PAY ADAMS ....,. Class Reporter Secretary Vice President Treasurer President MOTTO-Knowledge Gained is the Stairway to Success CLASS FLOWER-American Beauty Rose COLORS-Blue and Silver Sixteen SCHOOL DAZE You may have heard about me, although I doubt it. I am the cat that first saw this class come to Schellsburg-Napier High School in l95U. Now don't get me wrong. I like them, sometimes, but 73 descending on these sacred portals with the patter of little f?l feet was just too much for me. I left. A month or so later I took the mouse by the tail, figuratively speaking, and cautiously peered in a window. But there wasn't much to fear because they were busily engaged in a class meeting. When all the voting was over, the results ap- peared on the blackboard like this: class motto, Knowledge gained is the stairway to success, class colors, blue and silver, class flower, American Beauty Rose. They also elected class officers. A short time later I discovered them selling magazines, and after that, I didn't see much of them. Next year, due to East St. Clair, West St. Clair and Harrison Township changing schools, only 48 of my friends returned. Although a little scatter- brained, they managed to sponsor a square dance, a skating party and a door-to-door bake sale. I chaperoned them very closely at this event. Those crumbs were delicious. Well, the juniors returned to Chestnut Ridge High School and as a re- sult of the new jointure, I0 more class members are lost. This year was really hard on my nerves, the ball started rolling with a square dance in October. Most cats would have given up, but I stuck with them through the rehearsals and finally the performance of Grandad Steps Outf' on November I9 in the Schellsburg Co-op Theater. Castly speaking, I really howled at some of those scenes. I wasn't there, but rumors are, that the floor was dusted at the skating party, December 9. What confusion! Their wails and lamentations could be heard for miles around, finally I learned that their class rings came late, not arriving until around the Christmas vacation. I hopped a ride and looked in on their Iunior- Senior Banquet at the Penn-Bedford Hotel on April 14. A wiener roast was held May 29 as a windup of their jolly days. Seniors, at last, and only 33 classmates left! In order to avoid the spring rush, the Washington trip was taken in the fall. I wanted to go along but didn't quite make it. Anyway, they all enjoyed it tremendously and had lovely weather during their stay. Victory in the magazine campaign and a pint of ice cream for each person, but me, I missed out on it. The Yearbook fund was replenished by a skating party. At Christmas time the Seniors sold cards, stationery, etc. As the Lion goes to press, they are preparing a play to be given in March. Name cards and announcements are to be ordered. I know their real interest lies in Baccalaureate May 23 and Commencement May 26. One sunny morning, Iuly l, 1974, we set sail on an expedition to the African jungles. The guide, a tall and dark man, was our old friend NED CLARK, ably assisted by HARRY DIEHL. Our captain, the guy that gave us all our orders, was none other than WILLIAM BENNA. No stops were made until we reached the island. As we were unload- ing our boat load of supplies, we were greeted kindly by a friendly looking man whom the natives called KING BENSON SHAFFER. What a shock that was! After we told him what we came for, he changed the look on his face. He made a strange movement with his hands and called for DUSTY IOE MILLER. who ordered us away. We heard so much about a witch doctor, that I intended to see him. We were greeted by DON MAC GREGOR. We could recognize our friend because of the strange and silly looking head piece he wore. He was assisted by none other than CAROL COLVIN. As I gazed around, I saw heads of white men hanging in the sun to dry. Next to them I saw a very nice looking old woman weaving a rug. To my surprise it was still MISS HELEN MILLER. I also wanted to see the real Tarzan, but who do you think we saw? WILLIAM GEORGE, himself. We heard music in the distance, and as we approached, we saw four beautiful dancing girls before the fire. What do you suppose FAY ADAMS, LILA HILLEGASS, ANITA DIEHL, AND MAXINE ELLENBERGER were doing? Entertaining men, of course. The music was terrific and so were the players. Whatever possessed PHILIP IMGRUND and HARRY LATSHAW to beat out that silly rythm. I was informed that this was a wedding celebration of IOANN CARSON. BLANCHE WERNER was her flower girl. Twenty Five CLASS PROPHECY I watched the celebration and then decided to take a walk in the forest. What strange noises I heard. I sat down on a log close by and saw something shiny close by my feet. Picking it up, I saw it was a large diamond. I grabbed it and plunged it into my pocket. As I walked further on I was led into a trap. When I turned around. I met face to face, three little figures of native girls. Who were they? SHELAH ROSE BENCE, CAROL EARNEST, AND DOROTHY HORNER. I hardly knew them with that fancy hairdo. A bone through the top! I cou1dn't see how they changed so much. They grabbed me and made me start walking to meet the so-called mother of the tribe. How could I ever believe it was my dearest friend, DONNA LEE WEAVER. She gave me an order, to a very at- tractive lady to tie me to the stake. IULIA! IULIA HERLINE I cried, Don't do it, please! After many hours of struggling I finally broke loose. Running like wild, I was again caught by some more of these strange looking characters. Why would DONALD HORNER, ROSS WILLIAMS, AND CARL MAY want to make stew of me? Into the cooking pot with this girl, I heard them cry. The water was being well heated by their cooks, IANET EMRICK, BETTY LOU FRA- ZIER AND IANICE MANGES. Sitting at a distance, close to a stone, I could see some one looking at those strange instruments they were about to use on me. Why would NANCY SLACK want to do a thing like that. As I saw the fire still blazing, my face wet with prespiration, I noticed the strange figures of PATRICIA MANGES, AND LEE WENTZ still bringing in more branches to make the fire grow. In a second I, VIRGINIA LABUDA