OUR FIFTIETH YEAR This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Chetek High School appears that there is some dlfference of opinion about who the first graduates were Be that as it may, it is interesting to pause and consider the changes and the progress which has been made since the first graduates left the High School The course of study offered fifty years ago was designed to fill in an entirely different situation than that in which we find ourselves The first graduates of Chetek High School were a very highly selected Chetek a need today group Very few girls and still fewer boys attended high school and those who did at tend planned to use their high school education as a preparation for some pro fession or other speclfic line of work To become educated they must acquire a large number of facts, and it was thought that they must all study algebra, geometry, Latin and grammar to discipline their minds and their lives A large percentage of the graduates at that time came from the village of Chetek Very few from the surrounding country went to high school because there was a great deal of work to do at home The picture has gradually but surely changed Over 905 of the elementary school graduates, not only from the city of Chetek but from the rural schools around Chetek, are now attending high school For a group of this nature, the course of study should bexand is differ t Since a very small percentage of the graduates go on to school, the main purpose of h high school education is no longer a preparation for college but rather a preparation to face the prob subjects are not required for each student now because their disciplinary val ue is now seriously questioned by modern psychology The so called academic or college preparatory course 5fNstudy is yielding to vocational subjects such as agriculture, typewrlting, home economics and manual arts The modern world in to which graduates are entering today does not measure their worth so much by the number of facts which they know as by the things which they can do Many of these things such as abllity to cooperate and get along with people, depen dability, respect for honest work, good sportsmanship, character, and honesty are developed perhaps as much by some of the activities such as athletics, mu sic, forensics and drama as by the regular class room work This large increase in enrollment has made it necessary to have a larger faculty, a larger school building, and more equipment A faculty of a dozen teachers, each well trained specialists in his subject, makes it possible to offer a variety of subjects which were not dreamed of when Chetek High School was established fifty years ago Yes, it is interesting to consider the changes which have taken place in the first fifty years of Chetek High School What do the next fifty years hold in the way of and girls who tte school in the community possibilities? That will depend to a large extent upon the boys have finished school in the past and those who will go through the future They will take the positions of responslbility in and determlne the progress of the future Page Three . It lems which they meet in theirxeveryday life. The sokoalled mental discipline
