This group was organized and brought to fruition under the leadership of Mr. Arthur Pepe, the present director of the Orchestra. In Mid-September of 1950, Mr. Pepe announced his desire to form an orchestra to the Student Body and especially encouraged students with some musical background to be- gin the study of some one of the String instruments, even though they already played an instrument in the High School Band. From this first call came a response of twelve students, most of whom were Band members. Instruments included ten violins, one viola and one cello. First classes of instruction began in October of 1950. By February, 1951 the Orchestra proudly took its place With the other assemblies of the Music Department in presenting the first Annual Spring Music Festival. In the Fall of 1953, the Orchestra presented an Assembly for the Iunior High Students at New Paris. The Orchestra's next appearance was at the Spring Concert in April of 1954. Several students were selected for the Central Western District Orchestra Festival held in Apollo. 1954 Orchestra graduates include several of the original members of the group. Forty Five
