Eight semesters of home economics are offered to the girls at Chesterton. The courses include more than just cooking and sewing. The freshman and sophomore classes study personal and social rela- tions, planning, preparing, and serving meals, cloth- ing for the high school pupil, planning the food needs of the family, health and home nursing, and care and guidance of children. The iunior and senior classes study home and social relations, housing the family, solving clothing problems, consumer buying, child welfare problems, and careers in home eco- nomics. This year Mrs. Winifred Weidman is in charge of the kitchen. Mrs. Weidman has taught at Chesterton for three years. This is the first year of teaching at C.H.S. for Miss Nancy Wean. Miss Wean supervises the sewing room. Dick Krieps won over Jo Ann Wallace in a class presidential race. Dick Didelot was victorious in the vice presidential race against Karin Miles. MIDST STUDENT ELECTIONS After Dick Didelot's resigna- tion, the council elected Ray Crampton, acting vice president. The members also elected Pat Burnside to serve as secretary. Planned activities for the year included revising the student guide book, writing a book on student etiquette, and combined meetings with student councils from other schools. Ambitious campaign workers combine work and play while they paint pos- ters, make campaign buttons, and trY their hand at writing political speeches. The prizes, awarded by an audience vote, were credited to the class treasuries. Acts are divided into three categories-comedy, solo, and serious. Each class in the high school and iunior high can enter three acts, Emcee's tor this year's show were Nancy Goodlin and Torn Furst. Rudy Van Loon, Karen Kieldsen, and JoAnn Wallace were assistants. The Quarter Notes from the iunior class were tops in the serious division at both performances. Second place at the evening pertorrnance went to the senior act, You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby. The Hi- Fives, freshman act, was second in the afternoon. Between acts Nancy Goodlin and Tom Furst exchanged quips and talked with the audience. The Hi-Fives, Jim Cassidy, Larry Roberts, Terry Oness, Teddy Ahrendt, and Arvid Teagarden, raised the root to win second prize. STU DEN Have Bearslcin, Will Travel, won first place honors for the iunior class in the comedy divi- sion at the evening performance. The Senior Corps de Ballet was awarded first in the afternoon and second in the evening. The Per- fect Little Delinquents from the sophomore class ran off with second prize in the afternoon. Besides several films, talks by an airline stewardess and a model highlighted the programs for the year. The girls contributed food for Thanks- giving baskets and Christmas gitts to Porter County Welfare. Collecting old socks tor the blind was also among their service proiects. The Y-Teens, together with the Hi-Y, sold The World's Finest Chocolate and purchased thirty cardtables which were donated to the school. The first project of the year was spraying the Track with weed killer. This was closely followed by the clearing, leveling, and laying out of the parking area south of the school. A record 55 bags of used clothing were collected for the Save the Children Foundation. For the third year in a row the boys sold the World's Finest chocolate bars. By ioining torces with the Y-Teens, they earned enough to finance cardtables, which they donated to the school. Remembering the saying about All work and no play . . . the boys took time out to play basketball, and take advantage ofthe pool at the Y in Valpo. They placed third at the Hobart ln- vitational and seventh at the Shortridge Invitational. The freshman team came in first in the freshman race at Shortridge. Cindermen came in fourth in the sectionals and placed twelfth in the state finals with Tim Bagby and Denny Hood running seventh and ninth. This year some meets were run on the newly established course south of the school. Best times for the year were run by Tim Bagby and Denny Hood with 9:40 and 9:48, respectively. Jim Medley, with 10:26, and Walt Pliske, with 10:28, won bronze medals. TOP: Denny Hood heads into the chute while Mr. Al Smith writes down his time. Cliques are not predominateg all students of any class in high school are welcomed at any school ac- tivities and all members of a class are welcome to all class functions. The election of the Westchester school board ended a ninety-nine year tradition of the trustee system for local schools. Seeing the need for a school board, the trustee and advisory board voted to set up a school corporation. Trustee John F. Pillman, treasurer of the board, became a board member by virtue of his office. Also appointed were advisory board members Edwin Nicholson, presi- dent, Arthur Pillman, Knot picturedb vice president, Mrs. Paul Copp, secretary, Donald Jensen was appointed the fifth member ot the board. Lyle K. Klitzke was hired as superintendent of West- chester schools.