would be thrust into the boiling water. Iust then a daring young man came forth. Was I glad to see VINCENT HICKEY. I was safe again and I will return home. Was this only a strange dream, or will we wake up some day and find ourselves in this strange African Iungle. Twenty Six Seniors Weekend in Washington, D. C On Friday, September 25, at 6 A.M. sharp, thirty-three seniors, Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Taylor, and Mr. Weimert left Chestnut Ridge High School for a trip to the United States Capital. We arrived in Washington at 10:15 A.M. First we made a tour of the White House, and following that we were guided through the Printing and Engraving building, with no samples handed out, thank you! Next we checked in at the Cairo Hotel. The girls were placed on the seventh floor while the boys were lucky and got the first floor. After this we had lunch at the Art Gallery cafeteria and made an inspection of some of the objects of art. The next building we visited was the F. B. I. This, I believe was the most interesting tour of the day. In the F. B. I. tour there was a trained sharpshooter who showed us his skill as a marksman. After he was through shooting we were each given an empty cartridge as a souvenir. The Thomas Iefferson Memorial was the next building we visited. After leaving the memorial we were taken to the Airport where several of us had our picture taken. Later we returned to the hotel. From the hotel we were taken to Schools Cafeteria where we got delicious food. After eating, we had our choice of seeing the Washington Senators and the Philadelphia Athletics play ball or going skating. The majority chose the ball game, while a few went skating. At the game all of us cheered when Ross Williams scrambled for a foul ball and came up with it and the biggest grin in seven counties. spread all over his face. At 11:30 o'clock we were all back at the hotel. Saturday morning after a very peaceful f?l night's sleep fno laughing pleasel we were all up and ready to leave for breakfast at 8 o'clock. From Twenty Seven there we were taken to the Archives Building to see the impressive sight of the large iron doors opening. The Supreme Court was our next stop. After leaving this building we had a group picture taken at the Capitol. We in- spected the capitol, then the Franciscan Monastery where we were taken through the gardens and also through the catacombs. We took time oft tor lunch and then we went to the Smithsonian Institute, which consists of a num- ber ot buildings. Sunday morning, we were all ready to leave the hotel by 8 o'clock, although some rooms weren't called. We ate breakfast at Harrington Hotel Kitcheteria and lett there to visit the Lee Mansion. From the Lee Mansion we went to Arlington where we saw a ceremony, we saw the changing of the guard tor the tomb of the unknown soldier. Pretty snappy don't you think so girls? Next we visited the Lincoln Memorial and then the Washington Monument. The zoo was next on the list and a tew of the boys almost got lett be- cause we couldn't tell who was who at the monkey cages. From the zoo we went to a church service at the Washington Cathedral. After the service We left for good old Schellsburg. We took a break for something to eat at Greencastle but were soon on our way home as there were a few who were in a big hurry to get home. I wonder why? It was a wonderful trip and on the bus coming home, I happened to overhear these words: I wonder it we could make enough money to go again in the spring. 3 EE .'Q.,1,, f 1 SE N 810 R5 xl'?f'sg JUNIORS f 1 FR ESHM EN QLASSES SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS IUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS SHIRLEY LOHR ,.......,...,......,,.A,.........VV,..A,.... When the Chestnut Ridge Band met for the first time in September of 1953, it numbered 56 members. By the end of the first three Weeks of school, the Band had grown to 70 mem- bers and, remained at that figure throughout the year. The 1953-54 version of the Chestnut Ridge High School Band has been about as active as the average years preceeding it. They played for parades in Six Mile Run, Pleasantville, and Bedford. A scheduled trip to Penn State for the Fordham football game Was cancelled due to bad Weather. ln November of 1953, the Band held forth at the ground-breaking cere- mony for the construction of the new Chestnut Ridge High School. Also during November, two members of the Band, Gail Black and Ioseph Miller, attended the Tri-State Band Festi- val in Bethany, W. Va. Four members of the Band were chosen to represent Chestnut Ridge High School in the Central Western District Band in Kittanning, Pennsylvania on Ianuary 21, Z2 and 23. They were Donna Lee Weaver, Ianet Hinson, Sondra Black and Carol Wendel. The Annual Concert of the Chestnut Ridge Band was given on February l7, in the Co-op Theatre in Schellsburg. The first Orchestra in the Chestnut Ridge School System was founded in 1950 under the name Schellsburg-Napier Ioint High School Orchestra. This group was organized and brought to fruition under the leadership of Mr. Arthur Pepe, the present director of the Orchestra. In Mid-September of 1950, Mr. Pepe announced his desire to form an orchestra to the Student Body and especially encouraged students with some musical background to be- gin the study of some one of the String instruments, even though they already played an instrument in the High School Band. From this first call came a response of twelve students, most of whom were Band members. Instruments included ten violins, one viola and one cello. First classes of instruction began in October of 1950. By February, 1951 the Orchestra proudly took its place With the other assemblies of the Music Department in presenting the first Annual Spring Music Festival. In the Fall of 1953, the Orchestra presented an Assembly for the Iunior High Students at New Paris. The Orchestra's next appearance was at the Spring Concert in April of 1954. Several students were selected for the Central Western District Orchestra Festival held in Apollo. 1954 Orchestra graduates include several of the original members of the group.
