PANTHER ’69 CHESTERTOWN CENTRAL SCHOOL CHESTERTOWN NEW YORK Published By Senior Class Dedication The class of '69 is proud to dedicate the 1969 Panther to a man who's guidance and foresight helped us through our three most rewarding years of high school. Working for and with him has proved to be a valuable and rewarding experience for us all. This page is therefore reserved to show our appreciation for one who, in our opinion, is the most talented, resourceful, and all around likeable member of the C.C.S. faculty: Mr. Joseph McDowell. 2 Thank you, Joe. Arthur R. Troisi, Principal To the Class of 1969: Barbara Degrush Secretary Graduation from high school is called com- mencement for very good reason. Rather than an ending, it is a great beginning. You now part company and go your separate ways. It becomes the beginning of a new era for all of you. For some, this means the end of your formal education; for others, your years at Chestertown Central have just been the introduction to more intense study. As you leave these halls and classrooms, I hope you take with you many of the lessons learned here. Always remember that education is a continuing process in a world of change. You must be receptive to learning, adjusting, and to analyzing and solving problems. Regardless of the activity in which you en- gage yourselves, you cannot avoid respon- sibility to society. All of us want freedom, but with it comes ever increasing responsibility. Freedom and responsibility work hand in hand. In closing, I wish each of you good health, success and happiness in the future. Arthur R. Troisi 3 In Memoriam William C. Wood Since Freshman year Dan has proved to be an active Class President and has shown great ability in getting the class's attention so we could get some- thing accomplished. Active in soccer, baseball, band and chorus, Dan has contributed much to our school life. It is also the general opinion that Dan has been quite a favorite with the female members of the Sophomore Class. Donna Rae DeGrush Donna has been active in Library Club, Press Club, and cheerleading. She has also participated in band and chorus and has been a majorette for the past three years. We will always re- v member her photogenic qualities in Washington, D.C. (which Steve will vouch for). Donna particularly enjoys horseback riding, and J-J takes up most of her spare time. 12 Stephen E. White Steve was one of the funniest jokers in our class. In Washington he could always be found hanging out the win- dows observing the girls on the 6th floor, even after he discovered the dis- advantages of long distance looking . Steve participated in soccer and base- ball, and was an excellent ceiling decorator for the prom. Mr. Ross will certainly miss Steve's witty remarks next year. Donald Cooper Don has always been one of the most active boys in gym class. A member of the soccer, basketball, and baseball teams, he can be counted on for quick ball handling and complete teamwork. He was also a member of the window- watchers club of the Annapolis Hotel. Don will always be remembered for his volleyball spiking and his escapades in Washington. 13 Manfred Nicholas In school, Nick participated in soc- cer, basketball, baseball, band and chorus. Among his interests are: hunt- ing, ski-dooing, and skiing, which he is excellent in. He really set the trend in our class with his bell-bottomed pants, and his corduroy sports jacket. Patricia Ann Kemmer Patty was one of the most vivacious personalities in our class. As an active member of cheerleading, majorettes, band, chorus and both Library and Press clubs she has contributed much to our student life. Patty especially enjoys Thursday driving class, green Mustangs and Ed whatshisname. 14 James G. Maxam Jim has the reputation of being the soul-music lover of our class. An enthusiastic Jimi Hendrix fan, he is • often seen on a Saturday night reviing up the Silver Streak for a trip down to Lake George to hear a rendition of Purple Haze . He has also been a member of the soccer, basketball, and baseball teams and has participated in chorus and service club. John Dunn As editor of the yearbook Jack was credited for the creative ideas that we used. Our successful Prom decorations can also be acredited to him. Jack was active in soccer, and baseball and was an efficient scorekeeper for the basket- ball games. Science and Math were his best subjects and he showed great talent in setting up Physics experiments. 15 Lee R. Baker As chief photographer for the yearbook staff Lee was responsible for the many activity pictures found in it. Using organization and great skill he took the necessary pictures and developed them himself. Being a mem- ber of the baseball team and 1st clarinet in band also took up much of his time. Lee could always be counted on for a lift home, when it came to the Senior boys. Stanley P. Koenig Stan has always been ready to lend a hand to any member of our class who needed help. An attentive stu- dent, he is especially fond of Physics and Chemistry classes. Almost a resident of Green Mansions resort, Stan can be found trudging over to Trip Lake to fish. He also has a great talent for goofing up his various lab books. 16 Susan Lynn Barlow Sue will always be remembered for her school spirit and for her active participation as President of the Stu- dent Council, trying to make it a better organized student government. Cheerleader, majorette, band and chorus member, Sue truly is the example of an outgoing student. But aside from everything else, Richard is her main attraction. Sandra Lynne Bisner Sandy has always participated actively in our gym classes. As one of the better basketball and volleyball players, she has proven to be a valu- able asset to any team. We will never forget morning-after-prom at the Cof- fee Shop. Sandy enjoys 4th period study hall, homemaking and making future plans, (especially with Chuck). 