Chestertown High School Presents Class of ’57 Dear Diary, Now that the ultimate goal, senior year and graduation, has been reached, we can look back upon the pleasant memories acquired at CHS. We remember the fun we had in the home economics room and shop class. The music room causes us to reminisce about Memorial Day Parades, Music Contests and Spring Concerts. Our homeroom was the scene of many a class meeting and also the birth place of our yearbook. But on our graduation day we will also remember the patience and good will of our teachers and the many, many hours they spent training us for the future. As we look forward to the day when we shall all meet again as a class for the last time and step into the future, our carefree life as a student will end; but our life as an adult and responsible citizen shall break open for us to the tune of Pomp and Circum- stance. Alma Mater Just across from Panther Mountain, With her pine trees green Stands our noble Alma Mater, Plainly to be seen. Blest by love of all her children. Our big adventure came in 4th grade when we, along with the then present 5th and 6th grades, made an all day trip to Albany to visit the museum. In the 5th grade Gus came to us from Whitehall and in the 6th grade we were joined by Dave from Warrensburg. By our 7th year ten students had left us. This same year Denise came to us from Maryland. In 8th grade we gained Richard from Long Island and Janet who arrived here from New Jersey. We found the change to departmental classes, lockers, and passes quite confusing at first, but after 8th grade regents and graduation we really felt that we were on our way. Our big objective in high school was to raise money for our class treasury so we had a few food sales which helped a great deal. In our sophomore year we sold iron-on letters and as juniors we conducted a very successful clock- radio raffle. In April of our junior year we received our eagerly awaited class rings. At last we felt we had received our mark of distinction. The latter part of our junior year was spent making plans and decorations for our Junior Prom. We all learned how to work together and cooperate through evening meetings and last minute preparations. With the help of Mrs. Packer we made artificial flowers for the tables. We also made stars, moons, angels, and castles to carry out our theme which was Heavenly Eve. May 16th was the big night. Stairway to the Stars was our theme song played by Ernie LaRouche and his orchestra. Irving and Denise were our king and queen. Our senior year found us busy rehearsing for the traditional senior play. Our production was a three act comedy entitled Toby Helps Out. The story revolved around Toby, a cutup, who decided to make a comedy out of an old fashioned melodrama called Flower of the Valley. The results were hilarious, the play was a success, and we all had fun doing it. Along with the joys of being a senior was the hard work and co-operation of putting out the yearbook. We now end our years of schooling together with our Washington trip and commencement. LAST WILL and TESTAMENT We, the seniors of '57, being of sound mind and body do hereby bequeath the following: IRVING DE MATTIES leaves his art ability to anyone who wants to work hard on the Panther next year. He also wishes to leave his barber scissors to Charley Armstrong, may he make good use of them. KATHY FLACHBARTH leaves her voice to her sister, Beth, (after all we must keep it in the family) and her position in sextette to anyone who wants to be a TV celebrity. LARRY KINGSLEY leaves his shyness to Donnie Pauli and his chicken-raising ability to Wilbur Tennyson who isn't doing too badly himself. ELEANOR SMITH leaves her math ability to Donnie Goodrich and her flirting ability to Alison Gibb. DAVID GOODRICH leaves his noisiness to Dale Strickland and his ability to make short circuits in shop class to Ike Harpp. DENISE HIDLEY leaves her maracas to Mr. Packer who plans to keep them uhder lock and key, and the Student Council Presidency to next year's lucky (?) candidate. RICHARD HEDLER gives the wit he inherited from Madeline Hutter back to her, he has enough of his own. He also leaves his trombone to anyone who wants to get straight E's in band. JANET BLANKE leaves her daily trips to the Diner to Ada Holmes (don't get coffee nerves) and the privilege of reading the library's classics to Bobby Wallace. GUS GIERSBERG leaves his position as head drummer in band to Sally Sanders and his baseball ability to Billy Carboy. TO MR. PACKER we, the seniors, leave a quiet and undisturbed 1958. TO MISS MURPHY we return room 203, French posters and all. TO MR. BRINKMAN we leave £ empty spaces on the school rosters. TO THE JUNIORS we leave the front row in the Assembly in the hope that they will fill it completely. Witnesses Nancy O'Connell Donald Goodrich Prophecy June, 1967 Dear Diary, Tonight we, the class of '57, find ourselves at Carnegie Hall for our class reunion. Everyone is congratulating MR. PACKER who just played his first trumpet solo before a packed house. Oh yes, he also wrote his own music. Trumpet Fantasia in D Minor. Well, if it isn’t those old pals Kathy and Eleanor talking together in the front row. ELEANOR pursued her math courses as planned and is now head of a staff of scientists perfecting the X-M Rocket. Eleanor, if you remember, was the first woman to pilot a ship to outer space. KATHY is now head school marm of Elementary Grades Consolidated. It seems that she did such a good job teaching one grade that they decided to give her all the elementary grades in the state. It's quite a job teaching a class of 10, 000, but Kathy doesn't mind. Oh, here comes IRVING. Irving has really made a name for himself in the artistic world. I hear he's so successful that he put Norman Rockwell and Grand- ma Moses out of business. Irving expects to leave shortly for France to present one of his paintings to the Louvre. What was that noise? Oh, Larry and Dave just flew in from Europe. LARRY now has a monopoly on all the chickens and eggs in Europe. Larry wanted to stay here but his brother, Wayne, owned all the chickens in Texas so he decided to go elsewhere. DAVE is now residing in Egypt. Yep, you guessed it - he has a harem of 25 beautiful girls. He also has 50 sports cars that he built himself. It seems that the Egyptian government had to rebuild their whole road system just for Dave. I hear laughing someplace. Oh it's just RICHARD telling Denise a joke. Richard holds a unique position; he is sole owner of all the jokes in the United States. Dick has them all filed away according to the subject and degree of funniness. Now, anyone who wants to tell a joke has to get permission from Dick. DENISE, who never thought she'd go in for medicine, has at last developed a cure for the common cold. The only trouble is, it works on everyone but herself. She almost put her husband out of business but he has to keep her supplied. Oh yes, her husband owns the Kleenex Company. Oh there's GUS sleeping in one of the seats. I guess he's all tired out: after all. he walked all the way from Chicago to our reunion tonight. Gus is the world's champion walker having made a world's record of 500 miles without stopping. Gus says he got his experience walking from his home in the Glen to town during his days at old C. H. S. Everyone is here but JANET. Oh, here she comes now with her husband. Janet is married to a wealthy producer quite a few years older than herself, and she keeps busy writing books and plays and occasionally acting in one of her husband’s productions. Well, Dear Diary, that was our reunion. The class of 57 has certainly gone a long way. t I'j3r ' JlL Yjwka Alison Gibb, Wanda Strickland, Ada Holmes, Carol Cunningham, c Georgia Bischoff, Beverly Roberts.
