Dedication as gg Q I d d' ' ' l k 'l ' am n e icating a year woo . at ass endeavors to erect a verbal monument to the amiable qualities of a teacher who has endeared gi himself to the members of the class and who. by his interest in a class E95 and help to it, has won himself a place in the memory of each of its members. E iz VVhen we first entered Cheverus, we learned that Latin was a Q compulsory subject. lt was with dread in our hearts that we walked E03 into our first Latin Class. After a few minutes, however, the genial N 23 witticisms of Father Corcoran. the teacher of this Subject. put us gQ5 entirely at ease and his skillful jests removed all fear from our hearts. EV Having been thus reassured we calmly undertook this study and soon 3 mastered the language of the ancient Romans. To Father Corcoran E05 we owe homage for his sympathy to us as fearsome freshmen. ggi Besides his duties as teacher of Freshman and Sophomore Latin, Ev Father Corcoran has taken other responsibilities upon himself as Q leader of extra-curricular activities. As faculty advisor of the Riding E95 Club he has shown his interest in the welfare of the members of our gg Q class. His interest in this society has long been the important factor KQQ which has maintained it. ln his position of coach of the Dramatic v Society he has further displayed his keen interest in our class. VVith- out his leadership and advice the existence of this society would E155 cease. VVith his leadership. the dramatic talents of many are bound together in the annual production of the Senior Class Play. gvm In dedicating this yearbook to Reverend Father George NV. Cor- Q coran, we, the class of 1941, endeavor to show our appreciation to him E95 for his interest in us, the interest he has shown as faculty leader of Q QQ the Riding Club and Dramatic Society, and to offer to him our thanks E05 for his understanding sympathy. George is the product of the South Portland side of the bridge and can be acclaimed as one of its best. An English student who ranked in the A class, George also found time to cash in with prize winning essays. The Whitmorites opened against a super-grad team and went down in defeat as was expected. However, when they met Sanford at the Expo on the following week, a team of their own bracket, the Irish, paced by high-scoring Phil McAvoy, swept over the Plushtowners in neat fashion. Westbrook, Biddeford, Rumford, followed in succession, and the Free Streeters now had four wins clialked up. Lewiston, however, in their own court coasted over the Irish in a dogged contest. Morse followed and drew more blood. It now was apparent that Cheverus was in a slump, but a decisive victory over Port- land changed the minds of even the Sports Reporters, for this was an impor- tant game. Urged on by this win, the boys downed Biddeford, then Deering and VVaterville in order. Morse, who had previously taken the measure of the Irish, now were toppled by them in a sizzler. Except for the Waterville and Bowdoin Frosh games the rest of the slate was unblemished and the Purple and Gold entered the Southwestern Maine Tournament as one of the top aggregations. But with the loss of Eddie Manning after the last Morse game and with Phil McAvoy hospitalized for the week previous to the playoff, it was evident that the team was badly crippled. Nevertheless, they VVC11t into the preliminary game as a slight favorite. However, Stevens High of Rumford proved to be the tourney's dark horse and after a thrilling see-saw battle flipped in a set-up shot to top the Irish, 19-18. Graduation will hit Cheverus harder than it has in three years, by taking Eddie Manning. John Foley, Phil McAvoy, Dave Thornton, Pat Duffy, Eddie Ridge, and john Nixon. Returning next fall will be four veterans, Billy Berry, Buddy Sullivan, Fred McCarty, and Turk Murphy. johnny Butkis, Frankie Walsh, Frannie McFarland, Jimmy Ham, Pete McDonald. all showed excellent promise this year on the second team and should be donning varsity uniforms in the near future. Glorious in defeat, and heads held high 555 fs in the knowledge of a noble attempt. the boys from the Institute proved once g -2 V again why they are called the Fighting Irish. Thrown against a vaunted Ev? Portland juggernaut, a mere handful of Irish gladiators, for a full three EA periods, instilled fear into the hearts of the potent Bulldogsg and although A they were forced to bow to a brace of last period touchdowns, they did so Q with a remarkable display of gridiron grit. Out-played, but far from out- fought, the enti e Cheverus team turned in a splendid performance. The if V running of Phil iIcAvoy and Bullet Foley was a constant threat to the Blueg Vg and the entire forward wall did yeoman work, constantly harrassing Port- EA3 land's backs. 15 R If The Free Street Irish wound up their season the following week with a fs 13 to 7 victory over a hard-lighting Waterville High eleven.
