Student Council l2...DRAGON STAFF l2. photographer...ambition-aeronautical engineer In the beginning of our venture through high school which was the seventh grade, we had only two classes, Home Economics and Industrial Arts in the high school building while the rest of our classes, were held in the elementary school. The next year of our high school days we spent half of our school day in the high school and the other half in the elementary school. In the ninth grade we were full pledged high school students and we enjoyed most of the privileges which were held by the upper classmen. Many of us joined the Glee Club and a few joined the other clubs which were offered during Activities Period. Some of us were even club offi- cers. During the year, we helped to raise funds for the Holland school, by selling stationery. The tenth grade was probably the happiest of our school years. We were Hhonest-to-goodnessn Sophomores. Our good deed this year was to help again with the Holland School Fund by selling gold ball-point pens. When our Junior year finally arrived it was just as if we were seniors, because there was no senior class. Our first project was the selling of greeting cards of all kinds. The most important accomplish- ment of our Junior year was the changing of the class rings. Instead of having the same size ring for both the girls and boys, the girls' rings were made smaller. The designs of the rings were brought out more clearly. A Junior Class play, HMumbo Jumbou, was held at Willimn Snith Hall on May 26th, and it seemed to be a success. The Dragon Staff was selected and approved by the Class and its sponsor just before the clos- ing of school. Regardless of the activities of our past years, this year has been our busiest. We have had the job of publishing the yearbook while many seniors were leaders of the publication of the school paper. Committees were chosen by our president to plan our commencement week and another committee to arrange the Senior dance. During the past six years our class has enjoyed being together whether it be for work or for play. Now our school days are over and some of us are destined for college while others will be going out into the working world, but nevertheless the Class of 'Sl will always be to- gether in spirit. The standards for entering this club are a little more difficult than those for entry in the Junior High School Glee Club, because one must be able to read music as well as knowing the fundamentals. Each member must be a regular attendant to each rehears- al. If a person misses three rehearsals without a reasonable excuse, they are automatically excluded from the group. 36 V ' 55? 0 I , Mixed Chorus Organized by and under the leadership of Dr. Donald W. Robinson, the Mixed Chorus is a newly formed organization at the Chestertown High School. It is an outgrowth of the other musical groups, since previous- ly there were both boys' and girls' organizations functioning as separ- ate units. This year provision was made in the curriculum for this group to meet together to further the training received heretofore in the separate clubs. Membership in this organization is open to all boys and girls in the ninth through twelfth grades who can carry a tune. It is important for each member to meet this standard as it is necessary in the rendition of three and four part octavo music. This new organiza- tion proudly boasts a membership of eighty, indicating the high level of interest in things musical. ,o 'T 4 Girls' Chorus Under the leadership of Dr Donald W Robinson, the Girls' Chorus has progressed and expanded from a small group of singers to a well trained, gowned chorus Prerequisites for admission to the Girls' Chorus are the completion of one year in the Glee Club, a thorough knowledge of the basic structure of music, and the ability to follow the conductor with accuracy Although there are many members of the Girls' Chorus, only thirty one appear at a performance Since this provides substitutes in case of an absence, it assures perfect balance in all parts Among the numerous public appearances made by the Girls' Chorus, the concert given at, splendor of their red and white gowns, was the highlight of the season In retrospect the girls cherish the memory of the second annual concert of the music department in which they had a magor part These cultural experiences have added greatly to the aesthetic development of each member of this organization One of their most outstanding numbers rendered at this concert was the extremely difficult My Heart at E-y Sweet Voice from the opera Samson and Delilah by Saint Saens Pray from Hansel and Gretel by Humperdinck and Lift Thine Eyes from the oratorio Eligah by Mendelssohn were two more of the numbers the chorus proudly presented It is indeed a compliment to the progress of the Girls' Chorus to be able to perform music so outstanding as that from operas and oratorios 38 Y William Smith Hall, where the girls appeared for the first time in the . . . - h ...Q .-....-4. Sl i L f . , - Q .2 Basketball The Chestertown High basketball season in one way was a sad one, but in another way it was all a bundle of joy The small amount of vic tories for C H S was compensated for by one big victory, a moral vic tory The players and their coach knew early in the season what defeat was, and they took their defeats in stride as any sportsmanlike champi ons would The fans knew this, therefore, they kept coming back, not to see Chestertown win on paper, but to see their great sportsmanship g into effect on the court It is est1ma+ed that Chestertown drew as many if not more fans to their games than any other high school club in their class on the shore Chestertown High received many praises during the season from fans, opposing players and coaches alike for their high ideals of good sports manship. They deserved every bit of the praise they received, for when a club on paper is one of the worst, and when it can change people's minds in a fair way, then it is a great ball club. By showing their respect and being modest and considerate of others, the C. H. S. quintet of l95O Sl gained many friends outside of the game as well as being welcomed wherever they went by their opponents. 50 'I W , 3 1 ' I . , - 1 .- , 4 - W ,A - fig HS ,E J f f . 1 - f g , is . The letters can be obtained by 'lay- ing the total number of halves as there are games in fieldball and bas- ketball for girls, and soccer and basketball and baseball for boys. Cheerleaders must participate for two years before receiving a letter. The star is awarded after the MCH has been obtained for each succeeding year. The purpose of the HCM Club is to provide for student participation in school sports, establish higher standards of character, leadership, scholarship, and school morale. The club also wished to bring about a higher standard of cooperation among the students. A constitution has been written and approved by the members of the MCU Club. As yet, it hasn't been approved by the principal and other authorities. The HCM Club has completed several projects this year. To help out with the financial situation, the members have sold tape which was red and white with a Dragon emblem and Cnestertovn High School in printg sweat shirts which were gray vith Chestertown High School written on them and a Dragon simulated school morale. The sale of the sweat shirts proved to be a great success.
