CLASS MOTTO The higher you climb, the better the view. ;Dedication MRS. JOHN BRINKMAN To a person we admire and appreciate as a friend and counselor, one whose high standards and willingness to help have served as an ever present example, we dedicate this book. In the future, no matter how far we may go, none of us will forget you. Although we are saddened at the thought of losing your valued assistance, we are happy to honor you in this small way. With our sincerest appreciation, The Senior Class - 1961 Appreciation MR. AND MRS. JOHN HARTNESS Our yearbook would not be complete without a special word of thanks to Mr.Hart- ness for all the help and guidance he has given us as our homeroom advisor throughout our high school years. Not only as a teacher but as a friend, he has assisted us with our many activities, in particular, our memorable Junior Prom, our Senior Play, and, of course, our Yearbook. The many happy hours spent with Mr. and Mrs. Hartness on our Washington Trip and the warm feeling of welcome and friendship always extended to us at their home will surely bring back a smile, a chuckle, or a tear, in the years to come. ADMINISTRATION To The Seniors, I wish to express my sincere thanks to the Senior Class, the yearbook staff, and the sponsors for the diligent effort which they have performed in making the 1961 The Panther the tremen- dous success which it is. Seniors of this year's class will certainly find that future refer- ences to The Panther will bring back many memories that can only be accumulated in a manuscript of this type. To this year's graduating class goes my earnest wishes for a suc- cessful and gratifying future. 1 hope that each of you will realize the ambitions, dreams, and aspi- rations that you have worked so hard to develop as a student at Chestertown Central. Very sincerely, John H. Brinkman Principal ROY G. GIBB, President Hoard of Education Maurice Frazier, Clerk; Walton Huestis, Lawrence Bogle, Thomas Stewart, Duane Bedell. Our colorful decorations upon which we spent many long hours, certainly suited our theme A Night In Jamaica. This was enhanced by Chris Discenza and his orchestra playing the strains of our theme song, South of The Border , while papaya juice and coconut jumbos were served to our guests by Ja- maicans in their white ruffled shirts, black pants, red cummerbunds and straw hats. Ronnie and Kay reigneef on their thrones between two palm trees as our King and Queen. Lynne Murphy and Melvin Pauli acted as crown bearers. Class Mistory and Will Our class took its first step on the road to learning in the fall of '49 with Doug, Nancy, Chuck, Susie, Ronnie, Bob and many others who are no longer with us. In the latter part of the third grade Louie arrived here from New York City and we've been listening to his dry humor ever since. Bill came in the fourth grade from Bolton and has proved to be a big asset in our field of sports. Our year in the fifth grade was a big one. We received Linda from Horicon, Kay from Elizabethtown, and Gary from Pottersville. This rounded out our present Senior Class. In this fifth year of our schooling, we went with our teacher, Mr. Beswick, and the sixth grade to visit the historic battleground at Saratoga. The following year we took a trip to Howe Caverns with Mrs. Duell and descended underground by elevator to the enormous caves below. The next year we entered seventh grade and at that time our senior year seemed a long way off. After receiving our eighth grade diplomas, the next four years passed quickly. In order to raise money for our treasury, we sold candy at basketball games and carried on other various activities throughout our high school years. Our junior year brought many memorable events. Our rings finally arrived in March and in May we held our Junior Prom. Our theme was Night in Jamaica and Ronnie and Kay were chosen as King and Queen. Mrs. Bedell and Mr. Hartness were of great assistance in the making of our colorful settings. In the latter part of our junior year we held a meeting and elected a yearbook staff. We also chose our class colors, which are purple and white, our class flower which is the orchid, and our class motto which is The Higher You Climb, the Better the View, at this meeting. In November of our senior year. Mrs. Magee directed our Senior Play, Father Be Calm, which proved a great success. In April, we all went with Mr. and Mrs. Hart- ness to Washington, D.C. We are now looking forward to our graduation and college. In departing, we would like to leave something to the students and teachers of C. H. S.: Chuck leaves his guitar playing to Lefty Burt Tennyson. Bob leaves his nickname to Mr. Ross who seems to be very fond of it. Lin leaves her scorekeeping job to Connie. Don't argue with Ref Burleigh too much! Sue leaves the floor-length mirror in the home ec room to Judy and Sally. Bill leaves his flirting with the girls. 6th period, to Burt Tennyson. Ronnie leaves his chemistry experiments to next year's chemistry class. Kay leaves her ability to antagonize Mr. Wentworth to Beth. Just think what you can do to him in chemistry! Lou leaves his hair and corny jokes to Bruce Nolin. Nancy is just leaving. Doug leaves his white '38 to Mr. Wentworth. Two old relics are better than one! Gary leaves his job as class treasurer to his sister.