17 Robert S. Montgomery Bob is considered to be one of the most outstanding athletes in our class. He has greatly participated in all CHS sports but aside from this, Schroon Lake held a special attraction for him. His interests include golf, swimming, tennis and breaking glassware in Chemistry class. Bob leaves Mr. Mc- Dowell fond memories and a burnt notebook. William D. Annan Bill must be credited for being one of the best ski-doo drivers in school. He would always stop to help somebody on the trails if they were in trouble. In school he showed remarkable talent in tipping back in his chair and sleep- ing during classes. Even though he left at the beginning of the year for Florida he managed to be back in time for the Senior trip. 18 Richard White Dick has always been one of the most popular members of our class. Active in all sports, he is valuable member of the Chestertown Varsity teams. Especially fond of Math class, he proves to be a constant joy to Mr. Wentworth. Dick hopes to study Hotel Management in college and the class is looking forward to visiting Dick's Happy Hideaway . Mary Ann Pauli As secretary of our class for the past six years, Mary has kept our class up to date and organized. Her coffin proved itself to be invaluable and worthy of our Prom cause . If it weren't for her pizzas, our centerpieces would not have been as inspired. Mary enjoys ice skating, snow-mobiling, skiing and swimming. 19 Edward Schumacker Ed was also a member of the Chester- town youth corps and was very fond of playing tricks on Don and his car. He proved himself to be an able ceiling decorator for our Prom. Ed especially enjoyed Business Law class with Mr. Ross and was a continuous source of current events information gained mainly by reading the New York Daily News . David Moffitt Dave could always be found after school helping to clean up and as a member of the youth corps was always working with the custodians in main- tenance work. He was always at his best when explaining poetry to Mrs. Magee. The Senior boys will never for- get Zorro Buckwheat and his tricks in Washington with the shaving cream. 20 Victoria Florence Faggiano As an outstanding treasurer and business manager, Vicki fearlessly faced Mr. Ross with money and bills. As co- editor of the school paper and member of Library Club and chorus, her talents have proved to be an asset to our class. Her money-making abilities have been proven by the reaction of the second- from-the-right telephone at the Manger Annapolis. Benedict John Faggiano Ben could always be found in the Music room eagerly practicing his trumpet which has been an important contribution to our school band. Active in soccer and baseball, he could always be relied upon to give help whenever needed. We will never forget the Saturday night jitters he gave us in Washington, and the pizza he provided. Ben's interests include music, hunting, and his many female associates. 21 Virginia Mary Drake Virginia has always been an active member of the Library Club. She has always been a willing worker and de- votes most of her time to helping with the details of class projects. Her ability to wake up in the morning at strange hours will never be forgotten by her Washington roommates. Virginia most enjoys her various Homemaking classes. Linda Lee Gagnon Linda has always shown herself to be ready to lend a hand wherever needed. An attentive student, Linda’s favorite subjects include Homemaking and business courses. Linda will never forget the Washington antics of her once in a while roommate and the secret knock and password which became universally popular. 22 Yearbook Staff We hope you enjoy having the 69 Panther as much as we enjoyed publishing it. If you have any complaints, keep them to yourself! Jack Dunn—Editor, Layout Editor Lee Baker--Assistant Editor, Photographer Patty Kemmer—Secretary Donna DeGrush--Subscriptions Sue Barlow—Grades Editor Mary Pauli—Activities Editor Vicki Faggiano--Business Manager 23 The King and Queen chosen at our Prom were Manfred and Patty. Lollipops and Roses was presented on Friday, May 17, 1968. Music was played by Ernie LaRouche and his orches- tra. Couples who kindly served as judges were Mr. and Mrs. William Carlozzi, Mr. and Mrs. John Collins, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Holmes. Monica Roberts and Loren Pereau, the crown bearers, led the Grand March to the midnight crown- ing. LOLLIPOPS AND ROSES A little girl is pigtails and party bows and such, A little girl is lollipoj5s and sticky to the touch, Yesterday, a smudge-faced boy with freckles on his nose, Picked a little girl a dandelion and that weed became a rose, That little girl with lowered eyes and a blush of happiness, Erased the taste of lollipops and the look of innocence, That little boy will grow and one day become a man, Then he'll carry in his heart the rose he carried in his hand. 25 26 Jon Nolin Debbie Clements Sharon Hill Randy Roberts Tom Sullivan Nancy Stewart Margaret Woods Greg Boggia Ted Little Debbie Fredericks Bob Swan, President Vicky Palermo, Vice President Sandra Walker, Treasurer Pat Bennett, Secretary 30 Juniors Frances O'Leary Rod Holfolter 31 Industrial Arts Driver Education Darlene Walker Susan DeGrush Mary Wood Claire Morrisey Patty Gibb Dale Smith Edith Blanchard Home Economics 32 Sophomores Brian LaFlure, President Dennis Packer, Vice Resident Joan McGowan, Secretary Bill Aiken, Treasurer 33 Mrs. Aubin French English Freshmen Robert Woods Helen Mastranunzio Sandy Woods Hugh Ruane Steye Maxam Lynn Murphy Susan Dutcher Stephen Barlow Gary Wallace Delberta Hill Mary Aiken Earnest LaFlure 34 Edward Bennett, President Melvin Pauli, Vice President Wayne King, Secretary Donnie Gagnon, Treasurer Mary Lambert Scott Brewer John Palermo Marcia Grant Lorraine Reehl Dale Bisner Chester Frederick Ren£e Wood 35 Sue Murphy Philip Frederick Jan Nicolas Lary Kinnicutt Bonnie Gagnon Gerard Tennyson Judy Luke Max Ruane Ren£e Perry Roger Smith Sheila Walker Ronnie Ellsworth Bryan Frazier Danny Kuse Charlene Frazier Eighth Grade 36 Evelyn H.
