robinson, Robert Hasson, and Philip Welch. This truly showed that the freshmen were earnestly trying to make something of themselves. In athletics the frosh were well represented. Those who participated in foot- ball were James Lydon and Ronald Wallace. In basketball John Markley, James Lydon, John MacDougall, Larry Foley, Arthur Busby, Robert Fiske, Mikie Greely, John Delaney, Lionel Dupere, James Glynn, Russell Denbow, Louis Miller, Thomas Bannigan, VVilliam King, Robert Ridge, and Francis'Nugent played on the freshman team. Albert Maggs and John Redmond played on the varsity team. These men are good prospects, and will be the future stars of Cheverus, glittering the newspapers with their prodigious form. They obtained their experience in the freshman year so that they might play when they are Sophomores, Juniors, and finally when they are Seniors. The Freshmen were represented on the school paper by John Coppinger and Philip Welch. The newly organized freshman debating club was formed by Robert Coughlin, Patrick Greely, Paul Ferris, Robert Andrews, Norman Guinard, Raymond Boyle, Vincent Glydden, and Philip VV elch. This club was formed so that Cheverus might be well represented in the debating fields as they are today. So ends our freshman year. Some were successful 5 others did not fare so well. Nevertheless, we are all grateful and satisfied for the sage advice and teachings given to us by our admirable Pedagogues. How- Qvig ever, led by the high scoring of McCarthy, they ran over Sanford, but followed this by a loss to a veteran Rumford club. In true championship style, Cheverus I5 then was victorious over Lewiston High, Morse and Sanford High, and then fol- f lowed up by giving Portland its first defeat of the season by coming from behind w A to top the Blue. Continuing then, Cheverus swamped the Biddeford hoopsters and V43 avenged the defeat suffered by the first game with Waterville by downing that team in a walk-over. In the QV? semi-finals Portland was the opponent. Both teams fought with equal spirit and ended the half, 12-123 but with the second half, Cheverus was overcome and Port- rx land went on to later take the title. This did not end the basketball for the season, for the school was chosen to Elf? play in the New England Catholic Basketball Tournament. Matched with St. Mary's of Waltham, Cheverus entered the game as the underdog. The final score was in favor of Rumford, 7 to 0. Cheverus took on Biddeford at the Stadium the fol- lowing week. The Fighting Irish just couldn't seem to click, and eventually lost out to the Orange and Black Tigers, 14-0. Cheverus captured an early lead in the Sanford game at the Stadium the succeeding week. However, they were obliged to give way to the onslaught of the Sanfordites, and succumbed to the score of 27-7. Cheverus's weak but scrappy team came into combat with the Thornton powerhouse at Saco in the next game. Cheverus threatened to be the only 'team to cross the Maroon and Gold's goal twice during the fray. However, the strong Thornton line held back. the thrusts and eventually went out in front on crushing power plays to win out, 27-0. The Bulldogs of Portland and the Fighting Irish met in a natural the following game. The Irish began strong but weakened towards the end of the game to the ground attack of the Bulldogs, and came out of the game on the short end of a 13-0 score. In the final game of the season, the Irish traveled to Water- ville to tackle the Powerful Purple Panthers. Waterville tallied all of its points in the first half, and both teams fought on equal terms in the second half but the Irish failed to score. The final tally read Waterville 12, Cheverus O. Looking back over the season, Cheverus did not win any games. Nevertheless, the season was a success in the sense that it filled the first purpose of athletics, namely, to build strong, healthy men. Buddy Sullivan, Billy Berry, William Foley, joe Curran, Francis McFarland, john McDonough, Robert Flaherty, Chuck Luttrell, john Butkis, Obie O'Brien and Mike Brennan all turned in sparkling performances. Looking towards the future the prospects look good for the 1942 season, with such stellar performers returning as Buddy Sullivan, Mac McDonough, Joe Green, Robert Flaherty, Richard Barney, Edward Jordan, and Capt.-elect Michael Brennan.
