We have spent nine short months of trying to put into words and pictures the happenings and highlights of a year at Chester- ton High School. Wle of the yearbook staff, will always remember the work that had to be done, the deadlines to meet, grades to maintain, new friendships found and the hope that this will be the best Singing Sands yet. A small group of people, aided by the tireless efforts of Mr. Grotrian, have lived through the pain, pleasure and frustrations. Now the job is done. It has been quite an experience. We hope that through this book we will preserve for you the memories of the past year. And in the future, when you look back on this book it will be with fond memories that the pages unfold. The theme, Whisper of the Orientf, was molded into a wonderland of pagodas and paper lanterns. Shimmering pools and tiny bridges strewn with lotus blossoms paved the way to a fleeting mo- ment of happiness. At the stroke of mid- night the enchanted melodies ceased. A breakfast was served in the transformed multi-purpose room. After the breakfast the exhausted but happy couples mean- dered homeward to dream of Oriental nights under a full yellow moon. 763 PROM: HI PER OF King John Hurnphry 2 the grand march. After many tests, questions, applications, and shots Karen Krone was on her way to Norway. She was selected through the American Field Serv- ice as the foreign exchange student from Chester- ton High School. Many new experiences awaited Karen in her 'iadopted country. Her second family exemplified the typical existence of modern- day Norwegians. Learning to knit, traveling through thc countryside and visiting the major cities gave Karen a broader outlook and under- standing of Scandinavian culture. In ancient times the teacher was the very essence of the school. Students came from all over the world to learn from respected scholars of Athens, Alexandria, or Rome. Today, too, it,s true that the teachers make the school, and in that area CHS really shines. Our teachers are more than just capable-they are dedicated. Sincere concern for the students motivate them to give time and attention above and beyond the call of duty. Respect for our teachers is a vital part of pride in our school. 1252 it -'Sf' fl ff 'yrs r 1-S ex .N 1 5 l A l 3 5 5 S 20. 1...--- . Special Education is that part of our school program devoted to the education of our 'iexceptional pupilsf, The CHS school system provides an excellent program for those students considered to be exceptional There are provisions for students having special health problems. The physically handicapped, for example, are aided by homebound and school-home phone in- struction for Junior and Senior High Age students. Psychological testing is available for the emotionally and socially malajusted. Special classes for the educable and trainable mentally retarded are an important phase of this program. For those with speech, hearing, or visual problems there are corrective methods to improve their condition. Classes are offered in speech correction and lip reading. Tests, with screening and complete evaluations, are frequently given to detect hear- ing and visual difficulties that may aflect the normalcy of everyday life. 4-4 YI GUIDA CE an f . ,-ff q --...-A, I +1 1 r L 4 K I , t , . When I was First asked to serve as judge, however, I had some misgivings. l hadn't had much recent contact with young men and women in high school, and so l wondered whether or not their current ideals of feminine beauty would be ones with which l could be in sympathy. Upon seeing the Five portrait photographs, however. l realize that these young women did not aspire to some strange, artificial ideal, but instead, they seemed to capitalize on the freshness and naturalness that is the special possession of all young people. ln a way youth is its own adornmcnt. Careful grooming, and a friend- ly, genuine personality complement this natural attractiveness. From what l can tell in these photographs, your Queen and her court have blended these qualities to a high degree and in ways particularly appropriate to each. You should be proud of them and be pleased that your senior class can be so well represented. Kennedy 1963 I LOOK FORWARD to a great future for Amer- icafa future in which our country will match its mili- tary strength with our moral restraint, its wealth with our wisdom, its power with our purpose. 'KI look forward to an America which will not be afraid of grace and beauty, which will protect the beauty of our natural environment, which will pre- serve the great old American houses and squares and parks of our national past and which will build hand- some and balanced cities for our future. HI look forward to an America which will reward achievement in the arts as we reward achievement in business or statt-craft. 'LI look forward to an America which will steadily raise the standards of artistic accomplishment and which will steadily enlarge cultural opportunities for all of our citizens. i'And I look forward to an America which com- mands respect throughout the world not only for its strength but for its civilization as well. Y'Vith a year's experience of coping with high school life, the Sophomores willingly offer their Hsuperiorw advice to the Freshman. This brotherly attitude immediately sets the nervous 'Troshw at ease in his new surroundings. The Sophs visible self-confidence expresses his slight advance- ment into an adult world, while it shadows a fear of growing up. This year is full of familiar but enjoyable experiences which help to calm their anticipation of their last two years. Basketball season brings the pep band which adds a welcome note to the Booster section. The dance band provides entertainment for dances and club meetings in the community. Three choral groups present concerts to varied audiences: students, adults, and organi- zations during the year. The six ensembles from these groups add interest to the programs. The art departmenfs work is most evident at Christmas time when lovely decorations adorn the halls. It was the duty of the 1964 Singing Sands stall to record the events of this school year. WVe hope that we have fulfilled this challenging task. VVe, as a staff, remember the confusion of scheduling pictures, the anticipation of receiving them from our darkroom, and the rush to meet deadlines. As fall turned into winter, and Hnally winter into spring, a feeling of true accomplishment could be felt in every staff member. Our book was beginning to fall into place. Pages were no longer pages but became sections in the developing Singing Sands. The school crest, which appears for the First time on the cover of this book, was designed by the 1964 annual stall. The phrase, Lux et Veritasfl Light in Truth, which is found on the banner across the book of knowledge, briefly states what all educators strive to attain. The dedication of the 1964 Singing Sands was given to a deserving man, Mr. William Mullin, the head of the English department at CHS. For these reasons we dedicate this book to a man, to a teacher, and to a leader. A friend of ours was senselessly killed this school year-the President of the United States. The news of November 22, 1963, will remain etched in our minds for many years to come. It was with supreme admiration, not only for a man, but for an assassi- nated President, that we decided to record this saddening event in the Singing Sands. To extend our appreciation to everyone who aided us in producing this book would be impossi- ble. However, special thanks is given to the Chester- ton Tribune for pictures given to the school free of charge, to Alice McClure and to her art instructor, Mr. Harris Haynes, for help with the title and in- troductory pagesg to the businesses of Chesterton and the surrounding area for greatly aiding in fi- nancially backing our yearbook, and to the students, staff, and administration for giving us their full co- operation.
